Rodney Hood: Won't be missed

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If he took the QO then I'd fully expect the Cavs to shop him. Not sure what the track record is of guys re-signing the summer following taking a QO, but I doubt it's very high. They'd need to rehab his trade value in the first half of the season if that were to happen.

If he takes the QO Hood would have to approve the trade, plus the team getting him would not have bird rights. If he signed the QO he is mostly likely here, unless a playoff team wants to add him as a one year rental. To me I wonder if we offer him a 1 year deal with a player option for 6-8MM, we then get a tradechip and can trade his bird rights.

Why wouldn't he approve a team though? he would approve anything at this point, no?

It really seems to me like New Orleans will be our future trade partner.

Depends on where we wanted to send him, and the role he would have there. If it was a team over the cap, he would not be able to sign there next year for more then the MLE. Most likely a team that was in the playoff hunt that thought he would be good to add off the bench would be someone who would want him. There is a chance he could get less mins or reduced even more to a role player role, which would make even harder to get a pay day the next year.

The move is to get him on a really cheap multi year deal and hopefully he has a good year. Then he could potentially be traded with a large expiring for someone who is actually good.

Because all Bird Rights are lost if he does. If he refuses to be traded then the Cavs retain Bird Rights and would be able to facilitate a larger salary via a S&T. Largely depends on how you view market for the next season if you're Hood or his agent.

We are getting close to where he will be a restricted free agent again next year. They have to decide within a month. 3 year 8M per

Thought it would be worked out one way or another by now.

One aspect with the Cavaliers organization that is tried and true? When it comes to being a restricted free agent; you don't want to be one. Just in recent memory I recall Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao. JR Smith was one as well, wasn't he? We tend to draw a line firmly in the ground and rarely move off of it. Hood will be signed during training camp or in the preseason if past history repeats itself.

It will get done but from a continuity point of view of getting a new team playing together, I would like it done more sooner than later.

Yeah but some of those guys got paid above market in the end without getting an offer at all. We don't want to do that with Hood. We don't need another JR or TT contract.

Question is, what is fair? Dante Exum just got 10 million and he hasn't done a whole lot of anything. And JR? His talent alone could warrant the pay-day but his lack of focus and antics have made the deal look horrendously awful.

I like Hood unlike most folks who seem to be talking on this thread. He isn't a star but he does a lot of things well and I love his length. This is a chance for him to showcase he can take the next step in this league. I thought he teased some of that in Utah last season. When he came here, he had zero idea how to play off LeBron.

I wouldn't be thrilled about paying Exum 10M/year, but it's important to note that he's getting paid for his potential to continue improving over the next few years. He may not be worth 10M this season, but it's not hard to envision a scenario where he's worth 10M or more by the end of his contract.

Hood may be the better player right now, but his career arc seems to have leveled off. At best it seems like he'll be a good microwave bench scorer going forward...that could make him a useful rotation player for a contender, but for a rebuilding team like the Cavs he doesn't have enough upside to merit a significant long-term investment.

What do you think is fair? He just doesn't do a lot of winning things except score and he seems to have trouble doing that under pressure. I really don't think he is worth more than MLE money.

You dont burn money on a contract you dont need. Cavs can afford to let another team define his value and guess what. That's not a big number.. our offer is what it is. Good move by the FO...

Agree. You are in competition with the Qualifying offer where you lose the right to trade him, and almost certainly won't resign him after it is up.

If he really sucks and you don't want him at all the QO is ok, but otherwise it really isn't good for the team or for morale etc
