That is good

It's good because with contracts they just gave out to Martin and the Ginger Kid the Wolves matching any offer to Pek above 12-13 mil a season is going to hurt them big when they go to extend Rubio.

It also means if they suck this year Love might just become available at the deadline due to them still sucking and being in cap purgatory for at least 4 years with the current roster and Pek making over 12 mil.

Just to be on the safe side let's toss the max at pek.

Anyone have the numbers on Minnesota's team salary since adding Martin and Budinger's new deal? None of the sites I check have been updated.

They probably won't have the exact numbers until after the 10th since no one can sign until then

They are paying roughly 13 mil combined for those two according to reports so that's just what I've been adding to the non-updated cap numbers (not totally accurate but gives a decent range of where to expect them to be)

They were at 39 before the giving out those deals.

They only had 3 mil in team option contracts so they are roughly sitting between 49-53 mil$ with out a deal for Pek and the deals for Martin and the ginger figured in

So an offer of about 11-12 million puts them right at the cap, and that's with Rubio's deal coming up. I'm tempted to do it if only for the possibility of pushing Love onto the trading block sooner rather than later. But it's a dangerous game. Toronto played it last year with Landry Fields, and lost.

dirty math- they are at 50 million with 10 players on the books

Exactly, it is a situation to pay clost attention to, at least from a Cavs interest prespective. If Pek gets a max it makes really hard for Minny to match because that point they would be saying Love, Rubio and Pek are good enough trio to be a top 4 team....

I expect Dalls to go hard after either Bynum or Pek.

I'm hoping they gun for Pek first, that honestly maybe best case for us as Cavs fans since Cuban is one that isn't shy about over paying for players imo.

Larry Johnson and Charles Barkley started out their careers with Alonzo Mourning and Moses Malone. It would make sense to get a defensive, rebounding big man for Anthony Bennett. I think the cost of 15 million for Pekovic and that Asik costs 8 million and will require a trade with players going out sort of cancel each other out. Pek will be expensive, but Asik will require sacrafices as well.

Asik/Bennett seem to be a seemless fit. I don't see how Asik fits with Varejao, and Thompson. I don't consider him a better fit with the team than Pekovic. Thompson and Varejao will also cause problems for Pekovic floor spacing with his low post play.

As a fan I think Pekovic provides more excitement. He's clumsy, and awkward, yet he's fairly skilled around the basket, and can just impose his size on opponents. He's that tractor traylor type big man except 7' tall. Pek provides a physicality the team just wouldn't have with asik, and has to be defended. With Waiters and Irving penetrating it makes sense to have offensive big men that have to be guarded. You don't want to allow double teaming with undersized guards.

Pek provides problems as a pick and roll liability defensively with irving also being a seive that with asik would not exist. also, with varejao on the team we already have a strong offensive rebounder. So, i don't consider his prowess to pound the offensive boards to be impactful for us as we're already a good offensive rebounding team, whereas asik provides defensive rebounding in a area of need.

Pek is much better for the offense, and asik much better for the defense. The team is hurting defensively, and i'm not sure Asik can do much about it. whereas the team is likely to take another step immediately offensive and Pekovic can raise that boat even further.

In sum the defense looks like a sinking ship, and the offense looks like where we will see our boats rise.

I'd side with the offensive guy, and let mike brown worry about the defense.

It just looks like the offense is about complete, and pek could open up single coverage at all positions. Earl Clark may be left alone, but he showed last year he had a mid range game, and can knock down the jumper. He went from an efg% of 27% on his jumpers in orlando to 42% in l.a.

I think it's a tougher call than you'd think.

Neither center is a perfect fit. But, Tim Duncan is not available. Next years free agent crops at center suck. Bogut, and Gortat are the top of the line. So, it doesn't get any better next year. The time to get a center is now. There's no reason to wait.

The Wolves don't have to extend Rubio. In fact, if I was their GM, I would not. No sense in having a PG who is not a good defender and poor shooter. Their focus should be on maintaining Pekovic and Love. It's much easier to find a PG than a big like Pek.

-Even with agreements tonite w/ PMillsap and DCarroll, Atlanta still is most likely of those spurned by DH-12 to make Pek a big offer.

-Could gone past the July 10 moratorium end date. Yes, they'll match any offer. Doesn't necessarily mean he'll remain here, tho

-if price gets too rich, they'd either try to sign-and-trade him or sign him and trade soon down road, like Den did w/ Nene

-At this point, they're not letting him get away for nothing in return. no chance they let someone else sign him and not match

The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly trying to offer a deal to a free-agent center in an effort to complete their playoff puzzle, a source close to situation reported on Thursday. One possible scenario is to pull off a sign-and-trade deal with the Cavs sending Anderson Verajao to the Wolves for Pekovic, who's a restricted free-agent.

How does this make any sense? We could just make him an offer and not have to give up anything. If we wanted to do a sign and trade then Minn would have to come to agreement on the same contract that we could offer him outright. And if the concern is that they might match, we can still do a sign and trade after that. Potentially (though very unlikely) if the contract is unreasonable that Pek signs with Minn and they are really interested in keeping Rubio then we can try to sweeten the pot to get Love. Either way, a sign and trade seems like a random idea by an uninformed sports reporter that focuses on women's soccer.

Ricky Rubio is better than Pekovic. So that probably factors in.

And if it didn't, the fact that Rubio is like 22 and Pekovic is 27 is the trump card.

He's a restricted free agent. We make him an offer, he signs, and the Minnesota matches the offer, and he's now a Timberwolve, whether he wants to be or not. So the idea is if we make the offer and then Minnesota matches, we would need to work out a trade afterwards. Or, we could just work out a Sign and Trade before hand.
