Connor talks all the trash, but he takes his losses very well. Some fighters don't bounce back, and he just moves on. Of course trash talk equals marketing equals money. So anybody would be smiling a lot who just got paid as much as he just did.

He's been practicing that consolation speech for weeks. He had his eyes focused on the payday.

At the same time does Floyd have any real power in his punches anymore?

Would a more avg boxer with legit power just floor conner?
Does he get floored in MMA, where there is no padding on the gloves and he can eat a kick to the head?

He won four rounds, soundly.

I was shocked Byrd even let it get to the other side of the ring... Should have been stopped when he literally couldn't lift his arms.

Most fun Mayweather fight in a long, long time, though.

I had Connor with 2 of the first 3 rounds, and an additional round in the first 6.. Had the rest going to Mayweather, some closely. But after Round 6, it was all Mayweather and just got worse and worse round after round. By Round 8, it was obvious where this was going..

I will say this. I've watched most of Mayweather's fights, and I was impressed with his performance tonight. He came at McGregor the majority of the night which I did not expect. This was the opposite of his strategy with PacMan and Berto; completely the opposite.

You could tell he gave the early rounds to McGregor, and man did that strategy pay off.

I still contend this was a money grab though, because McGregor simply was not conditioned, had no idea what he was doing when flustered, and couldn't understand how to use the ring and the ref to protect himself.

Props to McGregor for getting paid and having a good showing though.

No, it's called a hammer fist punch, and typically results in a warning, then a point deduction. Connor got away with it about a dozen or so times... but, I don't think Mayweather even asked for an intervention, nor did his corner.. Quite telling.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ref was instructed to give McGregor a bit more leeway due to him transitioning from a different sport. Seemed like it was just natural for him to go for that hammer fist every time they locked up because he instinctively does it in MMA.

The only drama in this fight boils down to whether or not Mayweather decides to go for the stoppage or just play it safe and win 12 rounds to 0.

He's been pretty risk averse in the past, even against guys who were clearly overmatched.

That said, I could easily see McGregor being completely gassed after about 6 rounds which could lead to Mayweather getting a TKO.

Mhmm

Just wanted to say to a lot of folks saying Mayweather was somehow weak or not hitting hard... Tell that to McGregor. He just got knocked out. The guy is 29 and a powerhouse, and he just got KO'd by a 40 year old man.

There's no if's and's or but's about it. He got his ass beat.

Again, props to Connor, and not just for getting paid, but for learning to fucking box.
A lot of folks do not understand boxing as a sport, and think this is about laying people out in some kind of street fight.. I thought Connor would somehow revert to MMA, and at times you could tell he was doing odd things or even illegal things; but all in all, what great showing from the guy.

Nonetheless, this fight should essentially put an end to the idea that these two sports have anything to do with one another. Boxing is something entirely different.

I guess what I'm saying is neither of these guys no matter how much training are going to be successful in each other's sport.

Conor is 29.

He used all his power early. He threw 30+ punches in the first round alone. Hoping that it end early. He didn't pace himself and emptied the tank.

He's a gem.

Totally... I don't think Mayweather's camp wanted a disqualification or any kind of point deduction at all... Listening to their corner, they were totally unconcerned. It was also telling that after the first 6 rounds, they pretty much told him to put him away, and .. in 3 rounds.. he KO'd him. Very unlike Mayweather.. at least, not over the past 8 years or so.

I'd say at this point Mayweather should probably avoid fighting any young cats. Think a lot of people better conditioned for a 12 round boxing match would be able to walk through his punches now.

Put him in there against some 30 year old professional boxer, who knows how to control himself more, not sure Floyd wants to do that at his age.

This was definitely his last fight...

He has no reason to ever step foot in the ring again... 50-0, ended on a clean knockout. Last few fights have been some huge paydays...

He'll never fight again.

I agree to an extent, but not completely. McGregor and Mayweather, imo, are world class athletes who would succeed with proper training at any # of sports. We have watched Jon Jones use superior athleticism to dominate MMA for a few years; he certainly has become a very skilled fighter, but he certainly isn't a top tier guy in technical skills but he is still dominant and still pound for pound the best. McGregor has excellent power and very quick hands- I think if he did decide to box, he would most certainly be successful. The best in the world? Maybe, maybe not, but most certainly successful. I see your point, and I guess this is my point.
