I've been reading a lot of background on Miller the last couple days. Apparently anywhere he goes, he's always everyone's favorite teammate. I'm not a guy that usually puts much weight on things like "locker room impact", but in Miller's case it really does seem quite substantial. He was the only guy on our team last year who could simultaneously connect to our stars, other veterans, young guys, and our entire coaching staff. He basically served as the glue that kept everyone in harmony.

Even though his playing days are nearly over, I'd be surprised if he doesn't get some kind of coaching job in the next couple years. He seems like the kind of guy players would run through walls for.
id rather it was this year since he barely played more than moondogg last year and wil be a year older now.

buy the contract out, free up a space, have some more moeny ready

Having one guy out of 15 that can't play wont kill us. Just dont want 4-5 like last year. Which is why I have been fighting the good fight that we need to expand our bench and not rely on the Joe Harris's of the world.
The pattern has been someone says we need a deeper bench. Someone then posts a reply saying our bench is awesome and it was just injuries and they get about 20 thanks.
The idea that we wont get injuries is unrealistic. I just hope they come early in the season. What Golden State experienced was a once in a lifetime bill of health/ Bottom line is we are still thin given we have no backup SF and Andy's injury history. The only areas we have depth in my opinion is PG and PF (SG too as long JR is brought back) otherwise I think there is legit concern at the other positions.

Question - is there anything illegal with the following scenario?

The Cavs and Miller collaborate and Miller decides to retire. The Cavs then hire him as an assistant coach at $2M/year (which is crazily inflated for a coach, but is about his contract value this year).

The Cavs save the luxury tax that they would have paid for the Miller contract (which is probably $5M or so) - Miller can't play, but he's not going to anyway, and he can basically do all the stuff behind the scenes that he normally does.

Do rules prohibit that? Of course, Miller might actually want to put on basketball shorts everyday, who knows...

Thanks for your hustle and veteran leadership...Will always remember that dive in game 4.

Will miss his leadership. Maybe POR releases Miller and we can pick him up for a part of the coaching staff?

Have to think LeBron signed off on Miller getting traded. Fact that he was amnestied in Miami was reported to have irked him quite a bit.

This move isn't to save money though, like that was. This move is to set-up the acquisition of another piece to an already title-ready squad.

Really liked Mike Miller the guy. Wasn't a huge fan of Mike Miller the current player.

So long bud. Was nice having you here for awhile.

Thanks MM!! You were a good soldier, a positive person, and I was glad you were here. I'm almost sure this is your last year in the league. It's been a nice career. Enjoy your monies.

Wonder if MM will still wear his LeBron shirt under his jersey in Portland. :chuckle:

I honestly can't see Mike Miller suiting up for Portland next season. They're going to be pretty bad.

My guess is with a team that has a lot of young players they will try to keep him around as a positive locker room guy and mentor. I'm guessing he would want to play a decent amount too, and if he proves that he can still play then Portland could try to trade him to a contender at the deadline and get something for him.

Thank you, Mike Miller.
Wasn't a Cavalier for long, but I enjoyed that he was anything but anti-social when he was here

He served his purpose. Trading him was best for both sides.
