New TV Series to watch

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Started watching Mr. Mercedes a few nights ago. It's based on a Stephen King book (which I have not yet read) about a killer who murders over a dozen people by running them down with a stolen Mercedes. Two years later, he starts sending messages to taunt the retired cop who couldn't catch him.

I'm midway through episode three and I'm enjoying it so far. The opening scene with the car rampage was great in that it was very uncomfortable. You knew it was coming, which made it nice and tense. I find seeing someone get crushed by a car to have a much greater impact visually than a generic stabbing or shooting, of which we see in the movies on and TV every goddamn day.

Apparently King wrote two sequels to Mr. Mercedes, so I assume that if the show comes back the subsequent seasons will be based on those. The show has gotten generally positive reviews, so I'm hoping it ends up being worthwhile. The first two episodes were nothing groundbreaking and they moved pretty slow, but they at least have a nice hook and an interesting story.

So far, so good on Stranger Things through episode four.

I have a question for the folks out there: Why are people obsessed with the Barb character? She has become some weird standard-bearer for a set of people.

Yeah, sucks she died, but what else was she than an awkward sex-shamer?

I think it was just a joke about how Barb went missing and no one really gave a shit.

I don't know. My FB feed and sites like the AV Club or Vice have made her into some martyr or something for nerds? Big-boned girls? I don't know.

Saying shit like "Barb is us."

"Who cares about Will Byers? He is a lazy lay-about who got lost. What of the plight of virtuous and clean Barb?"

Uuugh... her charactor was so uninteresting. Far as I could tell, she was only around so Nancy could feel guilty about her eventual death. Really had absolute;y no effect on me when she got killed last season.

Anyways, I finished the new season. Every bit as good as the first season. Well worth watching. I highly recommend it.

Just finished season 1 of ST...I had forgotten how good it was. The show creators totally nailed the vibe they were going for and were so consistent in doing so.

I really can't afford to spend so much time watching season two quickly, but I am weak.

Game of Thrones is the greatest...but Stranger Things may be greater.

The acting in stranger things is a little.. Silly..

Episode 4. Maybe it's the editing. But it's.. Silly.

I read some thought pieces on Barb. It seems some people identified with her in a real way.

Generally, it seems like people who were not popular in HS, or were awkward, are not popular with the opposite sex, were resentful of popular kids, or otherwise folks who carry crosses for not being "sellouts," saw themselves in her. You know... losers.

Now that I think on it I see it. People are so narcissistic these days that they are always making everything about themselves. I don't see the character that way. She is a judgmental wet blanket and slut-shamer. Not a great friend.
