Shumpert trade ideas

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm including Korver at $5M a year in my calculation. With Rudy at $20M/year, Korver at $5M/year, and Frye at $8M/year, we are still over the tax next year by the same amount as we are this year, and less than we were last year.

I think the goal is for us to pay significantly less luxury tax next year. Gilbert is not going to pay Rudy Gay 20 million. No way.

Windhorst said it best: The Cavs FO has a directive: if there is a problem, figure it out without "throw money at it" being the answer.

The Cavs are not permanently going to stay this far in the tax. The money hit is absurd. Rudy Gay is the definition of "throw money at it to fix it".

The Korver move was a good move where we wont have to "throw money at it to fix it". We saved money this year, we can probably keep him, and save a nice chunk for next year as well.

I personally don't think Rudy is worth discussing for that reason.

If somebody else went down with an injury, maybe the checkbook opens back up, but as of right now....I don't see it.

To add to this, it makes even less monetary sense with a title on the books.

I could see Gilbert really pushing the envelope chasing that elusive ring.....now that he has it, Griffin's directive is to make moves like the past one. Where we get really creative shuffling money and pieces and hopefully net a player a bit better than what we had previously.

His directive is just not to go find another guy who costs us $20 million a year. It's just an unnecessary expenditure that isn't worth the money IMO.

I was following you up until here -- Dudley + Barbosa will cost more on the cap than Gay. Dudley and Barbosa are both older than Gay, and are both poorer defenders than Gay. We have enough Dudley type players in Korver/Frye/Love.

Dudley + Barbosa would cost more on the cap only for this year. Rudy Gay would get around twice of what Dudley + Barbosa are getting, next off season while Dudley would have 2 more years left in his contract and Barbosa would have 1 more year.

Also, no, Rudy isn't a better defender than Jared Dudley. Dudley is a good defender. He isn't as athletic as Rudy Gay but he is a far more smarter player defensively. I haven't watched him for the Suns a lot this season but he was a good PnR defender for Wizards last season and he has the size to be able to deal against the wings when they post-up. Can play at 3/4 at ease.

More importantly, he is a player who doesn't need ball in his hands to make an impact. He is a very good shooter from beyond the arc. If needed, he could also take a dribble or two and attack the hoop. So, isn't exactly a James Jones in that aspect. He is a willing passer and moves the ball well. He fits in our offense well.

Why are you guys so concerned with Dan Gilbert's wallet? Truly confuses me. Multi-billionaire who just saw the value of his team rise dramatically, and we're concerned about his luxury tax bill?

Whatever. Everyone has their limit, but I really never want to hear "All In" again. "All In Up To A Certain Point" is a little closer to the truth.

Who's concerned about his wallet?

People are just making points based off reports that means Rudy Gay is probably out of the question. They aren't making the points to save Dan Gilbert money...they are trying to be realistic based on what we've been told.

Value of the team is only worth something if he decides to sell it. What happens to the value of this team in 5 years? Gulp....

Gilbert is more "All In" than any other owner in the NBA. It's not like he is going around preaching "Strength in Numbers" after blowing up a 73 win team for 1 player.

Damn Y'all really tryna get rid of shump

He's real good friends with the King so I don't know

That's not true.

"The money hit is absurd."

"It's just an unnecessary expenditure that isn't worth the money IMO."

A championship means higher ticket prices, more merchandise sold, more national TV exposure, more sponsors.

So, no I don't agree that Gilbert only sees value from a title if he sells the team. After all, why is the team more valuable just because it has a championship, if not for its ability to generate revenue?

Yeah, the money hit IS absurd.

If Gilbert wanted to pay it, I wouldn't care at all. But we know for a FACT that we are not adding that type of salary. That's my point.

And I really don't think you can even blame Gilbert and say he's not "all-in". Our payroll is gigantic and locked in at gigantic numbers for multiple years.

We aren't always going to have LeBron. Something about LeBron is that no matter what, if you are willing to spend enough money, you can make a team with LeBron a legitimate contender. Even the Mo/Delonte/Jamison/Shaq teams could have probably won at least one title in the right year.

After LeBron, the Front Office will have to be able to reign in how they acquire and how much they pay certain players if we want to eventually contend. I'm not even saying they have to fall out of the tax, but falling out of the repeaters tax at the max level , thats not a bad goal.

We don't know that for a fact. That's just an asshumption at this point and everything hinges on how long LeBron decides to play and what kind of a role he may have with this team after he retires, if any, as you have alluded to.

I wouldn't doubt that Gilbert's pockets are so deep that he could take the tax hit to make his pockets and the city and surrounding businesses pockets that much deeper - maximizing LeBron's tenure here. Win another championship or 2 and those tax hits are like pissing in the ocean.

You could hypothesize that breaking down AVs TPE may be an indication that they won't be adding any larger contracts of Gay's size, but we shall see.

If Shump can actually play consistently I think we'll be OK and we could do without Gay.

We still need that PG / front court player.

CAVS Receive: Tony Allen, Brandon Wright, Deyonta Davis

MEMPHIS Receives: Iman Shumpert, Jordan McRae, BirdMan, Draft Pick, Cash Consideration for BirdMan

This trade isn't flashy and is totally about getting bigger and tougher. With lots of people talking about getting offensive players, I thought I'd change it up with the focous on defense. We would probably have to throw in some kind of draft pick to sweeten the deal (Hopfully not a 1st rounder) and cash considerations to Memphis to take on BirdMan so we can keep an open roaster spot for a back up point guard (free agent)

Memphis might bite because Tony Allen is 35 and on the last year of his contract and Brandon Wright hasn't been playing because of an injury but is due back soon, same goes for Deyonta Davis.

We are not trading our best wing defender who is not only having a great season, but is also on a reasonable contract and actually young.
