Rumor: Nets, Nuggets, Cavs were CLOSE to 3-way deal last week (Devin Harris to Cavs?)

Re: Rumor: Nets, Nuggets, Cavs were CLOSE to 3-way deal last week (Devin Harris to Ca

Bucher was just on ESPN New York...

His comment was what happens to the Knicks if they sign Melo to a max with Amare and there is a hard cap??? They will be screwed...

So my question if if this happens then obviously the Heat would be in the same boat what would happen to these teams that are capped out on two or three players...

I think this may be one of the reasons why Dan Gilbert gauranteed the Cavs would win a championship before the Heat. I feel as if the Heat cannot win a championship with what they currently have. And if the CBA changes to a hard cap, then how are they going to improve the team? They will be stuck for 6 years with just the big 3 and nothing more. Meanwhile, Dan Gilbert is wealthy, competitve, aggressive, is collecting alot of draft picks, and has alot of cap space.

Even if there is a hard cap and other provisions, there will be some rules grandfathered in to help teams that already have a lot of money committed.

I think a lot of people are going to be disapointed in this round of CBA negotiations. Stern LOVES the focus on big markets and the super teams. They are great for ratings. This isn't the NFL where parity is part of the package - this is much more MLB where big markets and stars make the money. And Stern is as committed to helping that come through as anyone.

Meanwhile, Dan Gilbert is wealthy

A hard cap completely negates that advantage as his willingness to spend is rendered worthless in a hard cap league. If anything it gives an advantage to those teams that have superior front office personnel, and Chris Grant isn't exactly Pat Riley in that department last I checked.

I have seen alot of people get excited about a franchise tag, but if they do it anything like the NFL (which they should) then franchised players automatically get a 20% raise on top of the previous season's salary for the upcoming year.

In a hard cap league, it would make that tag financially crippling to a team's salary cap if you have to give yearly 20% raises to a max player. That is why the NFL's works, because without that deterrent it would be essentially career slavery to the player if a team could just keep franchising a player even if he didn't want to play there. It is only meant to be a temporary measure though, because the financial impact becomes too great if you have to give a guy making 20 million a year 20% raises every year while at the same time staying under the cap.

Just something to think about for all those who think a hard cap and franchise tag will somehow be a panacea to all the leagues current ills.

A hard cap helps Miami more than it hurts them. They already have their three studs and they're under the cap right now. They can keep surrounding them with draft picks, undrafted free agents, and minimum salary vets and remain a great team. But, every other team in the nba would have trouble finding superstars. Dallas, the Celtics, Spurs, the Lakers, and the Magic are all way over the cap. Those teams would be in trouble. And the fact that Dan Gilbert is "wealthy" would mean nothing in a hard cap nba. Be careful what you wish for. A hard cap in the nba could equal 7 championships for the Heat.

Am I the only one who thinks Felton for Billups is not a wash? For one, Billups is making TWICE as much money. Two, I'm not even close to convinced he will be able to play the PG role of D'Antoni the way it needs to be played. And third, he's a lot older. Felton would be a guy you could re-sign after his deal is up, or extend him in the middle of his contract. With Billups, it's this year and next year and then it's over. So not a wash imo.

Also, the threat of a franchise tag is real, but so is the threat of a hard cap. If the league gets hard capped, and the Knicks just traded away their young talent (even if we just consider Gallo and Mozgov) and give nearly all of their cap space to two guys with no way of going over the cap..they're far more screwed than if they had simply never made the deal for Anthony in the first place. Then, you add Billups and his 14 million next year on to that, and they have absolutely no shot at adding anything in the off-season.

Personally, I think the Knicks should keep this team and simply add to it in the off-season. If I were them, I'd go get Marc Gasol to play next to Amare and re-sign Chandler. I think that would ultimately be a better team than Amare+Melo with no Felton, Chandler, or Gallo.

Dont believe that either amare or melo are winners. Let the Knicks have both.

Billups would be off the books when CP3 and D-Will are free agents... Chandler is gone no matter what... They are trying to set-up another big 3...

Broussard is officially an idiot... He was on the Michael Kay show and basically claimed Amare is a Knick because of Isiah, only reason why Joe Johnson thought about the Knicks was Isiah and Melo to NYK is by Isiah...
Michael Kay just went off saying Broussard is full of it... Ha...

Who cares who comes off the books two years from now. The salary cap is up THIS YEAR. If you use all of your cap space on two guys and in the process let ALL of your young talent go, there is no where to go. Forget Williams and Chris Paul because they aren't going to have the cap space to ever dream about sigining one of the two. Their only shot at being a title contender is to keep the majority of these guys and then add to it without trading anything.
