NBA Coaching Musical Chairs

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They gave him a 6 year deal I saw.

He probably figures he got paid so even if it goes south he is set. I still think you always want to be the coach like Mike Brown who steps in once the losing is over than the one who guides the team through the losing.

Haven't seen that really ever work in too many places, as that first coach is usually out the door before the payoff comes.

Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA now
The Boston Celtics signed Brad Stevens to a six year, $22 million contract, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

but this goes against everything you believe in!

College coaches are GMs and coaches. When he gets hired to assemble the roster in Boston, your trolling will be valid.

Actually, Woj tweeting that is irrelevant unless Stevens brings his wiz kid Cannon with him. Even then, Cannon didnt come onboard until after the two cinderella runs to the National Championship.

Maybe Butler would have a title by now if Stevens hadnt hired the analytic wizkid (rebound troll)

Not trolling at all, just noting your uncharacteristic love for a guy who embraces analytics.

Stevens is a math nerd, who just so happens to love analytics.

On the court though, he coaches with a resolve and confidence I love seeing. I like the way his guys all seem to buy into whatever he is selling. Its all patience and discipline, on both sides of the court. Very methodical too. But then, he'll always have that one guard like Shelvin, Van Leer (sp) and this little Rodnei guy from last season, who has the green light to do whatever they hell they want on offense. And it just somehow works. Its the equivalent of San Antonio always having one firecracker totally undisciplined player amongst a group of boyscouts. I was amazed at how he seems like a players coach, but he still seems fully in control of everything on the court throughout the course of a game.

Where college coaches get in trouble coming up to the league, is they always want and need control of the roster. And he wont have that in Boston. So it will be interesting to see how he adjusts as a coach to the players he has in front of him, or the egos he will have to manage over a season 2x as long.

Love the Stevens hire. He's got that never-panicked look and demeanor, which I love in a coach. If the coach is freaking out, so will the players. Get the sense that no matter how bad it gets in Boston, and if they deal Rondo its gonna get bad, he's gonna keep on plowing through and not get down on himself or his players.

Reminds me of a better Frank Vogel. He is a great hire, and should succeed in the NBA fairly quickly.

Brad Stevens is one answer to the question posters constantly asked of, well who would you rather have than Mike Brown?

I didn't think of him at the time, but yea, he'd be on my list.

I posted several months ago on the "Nominations to replace Coach Scott" thread that we should look into Brad Stevens from Butler and nobody seemed interested. Now that one of the winningest franchises in all of sports hired him it makes you question why the Cavs, a team with a very young squad and a heavy reliance on advanced statistics/analytics would not at least get this guy in for an interview...

You're right that Stevens is an intriguing hire, esp. with analytics and obvious college talent. But it wasn't a good fit for the Cavs, who wanted someone more experienced at this stage. They couldn't afford waiting for him to get used to the NBA game. He could do well in Boston if he can withstand what looks like will be some lean years. He's the kind of coach it would have nice to have hired 3 years ago, but the circumstances at that time were also really different, and he wouldn't have been considered then either.

Didn't he celtics also hire famed college coach rick pitino? That was such a great decision if memory serves. Good college coaches are not instantly good pro coaches, although Stevens seems to have some of the skills (analytics, rapport ) that are valued in the NBA

Yes, because college coaches have such a great history of making the transition to the pros...
