Official Summer 2022 Offseason discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Wood trade is very interesting, not a bad price at all for a player with his talent and potential. Even though he’ll be 27 next season, so should be a known quantity, I could never get a bead on how good he was because it took him a long time to emerge and then he was on those awful Rockets teams. Had some discipline problems this past year but going to be super interesting to see what he can do in a positive winning environment. He gives Chris Bosh vibes as a skinny front court player who is a good shooter and can play inside and outside. But he is going to have to improve his defense a LOT to fit in with what the Mavs are trying to do.

It’s an important trade for the league because the right addition could make the Mavs a Finals contender and rescue Luka’s career - let’s see if Wood is motivated to be that guy
Playing for the Mavs is... an adjustment for most guys. You're not going there to hold the ball.

I'm skeptical about the fit with Woods.

Burke could kill the trade by declining his player option apparently. I have nothing against either of these teams but it would be funny if Burke is just like nah I don't wanna go to Houston and declines his player option.
There's gonna be alot of pressure on Burke to pick up his $3.3M option. Houston may plan on waiving him anyways.

Eh. I don't like that trade from Dallas tbh.

They're not losing Luka anytime soon and Wood isn't the type of C they really need imo.

He's a solid player but I don't think he really moves the needle much more than just playing Kleber bigger minutes at C.

He's a much better player then Kleber. I think it's a great deal for the Mavericks. 26th pick and scraps for what I view as a big upgrade to their big rotation.

They need a different look. Not just a better player than Kleber.

They need an athletic big who sets good screens and runs to the rim and blocks shots.

He's an upgrade, just not the the kind of upgrade that really improves the team. Think they'd have been better off taking that pick and waiting to see if one of the good Cs from this draft dropped and tried to move up.

I think they still look to add a center. What Wood provides is a legit scoring option at PF and small ball center. Wood can score inside and stretch the floor. He is exactly what they need to make things easier on offense for Doncic. No other big on the Mavericks can do what Wood can for them.

I’m not sure how/if they can pull it off, but Myles Turner would really be a great fit on that team. He’d make them a lot harder to defend with his shooting and rebounding. Wood combined with Turner would be such a massive upgrade to their front court.

I'm skeptical about the fit with Woods.

I'm thinking that the Mavs would have checked with him directly about his commitment to fitting in with the team and their style of play before making the trade. Is that naive of me? Seems a bit unfair to judge Wood entirely on what he was doing in Houston, terrible environment.

Also, offensively, the Mavs constantly passing out for three pointers was kind of too one-dimensional. They could use an inside scorer who could try some interior moves as well (although Woods is also a very good shooter). I'd be more worried about his defensive fit.

They just used their cards to add that center.

Now it's extensively harder. They don't have their pick or their expiring contracts.

Disagree on the Wood > Maxi take. Kleber is a monster on defense. He has the size to be a 4/5 but can slide up and cover wings and some guards too. Super versatile on that end. Very consistent on offense and a reliable shooter too. Wood can block shots a bit but it otherwise lackluster to bad on D. He has more playmaking/shot creation than Maxi but when you've got Luka, you dont really need bigs to create their own offense. I don't hate the fit overall, but Wood is not a better player than Maxi, just more expensive.

Cmon dude Kleber shot under 40% this year from the field on mostly catch and shoots, averaged like 5 rebounds, Woods a double double guy who shot over 50% without an actually point guard on the roster.

Imagine what he could do with Luka setting him up.

I don’t know if anybody watched the last Olympics but Luka was absolutely deadly with a big who could pick and pop.

Imo it’s an awesome move and it’s going to unlock Luka in a way we havnt see before.

To top it off they didn’t even lose anybody, they still have Kleber and Powel

Kleber is a certified winner and legit two way big. Jury is out on Wood since every team he has played on so far has been deep lottery

Mavs have two frontcourt positions and Wood, Powell, Kleber, and maybe the awful Bertans as legit frontcourt players (Finney-Smith seems more like a SF to me). I don't think they'll have trouble finding minutes for all three of Wood/Powell/Kleber. Adding a guy who can legit play center, score from inside, shoot 40% from 3, and add all kinds of offensive versatility seems like a big win to me, even though Wood needs major improvements on defense to fully pay off for them.

Now they just need to somehow dump that Bertans contract...

What exactly makes Kleber a certified winner?
