Started watching Gomorrah, an Italian series that's been drawing comparisons to The Wire, which of course is my pick for the greatest TV show ever made. I'm on episode two, but I'm liking it so far. It's based on a true crime novel of the same name (minus the H, I believe) and is about organized crime in Naples. I'm not totally sure where the story is going yet, as I haven't really read much about the actual story, just heard people saying it was great, violent, and devastating. It's got subtitles (unless you understand Italian, I suppose), which may be a deal breaker for some, but one of my favorite films is City of God, so I don't really mind.
Hard to say whether or not I recommend it yet since I've only finished one episode (watching two right now), and most TV shows are a slow burn. I liked the first episode, and it was surprisingly violent. I'm definitely going to stick with it. As far as the comparisons to The Wire go, Gomorrah is, at least so far, entirely focused on the criminals. No cops have popped up as actual characters yet.
The first episode seems to set the stage, though. You've got an aging crime boss who is a bit too gung ho about going to war with his rivals and his incompetent son who is by no means ready to take over. You've also got a guy working for him who is clearly not on board with some of the things he's being asked to do. Should be interesting to see where it all goes, as I've heard the first season has some pretty shocking moments.
Interesting side note: the guy who wrote the book is apparently under twenty-four hour armed protection as a result of writing said book. So I guess the people he wrote about don't fuck around. I find the subject matter really interesting, because while we have thousands of movies about organized crime in America, we don't get to see realistic accounts of it from other countries anywhere near as often.
