But the thing is what role would Gay play? would he be fine with 25mpg 12ppg and Defend Hard role? He is mostly a Scorer.. not sure if the Role we would need from him is what he can and wants to play..
Griffin said he wants playmakers. I'll trust Griffin.
I actually think Gay would fit in perfectly. He is basically a poor-man's Lebron, skill-set wise. Which means a few things:
1.) When LBJ is off the court (10 MPG), he can play LBJs role, which means that we can keep using all the sets that we use when LBJ is in the game. One of the reasons we get blown out when LBJ is off the court, is that the rest of the team is built around LBJ's talents. Having somebody who can approximate that (of course not as well), will keep our continuity while LBJ rests.
2.) He can defend Durant. If there is one biggest weakness I think we have against GS right now, it is "Who defends Durant"? LBJ is the best Durant defender in the game, but he can't do it for 40 minutes (and we don't want him to). Shumpert/Smith are our other elite perimeter defenders, but they are too small for Durant. Richard Jefferson is old and has lost a step. Tristan Thompson is an ok perimeter defender, but it's a liability, and you want him on Green for PnRs.
Gay is an above average defender -- moreover, his optimal defensive assignment would be a guy like Durant.
3.) Gay's a better 3PT shooter than Shumpert.
4.) We can bully-ball GS with Gay in the lineup. Imagine KI/Gay/LBJ/Love/Thompson type lineups. Curry is their best offensive weapon still, and he's fairly neutralized here, because there is nobody he can guard. We run KI/LBJ pick and rolls all day, either forcing Curry on LBJ, or forcing Curry to fight high through LBJ on screens to pick up Irving. This lineup also destroys GS on the glass. Gay/LBJ/Love/Thompson are all + rebounders at their positions.
Knight also would not be happy with 10-20 Minutes we could give him.. he also does not defend..
This is silly...
1.) Right now he's getting 22.3 MPG for a team that is terrible. So I don't think he has a lot of leverage there.
2.) He's going to get 25-30 MPG here. Anybody who comes here in a trade will get Shumpert's minutes (currently 24 MPG). Richard Jefferson is currently getting (19.2 MPG) despite playing at below a replacement player level. DeAndre Liggins has played 21 MPG since Smith got hurt. LBJ/KI/Love are all playing more minutes than we want them to in the regular season.
The Cavs are not deep, and minutes are not a problem for anybody.
Danilo is just more offense and meh defense..
I doubt that one will happen, but it fits the type of trade we want.
I think we will defend GS on scheme, more than individual defenders, which is why I think we continue to look for offense. Who cares if you have Shumpert on the floor, if you also have Jefferson on the floor? They will just ignore shumpert and go after Jefferson. In a seven game series, defensive scheme is going to matter a lot.
Ibaka would be nice but we severly lose in perimeter Defense we would basically have to desperatly add another perimeter defender. Ibaka is a nice safety Net but that does not prevent Steph or Klay from taking Threes..
Ibaka is like the best perimeter defending big in the NBA.
Wait, why do you want to put Ibaka on Steph Curry?
Also why trade for Players who will be only rentals? Shump is long and safe for 3 years.
Because we'd be trading for a better player. This has been explained like a million times on this board.
