Rodney Hood: Won't be missed

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
McCaw is sack
So now that Hood is back the starting and bench unit should look like this.

PG. Hill/Sexton
SG. Hood/Clarkson/Kover
SF. Osman/Nuwaba/Decker
PF. Love/Nance/Preston
C. Whiteside/Zizic/Frye

Uhhh. Whiteside plays for the Heat. Preston isn't on the Cavs 15 man roster. Not sure I'd pencil them in as part of the rotation.

Maybe something more like this?

Depth Chart:
  • PG: George Hill / Collin Sexton / Isiah Taylor
  • SG: JR Smith / Jordan Clarkson / Rodney Hood
  • SF: Cedi Osman / Kyle Korver / David Nwaba
  • PF: Kevin Love / Larry Nance Jr. / Sam Dekker
  • C: Tristan Thompson / Ante Zizic / Channing Frye
But things change JR & Korver are probably gone by New years. Hill probably sticks around until the trading deadline.

I know it’s basketball dead season but the Whiteside shit threw me for a loop.

This season is going to be interesting just to see what direction they move after the first two months.

Yes it will. I know they have to be looking ahead and on the phones a lot to get the best deals they can.
Going to be a long season.

Why is it positive for Cleveland? You only showed why it is positive for Hood.

Short-sighted concept. If he plays positive basketball, it in turn means GOOD things for us. IF he plays like a schmuck that is just jacking up shots to get points, then we have an issue.

Look, I get people don't like Hood. I like things about Hood's game which seem like skills which should work well on this team.

And to the person who said something about not playing well with James. Hood went from a VERY disciplined Utah offense to the havoc known as the Cavalier offense. Needless to say, he didn't adjust.

I like Hood's potential but I think he did himself a big disservice by taking the qualifying offer. With the depth especially at SG that this team currently has, he has little room to screw up this season. With a long term contract the team would be more willing to suffer thru the highs and lows of his inconsistency in hopes he develops to the next level. I just don't see them willing to take those lumps for more than a couple games since he is on the qualifying offer.

If he plays the way he did in the playoffs for more than a handful of game, I could see him getting benched and have to work his way back into the rotation. The older guys will also get priority for playing time over him in hopes we can increase their trade values.

I thought it was in the best interest of both the team and Hood to get him on a long term contract. Less pressure on Hood and more patients for the team. I just don't feel like the pressure to preform for his next contract is going to get the best out of Hood.

Rodney Hood is a slightly longer version of a young Michael Redd. He's a versatile scorer, he has that smooth lefty stroke, and he's been a little banged up in his career. Remember, we tried so hard to pair Redd with James back in the day--and that would've been glorious. Instead, we got ourselves Larry Stinkin' Hughes.

This guy is going to be LeBron's pet project, I can guarantee it. This is the young guy James is going to take under his wing, pour knowledge into, and turn into a better player. Hood is about ready to explode. He tried to do it with Kyrie, and Kyrie rebuffed him because, well, Kyrie is a cocky little twat.

Rodney Hood, if he and LeBron both stay on next year, is going to eventually be an all-star. I promise you.

Not trying to call out thedarkness alone. There are tons of posts like this at the beginning of the thread. I mean Hood has been a major disappointment. Very curious if he gets any amazing offers next year at all. Now that he took the qualifying offer i am not sure how i want him to perform.

For him to get a real good offer next summer, I think he has to win the starting job in camp and show consistency all season. If he has a slump at any point in the season, I have little faith he will be able to work his way out of it. I think the pressure of his next contract and the money he left on the table by taking the qualifying offer could result in him going into a tailspin and being bench the rest of the season.

I just don't think he is a player that will thrive on the qualifying offer.

I don’t mind you calling me out—I haven’t given up yet.

Just a month ago I posted that I’d give him 3 years, $25 million to keep him.

I think he’s a 16-17 point scorer this year who can actually create for himself.

A lot stacked up against him last season. It’s hard to adjust to a LeBron offense anyway, especially when you’re used to getting the ball a little. No camp, no practice...

I was willing to lock him up to a longer deal. I have faith he’s going to restore his trade value this season.

Actually, pressure is exactly what he needs. His real problem isn't a lack of confidence, nerves, or anything like that. It's a lack of defensive effort/intensity, and an apparent fear of contact on the offensive end. Dude needs to feel like he's got to impress the fuck out of everyone.

He needs to start playing like he's afraid of getting benched, not like he's too good to get a little dirty.

I think the Cavs would have done that actually. He wanted 10+ I think. Reported he wanted 9. Pretty rough to turn down 7M per year when he hasn't made that altogether in the NBA yet.

I am curious if he comes back really in shape and stronger. I am not sure he has made his body his priority. I think he may have avoided weights so it wouldn't affect his shot.

I wanted him on team friendly deal because i see a rough road ahead for him. He doesn't quite know where he is at, and he is in real danger of being outplayed by several hustle players on the team. Like if Nwaba hits the same 3 % on higher vaolume this year and is one of the better defenders, what can Rodney supply to compete with that? Is 14ppg with no d better than 10 ppg with great d? It depends, but I don't thihnk so.

Weren't there people saying that he had a bucket at Duke to throw up in before the game? I think it's nerves and anxiety.

I thought the best thing for him was to get him comfortable and secure in his job long term. Locking him down long term and carving out a role for him would have done that.

I guess we will see first hand this season if the pressure will get to him or the pressure will bring out the best in him.

Yeah I think he needs better coping mechanisms to deal with the anxiety. Just throwing him into the fire doesn't work. If it did, the playoffs would have fixed him.

I think if he signed a long term deal, he most likely would have been handed the starting SG spot fairly easily. On the QO, I think he is fighting for a rotation spot. The team has more control over guys like Nwaba and Dekker long term. Cedi basically will lock down the starting SF spot with 30+ minutes now if he plays decently.

I understand that "pressing" may hurt you on the offensive end. I don't buy for a second an argument that taking the pressure off him and telling him to relax is going to make him put forth more effort defensively.

A huge part of defense is busting your ass and putting forth effort. That's where he has fallen short, and he fell short even when under his full rookie contract in Utah when he presumably was relaxed.

Time for him to sack up, or go play in Europe. He may just have a passive type of personality that doesn't respond well to intense competitive pressure, and never will.
