Potential 2019 Head coaches for the Browns

I'm being honest when I say this: I'd rather have Pettine back than hire McCarthy.

I watch a lot of Green Bay Packers games since I believe Aaron Rodgers is the greatest QB of all time. You guys are seriously underrating the hell out of Mike McCarthy. The problem in Green Bay has never been the coaching. It's been the team building. They literally traded their best DB last week for a draft pick and proceeded to get shredded last night and lose DB's left and right. They refuse to give Aaron Rodgers a reliable running game for years.

They never spend in FA even though they're always in position to be a team that should spend in FA to get the missing pieces for a Super Bowl run. If you look at some of their playoff eliminations they've actually lost a few playoff games on some really flukey shit. Like the overtime loss against AZ or the loss in SEA after a failed onside kick recovery. Both of those losses cost them a chance at a Super Bowl.

Also I'd like for the people who keep saying McCarthy doesn't have it anymore or the game has passed him by to explain themselves. Yes we know Aaron Rodgers is great but what exactly has McCarthy not been doing with what they have? They've never had a true #1 receiver there aside from maybe Jordy Nelson when he was healthy. They've always had decent TE's and RB by committee. They have more issues with team building than coaching.

I would welcome Mike McCarthy here. Give me an experienced NFL Coach who knows how to lead a team. I don't want a college coach and there's only a few coordinators who I'd even consider. I want a retread with a good track record or one of the top 3 coordinators.

If I had to rank the coordinators I'd probably go

Pete Carmichael
John DeFilipo
Eric B

In that order. Not interested in Josh McDaniels and I'm not of the belief that you have to get a coach from a specific coaching tree or not. If we can't get one of those 3 coordinators than give me McCarthy, either one of the Harbaugh's, or Tomlin. You can find a good offensive coordinator. It's much harder to find a really good Head Coach. We need a really good Head Coach and we all prefer that he has a good offensive mind. It doesn't have to be both though. If you can get a really solid OC hire than any one of those retreads would be perfect. Finally, please get someone who isn't a specialist and can run a damn team. I think that's what Dorsey wants anyway. I don't think he's pressing for hot offensive coordinator dude. He's looking for a leader. Give me a leader.

I don't quite understand all the McCarthy hate myself. The guy has been to two NFC Championship games in the last four seasons, but people are claiming he is one of the top 5 worst coaches in the league?

Yeah as a poster stated above the packers front office continues to put shitty players around Rodgers which isn’t McCarthys problem

Just fans being fanatical.

Well one positive.....Dorsey has plenty of time to evaluate the candidates he may be interested in hiring.

John Harbaugh? :chuckle:

(You’ve all thought about it!)

wow thoughts? Could prob only coach like 3-4 seasons but if he right the ship and establish a culture and a young protege under him (kitchens?)

Hire experience. We mentioned to Arians that a Mike Mularkey type might appeal to Dorsey. Mularkey has had three NFL head coaching jobs, most recently with a Titans team that beat the Chiefs in a playoff game in January.

“My guy would be Chuck Pagano,” Arians said.

Pagano, 58, was hired in Cleveland the same year as Arians, 2001. He lasted through the 2004 season, eventually became defensive coordinator in Baltimore, then was hired as head coach of the Colts. Pagano hired the “retired” Arians as offensive coordinator for rookie No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck (Arians had been Colts “OC” in 1998, when Peyton Manning was a rookie No. 1 overall pick).

On one hand, I was all excited because I wanted the shiny new penny....

On the other hand, it’s Bruce Fuckin’ Arians....

So it sounds like Bruce Arians would love to be our next Head Coach and if given the chance his staff would probably be

Chuck Pagano as DC
Freddie Kitchens as OC
Amos Jones as ST Coach?

Either way I like his mindset. Experience. We don't need the next big thing. We need a sure thing. We need a coach who's been around the block. I really like the tidbit about Arians coaching Manning and Luck as their OC their rookie years. I do think that Chuck Pagano is a good coach. Definitely a guy who is better as a coordinator than a Head Coach but he also wasn't as bad as a HC as people make it seem.

This part about Butch and Fazio pissed me the fuck off all over again. I still remember watching that game and fuck Butch Davis forever for this

Arians has told us his view of why the lone playoff game of the expansion era got away. Namely: Defensive coordinator Foge Fazio wanted to go for the jugular, attacking Pittsburgh, seizing the day. Davis wanted to play a prevent, and, being the head coach, prevent it was.

Davis relieved Fazio of his command during the second half.

Internal discord is not new. Fazio was fired immediately after Davis’ prevent didn’t work (the Browns lost 36-33). The 2003 season sagged. The day after it ended, Arians was fired and replaced by wideouts coach Terry Robiskie, who a year later became interim head coach after Davis quit late in the season.
