Rodney Hood: Won't be missed

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Agree. You are in competition with the Qualifying offer where you lose the right to trade him, and almost certainly won't resign him after it is up.

If he really sucks and you don't want him at all the QO is ok, but otherwise it really isn't good for the team or for morale etc
You are right on all counts. I think the ball is in his court though. He has an offer on the table and the QO..

Kinda seems like a worst case scenario, but I suppose they could trade him to a playoff team with Korver to I stantly improve scoring. But after past year no one is going to think he can help in the playoffs.

The fact Woj says they explored sign and trades makes me think he will get moved during the season

Patrick McCaw is the last restrict free agent left out there. I wonder if Gilbert decides to use some of the money that was offered to Hood to screw over Golden State alittle. Use the part of the MLE to throw a offer sheet at McCaw in the range of 4-6 million a year.

Worst case scenario would have been an overpay. It would have been nice if he'd have signed a team-friendly deal, but he clearly sees himself as worth more than the Cavs do so that option wasn't available to the Cavs. I'm glad Koby didn't spend the money just because he had some room under this year's cap.

Truth is, Cavs likely are going to be under the cap for awhile, so if we really don't want to lose Hood because he balls out, we'll have as much room to sign him as anyone. I expect he's just going to be the same Rodney Hood he's always been, so this was probably the best we could do.

Yeah, snatching McCaw is going to completely ruin GSW and ultimately lead to their demise :chuckle:

They will have to make a decision with if they want him and pay the 4x luxury tax. He could be a nice addition to this team. 4-6 million is 16-24 million every year in luxury tax for the Warriors.

They don't even need McCaw. He is a towel waver for them. I don't see them even care about him at all.

What is McCaw good at really?

I think he is a good player to develop. He has good length and big game experience. I've read articles that McCaw is seen in their organization as their future replacement for Iggy.

We have a roster spot open and offering him a 3 year 4-6 million per year offer sheet won't hurt us for the future. At worse he becomes trade filler. At best we steal a rotation player for cheap. If they match, you at least make Golden State pay more luxury tax and it could effect what they offer Iggy, Draymond, or Klay.

Also I think it's a good negotiating tactic for the future with restricted free agents. If you take the QO like Hood, we might go out of our way to get someone at your position to take minutes from you. Hood can bet on himself but we will hedge that bet on our end and we won't gift wrap you minutes.

If we offer 4-6M they simply won't match and we end up not hurting them at all. McCaw is not the player that will make them step into the luxury tax.

It's about us much more than them and whether you think McCaw is worth 6M.

6 million is barely anything in the NBA anymore. I'd be happier giving him 4 or 5 million but I think at 6 million it's worth the risk. If Hood isn't part of our future, bring in another SG/SF will help with our depth. Mccaw could backup Cedi at SF. If he becomes a solid rotation player for us, that's out playing a 6 million dollar contract in today's NBA.

Fair enough.

At this point i'd rather try to clear more cap space and absorb bad contracts for picks and hopefully hit the jackpot. Heck, a lot of early and mid 2nd round picks will net you a a player with a better ceiling and perhaps even a better floor.

He just doesn't interest me right now. I think his ceiling is pretty capped.

Screwing over Golden State is not a priority for Dan or the Cavs. That is no longer our battle as of the moment LeBron decided to leave for the Lakers. It's his battle. Let GM LBJ+Magic go steal Pat McCaw if it's such a blow to GS, lol.

I can report 0 interest in Pat McCaw. They're much higher on Nwaba as the same type of player. The Cavs are "done" in free agency barring something unforseen happening.

The next step for the Cavs is to see what this team really looks like after 20-30 games with Love as the #1 guy and Sexton getting big minutes. Hood will have a chance to be a big scoring option for us. If they seem frisky enough to battle for the 8 seed, maybe we go after it and see what happens. If they quickly fall out of contention and are just bad, I expect them to completely re-visit their current stance on trading Love and Korver and much more priority placed on the teams youth movement, though that is important to us no matter what.
