Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Shape of Water, - 6/10. I was underwhelmed as well but the cinematography was a 9/10. Loved the early 60s sets.

The Post - 7/10. Entertaining, and I didn't know the history of the Pentagon Papers. Obviously very relevant with today's political attacks on the free press. Tom Hanks is Tom Hanks in every movie. He's a glue guy at this point and sadly I don't think he gets the Academy attention he deserves for always doing his job. Meryl Streep was very good even if her part called for her to be passive, while Bob Odenkirk was great as always.

3 Billboards - 8/10. Very entertaining. Some plot holes (the ending, why are all the black people in Missouri Brooklyn hipsters?) but overall a good movie with some strong performances.

Seems like a very weak year for the Academy. Kind of like the year Crash won (Brokeback should have won Best Picture.) EDIT: Just realized Get Out was nominated for Best Picture. Great movie. That was the best one I saw in the past year. Hope it wins.

Has anyone seen Hostiles? Really considering seeing both it and Phantom Thread this week.

The Shape of Water - 4/10 — And the 4 is just for all of the good actors. So many plot holes. Just completely overrated and gross. But the bright side is that it made me chuckle when I thought about the inter species erotica (circa Clerks 2). I really wish I never saw the movie. Or maybe I just didn’t see the “beauty” in that love story. And it was also “alledgely” plagiarized. (I believe it is)

Anyone who has played Mass Effect knows that we all secretly want to bang a hot blue alien.

Look, I haven't seen the film, but the way I read about that aspect of the film you'd think this was a piece of art that defined a generation of film-making.

To each their own. Sounds fucked up to me, will not watch.

People obviously loved it. Again, maybe I looked too much into the gapping plot holes and not so much of the visual (cinematography) or the love story.

What did you see as the big plot holes?

Just saw it last night. No spoiler, just make sure you're there for the opening scene. I found myself looking at my phone to see what time it was after a while, not knowing how long it ran. It tends to drag at times during the down moments but the action scenes are great. Other than it being a bit long it was a very good movie. Christian Bale was great.

Opening scene was incredible then all downhill after that. I left with about 35 minutes left in the movie.

Why did this post get a disagree? :chuckle:

I saw the Phantom Thread on @kosis ' recommendation..

Kosis... you steered me wrong, bro. :chuckle:

I was really looking forward to it but, the film spends an inordinate amount of time establishing these characters only to turn things around abruptly, and then end on a very anti-climatic note.

Can't say I'd recommend anyone watch it.

Ha!

No no no no. I gotta disagree.

Where was the betrayal of character?

Clearly Alma came into the relationship wide-eyed and falling Reynolds. She started to realize there were ways in which she could stay on his good side, saw it as her challenge... capturing- at least partially- the focus this older man she fell for. She rides for him when the dress is taken to bed by the one woman. He's turned on by it. The one thing she can't handle is his blatant disrespect towards her, the taunts, the public shaming. She looks beyond convention. She needs to weaken his senses, she needs to put mushrooms in this mothereffer's omelette. His name is Reynolds Woodcock. This was always going to be the outcome, ha.

I didn't think it was at all abrupt. Felt like it was bubbling from the moment his sister walks in the room and Alma had the "Wait, why the hell is she here... and why didn't you bother mentioning it?" face. She wasn't going to accept status quo, but she also wasn't going to leave.

The fact that he essentially consented to her going Munchausen on him was wild, but made sense too. He clearly gets off on psychological torture. The insanity brings a balance to both lives.

I thought it was a great character study of these people, acted out brilliantly. I like it more as the days go by which is a good hallmark, at least to me, of a lasting piece of art.

You're wrong, sir!

Y'all, @gourimoko can represent lovely on a lot of topics, but we Phantom Threaders got him on this. (I concede that I may be the only fan on this board so far.)

I think I'm in a vast minority that is willing To overlook plot holes/deficiency for a quality singular role, good cinematography/editing.

I'd like to see what you think. I don't see the deficiency that @gourimoko sees and hope he dives a bit deeper into what his issues were with it.
