Rodney Hood: Won't be missed

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm 100% on the Hood-is-terrible boat. But the Pelicans apparently are not, for whatever reason. That makes them a potential s+t destination. We can debate back and forth about the specifics of the hypothetical deal, but the basic ingredients are there.
Wait, they are not? I missed this. Sorry. I thought you were just coming up with this on your own. Can you post a link when you get a chance?

If that is the case then, yeah, it is worth the conversation. I think two future second rounders is more likely, but I would take that deal.

At least a couple people were talking about it earlier in the summer:

Man, it would be great if NOLA would take him off our hands...in exchange for some sort of compensation, assets, etc.

I don't think he's worth much, but lets see how desperate NOLA is for a scoring wing lol

I've not seen one reasonable alternative to Hood as our starting SG from the crowd who wants him gone.

JR and Korver's days are numbered. Nwaba was a decent pickup but he's a backup at this point. There are two irrefutable facts here: 1) We gave away one of the best value contracts in the league for Hood; letting him walk and getting nothing for him would be another L on this front office 2) We need to prioritize youth and Hood, at the age of 25, fits perfectly with the average age of our roster.

What's the big hex on this guy, that he underperformed in the postseason??? So did EVERY member of our fuckin' team with the exception of LeBron; there's a reason they were all the subject of a SNL parody and why many basketball fans were seriously debating if we were the worst Finals team of all team.

I'm not going to excuse Hood's decision to not enter a playoff game, but he was thrust into a chaotic pressure-cooker of a situation with one of the league's most inept coaches (whose staff eroded his confidence by fucking with his form) and the league's biggest diva. AT LEAST he showed some life in the Finals, which is more than I can say for Hill or Clarkson, who are each making A LOT more money that we'd project to pay Hood.

Don't overpay the guy, but showing him the door is a bullshit mentality.

A lot depends on whether they think Hill will bounce back next season. If they think he will, then they have three decent wings in Moore, Miller, and Hill. A thin rotation, but workable. If they think Hill's done, then they have two decent wings and need to add a third to avoid having a terrible player in the regular rotation. The most straightforward way for them to do that would be to wave the magic wand of a first round pick on Hill's garbage-ass contract and see what they can turn it into.

So your argument in favor of keeping Hood is he's young and we don't have anyone better?

Wow. I'm so convinced now.

Listen, no one is saying that we should just get rid of him for nothing. So quit with the strawman arguments. We all agree that keeping Hood on a cheap deal makes sense. Or, trading him for assets could also make sense if someone like NOLA has a boner for him.

So, tell me, what about that is unreasonable?

Sexton/Hill/Cedi start. Clarkson/Nwaba/Korver off the bench. It's pretty simple...there's just no place for Hood in the rotation here. Chaining yourself to failed investments is not a smart way to start a rebuild*.

*IMO an underrated part of the 76ers' rebuild was their willingness to cut ties with highly-touted prospects who weren't performing, but that's a story for another day.

Shit. If we could get a first for him we should be all over that !

Yeah, Hood is not starting here. Hill and Sexton are both better options, especially together. Hood will be competing with JR, Korver, Clarkson, and Nwaba for bench minutes.

No, no, no. Go right ahead and derail a thread about something other than the thread title. That’s what we do....:chuckle: :chuckle:

Well, all sign and trade possibilities that bring back a first are also going to bring back a gross multi-year contract, and eating that gross contract is the real price we'd be paying for the first (and that could be worth it depending on the specifics of the gross contract and the quality of the first rounder).

But, they got assets in return for them.

I'll be honest, I don't even remember what they got for them. But I don't think it was anything major. Thought they did a good job cutting their losses and not trying to make failing prospects fit on a roster where there was no clear fit for them. Hit me with a disagree and PM me if I'm wrong though, don't want to derail this thread more than necessary.

Wondering if theres enough minutes for the players is a common discussion in August about an NBA roster. It is usually followed by saying the roster is lacking a player or two by October.

It's entirely possible that Hill starts at PG at the beginning of the season with Korver or Hood starting at shooting guard. Sexton will still be 19 for half of this season and many teams have chosen to ease a young rookie point guard into their role against the second team at first. If Sexton blows the Cavs away and starts from the jump like Dennis Smith Jr., more power to him. However, keeping Hill on the roster doesn't force Sexton to start right away if he isn't ready.

Hood isn't my favorite choice for the Cavs but he is useful and he is a RFA. If he isn't involved in a sign and trade I'd prefer to keep him on a very short contract, maybe even a one and one with a player option.

The roster has the flexibility to start or have guys come off the bench for basically the whole roster except for Kevin Love who is the one lock to start. My concern with Sexton coming in with the second unit is Clarkson is a horrible pairing for a young PG. Clarkson might be the one player who shouldn't even have a shot at starting. Could we get away with benching Clarkson to start the season till Hill is moved?
