Like, I click on an article and read this - "She won’t be allowed to be a black princess. The only way she can be accepted is to pass for white,” Kehinde Andrews, an associate professor of sociology at Birmingham City University who launched the first black studies degree in Europe, told Newsweek. “If there are people who are celebrating, it’s a bit naive, and they’ll be very disappointed.”

I wasn't expecting to read that, especially not about a country like Great Britain. I don't think an interracial relationship is a big deal in 2017 but it's clear that some out there do.

Yea i thought England was more about class conflict than race.

I obviously know very little about shit over there.

It seems like some just treat it as "A Thread About Black People." But they don't wanna call it that, for obvious reasons... Even though we have and tolerate threads about women, and the "terrorist" thread is the de facto Muslim thread...

It's just ... gross. And whenever I say, hey.. just ask the Black posters, or the women posters, or the LGBT posters here what they think; no one wants to, because they know what the answer will be.

This is a brutal assessment and I think it is really accurate.

Since the dissolution of the Empire in the late 1960s it has been both.

You should read up on this fellow:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enoch_Powell

To say his views were nuanced and complicated is an understatement. He was a genius that spoke 14 languages and went from being a Private in 1939, when he was the youngest professor in Britain, to a Brigadier in 1944 as a member of British Military Intelligence. His views on the integration of immigrants into the UK pretty much sum up the situation as Britons see it over the past 40-50 years. His views evolved as has the nation's.

Are you familiar with Powell, @gourimoko?

Before I jump too far ahead, I think his views are going to represent how SOME brits feel about immigration right?

At the time (1969) 80% agreed with him.

Considering the success of "Leave" I would say a fair number of Britons still agree with him, even if they don't fully understand the nuance of his arguments.

Yea i follow an English (classical) liberal and he's pretty anti immigration. It seemed odd that he was. Tends to be reasonably socially liberal on most things

@gourimoko your post made me think.

Sincere question - ideally what would you like these threads to be like (and this thread in particular)? If some feel that the threads aren't up to snuff then I think that we can all work to improve the conversations for everyone.

Anti-immigration is stance that can be complicated.

There are legitimate arguments in Europe for a better defined system. Sweden has greatly slowed down the number of refugees it receives simply because they have run out of room after welcoming millions since the 90s.

I heard it's also costing them a fortune. (18b a year in housing) And that there is a crime issue and only .3% are working.

Makes socialism kinda hard I imagine

The Swedes have a social democracy, not socialism.

They have a robust, capitalistic economy.

But yes, the actual shortages are in housing.

Well people here were arguing that it was socialism.

In any event it doesn't work with open borders/mass immigration. Whatever you want to call it.

Honestly man, I don't know that these threads really serve a purpose if not to discuss the 'otherness' of people we're not familiar with or don't understand...

You would think a thread about race, particularly about Black people, specifically, would be something where folks could talk to Black posters and try to understand them better -- rather than ... this ...

I mean, I appreciate the idea that we should have threads about race; but what's the point if people are just reinforcing their own preconceived notions, over and over? If it's simply an echochamber then what's the point?

I don't know that this is really the space for such a conversation -- I mean, perhaps if there were some ample moderation, but none exists in this space, it's effectively EAYOR.

There's as many kinds of "socialism" as there are "capitalism" and "communism." It's just not that simple.

Countries like Sweden, being "social democracies" exist in a middle ground between Marxist socialism and lasseiz-faire capitalism. But social democracy is more of a political ideology than an economic system. These are countries with strong social programs and a social safety net, with higher taxes to pay for these programs. But if you mean "socialist" as in, the state owns the means of production, then no.

Yeah, I've mostly stayed out of this thread and not voiced any opinions, just like the Trump thread. Whenever I do click on the newest page, it's always some kind of offensive shitshow one way or the other.
