Nikola Pekovic

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He's a restricted free agent. We make him an offer, he signs, and the Minnesota matches the offer, and he's now a Timberwolve, whether he wants to be or not. So the idea is if we make the offer and then Minnesota matches, we would need to work out a trade afterwards. Or, we could just work out a Sign and Trade before hand.

I get that but it doesnt make sense for the Cavs. Its like showing your cards in a game of poker. Right now we can make an offer of whatever we want without them knowing. Maybe Minn wont match. Also, our offer might be high enough where they no longer are interested in keeping their core together and they would choose to take some of our assets for Kevin Love because their 'Big 3' probably wouldnt be good enough to compete for a title. But a preemptive sign and trade would seem like bad negotiating on our behalf. Essentially that says that we decided to offer them more than anyone else from the beginning without even trying the 'poison pill' option.

We assume that Pekovic wants an offer sheet. If he wants out of Minnesota, he won't sign one. Pekovic's agent can attempt to force a S&T with whoever he wants by just stating that they'll accept the QO, play for one year, and then Minnesota will get nothing. If Pekovic wants to get paid now, he doesn't hold any cards. If he's willing to play for the QO, Minnesota has no leverage.

Didn't Eric Gordon and Nic Batum both try that?

They tried it but they didn't commit. You actually have to be willing to sign the QO. It means that you don't ever sign an offer sheet. It just depends on what Pekovic is after. If he just wants to get paid and doesn't care where he plays then he gets the biggest offer sheet he can. If he wants out of Minny, he sticks to his gun and if they don't want to do a S&T, he asks for the QO and accepts it. As soon as he does that Minnesota gets nothing.

That is good

It's good because with contracts they just gave out to Martin and the Ginger Kid the Wolves matching any offer to Pek above 12-13 mil a season is going to hurt them big when they go to extend Rubio.

It also means if they suck this year Love might just become available at the deadline due to them still sucking and being in cap purgatory for at least 4 years with the current roster and Pek making over 12 mil.

I bet poor Chase Budinger thought he outgrew that name. :chuckles:

We're never going to regret trading Andy. Thus far it's been 3 straight years of regretting that we didn't trade him. Hopefully if we could do an Andy for Pek swap we would get Pek for a few million less per season because we didn't have to play chicken with the Wolves and overpay him.

Offer Pek 4/48 for Andy and the Heat pick. Then if that gets all stymied, just offer Pek the max for 2 years and let the Wolves go F themselves.

Pek also misses way too many games, maybe we shouldn't go after him anyways.

The cavs aren't going to spend 40+ million on this guy. Grant want solid affordable vets to maintain his flexibility. Of the right trade/move comes along, he has the assets and money to do it.

He's proving to be very patient.

The Timberwolves have made a formal contract offer to restricted free agent Nikola Pekovic and waived two players in preparation for Wednesday’s end to the NBA moratorium period.

According to league sources, the Wolves made an offer to Pekovic on Friday and expect to receive a response early this week.

On Sunday, they waived center Greg Stiemsma and swingman Mickael Gelabale in two salary-cap moves designed to clear space to allow them to sign free agents Kevin Martin and Chase Budinger as well as bring back Pekovic on a four-year deal that likely will be worth $12 million a year or more.

Minnesota is cap strapped with a team that will likely only win 45-50 games (barring any injuries).

If they resign Pek at 12 mil a year, they're going to be over the cap with with the additions of Martin and Budinger.

They'll have almost 65 million committed to 11 players. They have some decent pieces but that team can't win a title.

Gonna be running on that treadmill for a while.

That is just the name of the game with big men in this league. Hope we could still find a stable solution to our Center problem.

You knew it would cost 10+ million a year for Pek. But 12 a year for five years with no team option? They must be hoping his development and lack of injuries is a trend that will continue. I still can't believe there is no team option on that deal.

So with a 5-year contract, that means that he is their franchise player?
