Rumor: Paul Pierce to Cavs

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Guys don't opt out of $10 million to make $1 million in Miami. He made money, but not LeBron money.

The guy said he's financially set for life and he doesn't need the money, so I trust that that's not hot air. He even took it a step further by saying he'd just retire if he's sent to a rebuilding team..... Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, only Shawn Marion knows. Whether he does or doesn't, the Cavs want that pick, but it'd be a home run deal if Marion decided to be a Cavalier.

Yeah, if he does retire, oh well, we get the pic for free (well, Gibert does anyways)... or we can trade him to a contender during the season.

Marion wouldn't seem likely to opt out but there's likely a number that Marion could be bought out at something like 5-6m. We get Dallas to potentially agree to send us some money to bankroll the opt in/buyout scenario should it occur. Anyways, I'd take him cause he's still a solid player and I hope he would want to play here.

Point is, I'd say there's like a 5% chance of him opting out, but there's probably a pretty good chance of him attempting to leverage a buyout if he gets sent here. I'm guessing our management will already have some idea what this number is before we pull the trigger on a trade(and if we want to be amenable to him)

We might be just short on cap room (at least according to hoopshype).

Edit: Their combined salaries are $24.62. The Cavs should have ~26 mil. So I guess it would work.

You aren't factoring in the cap hold of tendering Ellington(5.2m) and the cap holds of our picks(approx 6.7m). I have us something like 15-16m under until we deal with ellington. Also we could get more money if Speights opts out and is renounced(I think roughly 4m once his salary is offset by a min cap hold)

Ah, yeah, didn't think about the draft. I think Speights opts in.

If marion knows there is a deal out there to send him to a rebuilding team, he'll opt out instead.

They just agree in principle and submit it on July 8th.

both trades are really unlikely. They can't be formally agreed to until July 8th or it's a violation of the CBA.

For the boston trade to work, we have to pick guys boston wants and they have to not use their buyout on Pierce, which puts them on the hook for $16 million instead of $5 million and Pierce could turnaround and decide to retire, where he gets the full $16 million.

For the Dallas trade to work, we have to pick a guy they want, they have to pick a guy we want, and Marion has to not decide to opt out knowing he's coming here when he could opt out and ring chase in a few cities for somewhere between the league minimum, the mini MLE or even the full MLE.

Marion has earned $125 million, which is actually more than LeBron has earned on the court ($110 million). The difference between his contract ($9.3 million) and a league minimum contract ($1.4 million) is about $8 million . I don't think he needs the money.

Are we really going to take a player under contract overseas on faith that Marion doesn't opt out?

Are you going to assume that because an athlete made a lot of money, he still has all/most of it?

You're reaching hard. LeBron has earned nearly 3x what Marion has via endorsements. So he's earned $125 million. After the taxman, agents, living luxurious for 15 years, houses, boats, cars. That 125 quickly becomes < 30. 8 million is a huge chunk of change for him.

These type of draft day agreement trades happen all the time. It's not like we'd be breaking new ground.

This trade: http://www.nba.com/pacers/news/pacers_trades_release_080709.html

Was done on draft night and announced in July. They couldn't attend rookie camp because the trade wasn't official.

That's not issue, the issue is are we going to take a guy who can't play here this year on the assumption he doesn't have a substantial amount of money. Not every athlete blows through all of their money as fast as they earn it.

Do you think Donald Trump would turn his back on an 8 million difference in a contract? He's pretty well set, but I'm sure he wouldn't give up that kind of money.

I clearly said on court earnings. You are reaching to assume he's blown through most of his money.
