Cavaliers set to hire Mike Brown as coach

Mike Brown and the Cavaliers have reached a handshake agreement on a new deal, a league source told the Akron Beacon Journal on Tuesday. An official announcement should be made Wednesday.

The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Brown is the Cavs’ most successful coach in team history and his .653 winning percentage ranks sixth all-time (minimum 450 games) among coaches. His hiring marks a fascinating return to the organization that fired him just three years ago in a futile attempt to keep LeBron James in Cleveland.

Brown is 314-167 in parts of seven seasons and his team has reached the playoffs and won in the first round in each of his six full seasons. Brown was fired five games into this season by the Los Angeles Lakers, but returns to a Cavs team that has spent the last three years rebuilding under Byron Scott, who was fired last week after compiling a 64-166 record in three years.

Brown immediately emerged as the leading candidate shortly after General Manager Chris Grant described the Cavs’ next coach as defensive minded and a grinder. Brown’s defensive schemes took the Cavs to the NBA Finals in 2007 and, partnered with James, the organization enjoyed its most successful stretch of basketball.

Brown’s lack of creativity on offense has been an ongoing concern, but his teams typically rank among the best in the league defensively. Grant and owner Dan Gilbert have been unhappy with the progress the Cavs have made defensively since Brown was fired.

Brown met in Detroit with Gilbert and Grant on Sunday and negotiations quickly escalated. The Cavs intended to move quickly on a replacement all along, according to sources, because so many coaching vacancies are expected this summer.

ESPN.com reported the Phoenix Suns reached out to Brown to gauge his interest and CBS Sports identified Brown as a top candidate for the Philadelphia 76ers’ vacancy.

Provided the remaining few details can be worked out, it appears Brown is off the market — and the Cavs’ new coach is also their old one.

Cavs, Mike Brown negotiating

Mike Brown and the Cleveland Cavaliers are currently negotiating a contract that will make him the team's coach -- for the second time, according to league sources.

Brown and Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert had a Sunday night dinner meeting that went well, according to sources close to the situation.

Cleveland also reached out to Phil Jackson over the weekend, but Jackson's representatives told the team that Jackson has no interest in the Cavs' coaching job, sources said.

The Cavaliers have not reached out to anyone else, besides Brown and Jackson.

Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant also attended the meeting with Brown, which was held in Detroit.

Brown was expected to be a highly sought-after coach this summer, when several coaching positions are expected to be open.

But sources say he views the Cavs' position as one of the top jobs available, or potentially available, because of All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving and the club's substantial amount of salary-cap space.

While the Cavs certainly were intrigued by Jackson, their contact with him was viewed more as due diligence, as they figured that Jackson would not be interested. Jackson is more interested in taking a front-office position with an NBA team, according to sources.
Mike Brown finalizing five-year contract to return as Cavaliers coach
By Adrian Wojnarowski | Yahoo! Sports

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Mike Brown are finalizing a five-year, $20 million-plus contract for him to return as coach, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Mike Brown spent a little more than one season as the Lakers coach after leaving Cleveland. Brown was still ironing out details about his control within basketball operations, but a formal announcement will come as soon as Wednesday.

After five seasons with the Cavaliers, Brown was fired prior to LeBron James' free agency in the summer of 2010. The Cavaliers are determined to try and lure James back if he opts out of his contract with the Miami Heat in the summer of 2014. James and Brown had an up-and-down relationship, and many within the league don't believe that Brown's return would be especially enticing to James.

Nevertheless, Cleveland wants to shore up what was the worst defense in the league under previous coach Byron Scott, who was let go last week. Cavaliers officials understand Brown can do that for them.
Mike Brown, Cavaliers closing in on a reunion
Sam Amick, USA TODAY Sports4:12 p.m. EDT April 23, 2013

The Mike Brown reunion in Cleveland is nearly complete.

According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the Cavaliers are closing in on a deal that would bring their former coach back nearly three years after he was fired just months before LeBron James left for Miami. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the negotiations.

There are still unresolved issues in the talks, including length of the deal (Brown wants five years) and control over personnel. If Brown's deal is finalized as expected, the next question becomes what that means for the Cavs' eventual hopes of having a reunion with James as well.

The Heat star has the ability to become a free agent in the summer of 2014, and it's widely known that he will consider the notion of returning to his home state to continue his championship pursuits. James' acrimonious departure from Cleveland in the summer of 2010 meant the notion was once thought to be impossible. It remains unclear if James would want to play for Brown again.

Brown had two years and $11 million left on his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers when he was fired five games into the season. The Akron-Beacon Journal was first to report on Brown nearing an agreement with the Cavaliers. The newspaper reported that an announcement could be made as early as Wednesday.

CLEVELAND -- Mike Brown and the Cleveland Cavaliers are getting back together.

Brown, who led the Cavs to the playoffs in all five seasons he coached them from 2005-10, has agreed to a four-year, $20 million deal with a fifth-year team option, sources told ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst and ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard. The deal will pay Brown $5 million per year, according to sources.

Brown's hiring could be announced as early as Wednesday.

Brown will return to the job the Cavs fired him from in 2010 despite back-to-back 60-win seasons. He was the Cavs' top choice for the job and the only person they interviewed, though they did reach out to gauge Phil Jackson's possible interest.

Brown met with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and general manager Chris Grant over the weekend in Detroit.

A major factor in Brown's decision to accept the job is that his family had planned to move back to Cleveland this summer after he was fired as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this season. Brown also has a strong and long-standing relationship with Grant.

The Cavs wanted to move fast to secure Brown. Sources told ESPN.com that Brown already had turned down the Phoenix Suns' coaching position and could've become a candidate for other jobs in the coming days.

Sources say Brown views the Cavs' position as one of the top jobs available, or potentially available, because of All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving and the club's substantial amount of salary-cap space.

Brown went 272-138 and went to the playoffs every season with the Cavs, teaming with LeBron James on a run to the NBA Finals in 2007. He was fired after the Cavs lost to Boston in the 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals, shortly before James decided he was leaving Cleveland as a free agent.

Brown spent one full season with the Lakers, but was fired by Los Angeles five games into this season.

The Cavs have been without a coach since firing Byron Scott last week following his third straight losing season.

Hot Potato!

Fucking shit

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

I for one am looking forward to watching a team that plays defense.

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

I spent the past few days talking myself into this anyway, so I'll live.

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

Mike Brown is a good coach, I don't care what anyone on here says. He is not a bad coach. We need help badly on defense and he will bring it. They say defense leads to offense. Just hope he has a legit offensive coordinator with him next year. We will be back to the playoffs next year!!

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

Mike Brown is so good at coaching defense and defensive schemes, that the Magic in 08-09 and Celtics in 09-10 both averaged over 100 ppg against the Cavs.

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

Something that is important to remember is the fact that even with Lebron he still got EVERYONE to play defense and I think that is incredibly important

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

We just got ourselves a very good coach. What remains to be seen is if he has grown/adapted enough in a few areas and ultimately(and most importantly) what type of talent and athleticism the roster has over the next 5 years. A lot of our good defensive teams where in spite of having stiff, old, or one legged backline/front court players(Z, Wallace, Shaq)

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

Disaster.

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

sky, falling, etc

Re: Lloyd: Mike Brown expected to be announced as head coach tomorrow

I can (not that they give any crap about me) fully back this IF they hire Eric Musselman as his assistant coach. He is a great basketball mind and next to Brown could really be a nice one-two punch.

I'll give the Cavs credit for doing something no one in the NBA has ever done before. That is at the very least thinking outside of the box.

Fool me once...

Hints have been dropped about it for a week. The big question will be assistant coaches, especially assistant head coach. His past three assistant head coaches (Keuster, Messina, Jordan) were basically offensive coordinators.
