Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I just dont get the hatred toward Rubio. He cant play in USA anymore, he cant be away from his kids, it sent him in a tail spin. Playing in his hometown or training is not the same as coming over here to America and playing away from his family.

He cant compete on a NBA level anyways. He took a buyout and retired from the NBA. If it was all about money, he would of showed up and done nothing to get his full money.

The Cavs took a chance on a guy after a 2nd knee injury. Rubio from injury, kids, missing his mom, ect went into a mental tailspin. The two sides came to an agreement. Both handled it professionally and in the right way.

Sure i would love to be able to failback like Rubio and make millions, but i am not an athlete, i dont have a contract as an athlete with protections from the players association and the CBA.

Some of you are just being petty and complete assholes. Move on. The Cavs and Rubio moved on, its not your money, it didnt work out.

I think this gets glossed over pretty easily. Rubio would likely be taking CPJ's minutes or be borderline unplayable. He could have just came back, performed below standard, and gotten paid for the remainder of his deal.

It was a questionable contract to even begin with. I am grateful he gave the Cavs an out that worked out for all parties involved. I am sure that won't satisfy the tough out your mental illness crowd.

What I don’t get though is he’s been in the nba what 13 years or so? Why not move your family to the US? That was a decision he made.

I loved Rubio the first time, after he got hurt I said I wouldnt of signed him, age and re-injuring the same knee and same tendens, I question his ability to come back.

Sports is rough, its a what have you done for me lately league for sure.

He is Spanish, he loves his country and maybe his wife doesnt want to move or he wants to raise his kids in Spain. Its a personal decision.

We lost Lebron because his family wanted to move to LA and he wanted to live in the same town as his family. It happens.

You must not have watched the Big Lebowski.

I didnt catch it...i saw it, but its been forever. Good movie, but not the level to me that so many others feel.

But I respect that its a cult classic, just not one that makes my fave list. So not a surprise I didnt catch the reference.

I’ll assume this is a serious question.

If you’ve lived in Spain and you’ve lived in the USA, there’s simply an incomparable quality of life, with all due respect. Food is better, weather is better, history/architecture is better, cost of living is drastically lower, oh yeah and it is his home etc. US is better if you want to make more money and care about prestige/achievement or being at the pinnacle of research/tech/finance etc. but for regular people probably incomparable.

Now if you have to find a job and acquire a stash, different story, especially for the younger generation and if not in a city, but he will never have any financial need for the rest of his life. Rising through the ranks and getting jobs beyond the menial in Spain is not straightforward and even software developers make 2/3 times less than USA.

I won’t say life in the United States is bad, I’ve enjoyed my time in American cities and a good solid middle class life is still possible away from the coasts, but I think depending on what you value somewhere like Spain is better. It strikes me he has a bit more a regular man vibe.

Even Jokic/Doncic go back to Serbia/Slovenia every summer… you’d think the US might have the advantage over even those countries in Europe, but to many (not all) for the last 30 years post fall of the wall, answer is no

Growing up in Spain, Ricky Rubio had a decision to make. At just 10, he showed promise as an athlete and was asked to choose between basketball and soccer.

“The real football,” he said.

He was a good soccer player, and the popularity of the sport in his country compelled him to throw everything into it. That lasted for about a month.

Rubio could not ignore a connection to basketball that ran deep. His father was a basketball coach. His older brother was an accomplished player. But more than family ties called to him. The rhythm of the game, the metronomic beat created by the ball bouncing on the hardwood, was music to his ears. The angles and geometry needed to excel created equations he reveled in solving.

“I decided I miss basketball too much. It’s something that was inside of me,” he said. “Nobody pushed me to play basketball. It’s just a sport that I fell in love with because of how complex it is in all single details in the game.
