Re: Shaq having surgery on thumb (pg 21)

wow recover soon big guy

go cavs !

Re: Shaq having surgery on thumb (pg 21)

Then he'll be back end of April. Shouldn't be a problem for the match-up with Orlando and LA.
Next to that, he should be able to maintain his conditioning. He still can bike, run and do drills without the ball I suppose?

Re: Shaq having surgery on thumb (pg 21)

Guess we'll start calling him .."The Big Thumb"..

Re: Shaq having surgery on thumb (pg 21)

Was hoping for six weeks recovery. To give him some time to get acclimated into the offense. Oh well.

Re: Shaq having surgery on thumb (pg 21)

8 weeks means he would be back for the entire second-round playoff series. That may give him a bit of floor time to get acclimated. (Although frankly if we're playing someone like Atlanta I wouldn't really want to see him too much).

Re: Shaq having surgery on thumb (pg 21)

I'm only on pg 28, so sorry if this has been said, but I had to say this before I forgot:

One good thing I see is that when we play Orlando in April, we get 48 minutes of practicing how to beat their ass when Shaq is in foul trouble. That's going to happen in at least 2 games in the playoffs.

Re: Shaq had successful surgery on thumb - out 8 weeks (post #586)

Could be worse. In a way we are fortunate it happened now, would have been a disaster for example if this happened in the 1st round or later in the season.

A little adversity sometimes only makes you stronger.

Shaq's surgery 'successful', Out 8 Weeks
by John Bena (aka CavsBlogger) on Mar 1, 2010 9:53 AM CST in Cavaliers in the News 1 comment

Cavaliers center Shaquille O'Neal had successful surgery to repair his right thumb injury this morning at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. The surgery was performed by Dr. Thomas Graham, Chief of the National Hand Center and attended by Cavaliers Head Team Physician Dr. Richard Parker from The Cleveland Clinic. O’Neal will now undergo a period of rest, treatment and rehabilitation for his right thumb. His return to play is currently estimated to be approximately eight weeks.

That would mean that Shaq is essentially out the rest of the regular season and likely the first round of the playoffs. This isn't concerning IF, and that is a big IF, Shaq stays in shape. It is his thumb, afterall, which means his physical conditioning should remain high - if he takes it seriously.

An in-shape Shaq can help the Cavaliers in the playoffs, even after the lay-off. An out-of-shape Shaq will hurt the Cavs.

good to hear surgery went okay, get better soon big fella, I already miss ya.

Absolutely Right.

I am thanking God that this didnt happen later in the season.. that would have killed us.

I doubt shaq will need much time to get back into the offense because he does his own thing.
It is not Jamison we are talking about or anything. All shaq does no matter what team or offense he is on is take the ball, do his move, and score. He's been doing that since he was a teenager. :chuckles:
He will be fine as soon as he gets back.

My only worry is that he doesn't be an idiot like Mo, and continues to exercise and run while he is recovering. Hell, he could even practice free throws, don't need your thumb much for that!:D

Get Well Soon Shaq Daddy

Orlando should go for the 8th seed now

Shaquille O'Neal's thumb surgery successful, Cleveland Cavaliers expect him to miss 8 weeks

CLEVELAND -- Shaquille O'Neal is out of surgery and it was successful, which is the good news. The bad news is that the procedure Dr. Thomas Graham and Cavs team physician Dr. Richard Parker performed Monday morning in Baltimore on O'Neal's right thumb ended his regular season.

In announcing that O'Neal was out of surgery, the Cavaliers finally put a timetable on O'Neal's recovery. The team expects him to miss approximately eight weeks. That two-month window would likely knock O'Neal out of the first round of the playoffs as well as the 22 remaining games in the season.

"The doctors were very pleased with the surgery this morning," Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry said in statement. "He will be in a splint for the next two weeks. From there he starts the process of physical therapy so that he can be at full strength and back on the court during the playoffs."

The Cavs will be shorthanded at center for likely the next three weeks, which is when Zydrunas Ilgauskas can re-sign if he chooses to do that. In the meantime, the Cavs will start Anderson Varejao and rely on Leon Powe and J.J. Hickson for minutes at center.

Last season the team dealt with a broken leg to starter Ben Wallace and this year have dealt with O'Neal being out with a shoulder injury, Mo Williams missing a month with a shoulder injury and Delonte West missing three weeks with a broken finger and still have the best record in the league.

The belief if O'Neal would be back in the event of a late-round meeting with the Orlando Magic, the team the Cavs traded for O'Neal to match up with.

"Our guys have done a very good job of stepping up this season," Ferry said. "We are confident they will do the same in this situation...We are fortunate to have some depth in our front court that can keep us moving forward while Shaq recovers and returns to play for the post season."

I'm just hoping that Shaq stays in shape physically because he won't have much time to work off the fat if he gains a bunch of weight while out... No time for that. Lean meats and vegetables for the big man...
