Shumpert trade ideas

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Shumpert has already run out of "fool me's"

Nice game tonight but if theres a deal out there that makes sense, I'm ok with moving him.
Shumpert as a player and his contract combined makes a hard situation if you want equal value back.

I don't think we'll find a better option than him only making 10 mil

Idc what stats say I don't think he's played as bad as ppl think. Inconsistent but when he's on his hard to defend. He has a solid 1 2 dribblethat gets him past his man basically every time

Just wish he ran pick and rolls better

Suddenly starting Shumpert today after the Griffin comments has to be an indication that Shumpert is on the table though, right?

No quite, It was done to get more looks for him and his confidence back. If it was showcasing him doing it to the Kings was the right move if you all want Gay.

The two main issues with trading Shump are

a)
Disrupting Chemistry and continuity. He was a heavy minute Player for 2 years.

b)
Do we really find a clear upgrade? For the year he still shoots 38% From Three and while inconistent still is right on his Career Defensive BPM. When he locks in on defense he still is an elite defender. Do we really want to give up a guy who has proven he can shut Curry or Klay down?

Oh and he is still only 26 and under the new CBA(get used to it people.. Starter caliber guys get 20m from now on and stars 30+m) his 10m are actually pretty cheap..

If a deal came along that got us a clear upgrade of course we have to at least consider it really well...

But tbh Why should someone gift us a clear upgrade?

As others i am not borderline obsessed with finding a Tall Wing to guard KD at all costs.. Our Strategy is clear: Shut Steph and Klay down(we have proven we can do that)..let KD get 35.. we still likley win 4/7...

So besides Ideas like Rudy Gay... what would you guys want for Shump?

To wafer on Evans by 10% (though I still don't think I'd take him). He looked terrific in that 29 point explosion yesterday. At this moment at least, the knee is there.

Still would really worry about the knee though - also is still a crap defender.

Shumpert's contract is awesome - that's why I think you can get a high quality player for him.

Why wouldn't Sacramento want Shumpert signed at $10M/year for the next three years, instead of Rudy Gay who is leaving in three months anyway?

Brandon Knight clearly doesn't work alongside Eric Bledsoe and Warren -- and alongside those two you will need a defensive SG who doesn't need the ball in his hands... I think a Shumpert for Knight swap also makes sense (the Knight contract is also quite good, which is the major thing in the way).

The same argument comes up for Danilo Gallinari. His name hasn't come up as much, but he is probably gone after 3 months. I think it would be too expensive for us though (would blow up the tax by like $35M), so probably unlikely.

Serge Ibaka might be gone from Orlando in 3 months too?

I'm lukewarm on Tyreke Evans, or Deron Williams, but they are certainly gettable.

We're in a good situation where we don't have to throw the Shump contract away. We're not desparate -- but there are really good players out there on bad contracts (for the team), so we'd be crazy not to think about a swap.

But the thing is what role would Gay play? would he be fine with 25mpg 12ppg and Defend Hard role? He is mostly a Scorer.. not sure if the Role we would need from him is what he can and wants to play..

Knight also would not be happy with 10-20 Minutes we could give him.. he also does not defend..

Danilo is just more offense and meh defense..

Ibaka would be nice but we severly lose in perimeter Defense we would basically have to desperatly add another perimeter defender. Ibaka is a nice safety Net but that does not prevent Steph or Klay from taking Threes..

Also why trade for Players who will be only rentals? Shump is long and safe for 3 years.

Griffin said he wants playmakers. I'll trust Griffin.

I actually think Gay would fit in perfectly. He is basically a poor-man's Lebron, skill-set wise. Which means a few things:

1.) When LBJ is off the court (10 MPG), he can play LBJs role, which means that we can keep using all the sets that we use when LBJ is in the game. One of the reasons we get blown out when LBJ is off the court, is that the rest of the team is built around LBJ's talents. Having somebody who can approximate that (of course not as well), will keep our continuity while LBJ rests.

2.) He can defend Durant. If there is one biggest weakness I think we have against GS right now, it is "Who defends Durant"? LBJ is the best Durant defender in the game, but he can't do it for 40 minutes (and we don't want him to). Shumpert/Smith are our other elite perimeter defenders, but they are too small for Durant. Richard Jefferson is old and has lost a step. Tristan Thompson is an ok perimeter defender, but it's a liability, and you want him on Green for PnRs.

Gay is an above average defender -- moreover, his optimal defensive assignment would be a guy like Durant.

3.) Gay's a better 3PT shooter than Shumpert.

4.) We can bully-ball GS with Gay in the lineup. Imagine KI/Gay/LBJ/Love/Thompson type lineups. Curry is their best offensive weapon still, and he's fairly neutralized here, because there is nobody he can guard. We run KI/LBJ pick and rolls all day, either forcing Curry on LBJ, or forcing Curry to fight high through LBJ on screens to pick up Irving. This lineup also destroys GS on the glass. Gay/LBJ/Love/Thompson are all + rebounders at their positions.

Knight also would not be happy with 10-20 Minutes we could give him.. he also does not defend..

This is silly...

1.) Right now he's getting 22.3 MPG for a team that is terrible. So I don't think he has a lot of leverage there.

2.) He's going to get 25-30 MPG here. Anybody who comes here in a trade will get Shumpert's minutes (currently 24 MPG). Richard Jefferson is currently getting (19.2 MPG) despite playing at below a replacement player level. DeAndre Liggins has played 21 MPG since Smith got hurt. LBJ/KI/Love are all playing more minutes than we want them to in the regular season.

The Cavs are not deep, and minutes are not a problem for anybody.

Danilo is just more offense and meh defense..

I doubt that one will happen, but it fits the type of trade we want.

I think we will defend GS on scheme, more than individual defenders, which is why I think we continue to look for offense. Who cares if you have Shumpert on the floor, if you also have Jefferson on the floor? They will just ignore shumpert and go after Jefferson. In a seven game series, defensive scheme is going to matter a lot.

Ibaka would be nice but we severly lose in perimeter Defense we would basically have to desperatly add another perimeter defender. Ibaka is a nice safety Net but that does not prevent Steph or Klay from taking Threes..

Ibaka is like the best perimeter defending big in the NBA.

Wait, why do you want to put Ibaka on Steph Curry?

Because we'd be trading for a better player. This has been explained like a million times on this board.

Not sure why they'd do it, but I'd love to flip Shump for Jeremy Lin if the Nets would do it. Good defender and good size at PG. Can guard both guard spots pretty effectively. Perfect to run the second unit.

Again, I doubt Brooklyn would do this. Just looking for some guys in Shump's salary range.

I just don't see Rudy Gay "fitting" in here.

Rudy needs the ball in his hands. He isn't that good playing off the ball. He would give us some athleticism and scoring but thats about it, really. His defense has always been below par and he isn't a playmaker to get others involved. His best attribute is scoring, which mostly comes from ISOs and PnR. I don't see him having the ball enough to do that. In the end, we have to remember that there is only one ball and we already have two guys who like to handle the ball a lot and in Love, another guy who you need to give some post-touches and all.

Adding Rudy Gay to that equation could hinder the dynamic we have built till now. He is one of those classic "Good stats in bad team!" player. He is a decentish/good player. Just not the right player for us. Also, the idea of having a wing who can slow down KD, well, Rudy Gay ain't doing that.

Still, I would have been ok with getting him if he had a longer contract. But with his contract ending this season, and teams offering crazy money, I am very skeptical going for him because there's a good chance someone might offer him 20+ Million contract and I can't see us matching it considering how deep we are already in luxury tax. So trading Shump for what could be a rental-Rudy Gay isn't a good deal.

If we are trading Shump, it should be for a defensive wing or a good 3&D guy. The ones we should be looking for are PJ Tucker, Jared Dudley and Thabo Sefolosha. The ideal trade would be to get Jared Dudley + Leandro Barbosa for Shump and Birdman/McRae. We solve two of our issues. Meanwhile, Phoenix get a relatively young wing who would still be good when the likes of Booker, Chriss and Bender etc hit their peak.

Jeremy Lin is an excellent idea. But he has been injured this year for quite a while now.

I was following you up until here -- Dudley + Barbosa will cost more on the cap than Gay. Dudley and Barbosa are both older than Gay, and are both poorer defenders than Gay. We have enough Dudley type players in Korver/Frye/Love.

Maybe part of starting Shump was to jump start the offense more. I do find it ironic though it came when we played Sac too. Coincidence? Probably. But still too funny.
