So long, David Griffin

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Durant signed for the full max and Green signed the best contract he could get. Nobody on that team took less, they signed for as much money as they possibly could get. Durant even forced a 15% trade kicker into his contract.

A team just signed Harrison Barnes to a max offer sheet this summer. Sorry, I'm just not gonna buy that Green couldn't have, quite easily, found a team to give him a full max.

Yes they did...to a 4 year contract. Green got a 5 year deal out of the Warriors for more money than he could get on the open market.

The Warriors had already signed Durant, the deal for Green had nothing to do with being a great sport and taking less money. No matter how you slice it they were going to be in the luxury tax.

but I guess you could just read what their beat reporter had to say on the matter.
"Green was worth whatever he could get and Warriors management rewarded him exactly as Lacob and Myers promised."

Green also comes with alot of baggage. His temperment on the court gets him in trouble. Some teams will not put up with that kinda bullshit.

I love how we keep dancing around the idea of how much Draymond Green taking less money helped them get Durant. He's hated + no one wants to admit maybe LeBron taking less than the absolute max isn't a totally insane request, because hey, your chief rival did it and look how much it helped them.

If Draymond Green took what he was worth, either Livingston or Iguodala wouldn't be on that team this year.

But Draymond isn't the best player on his team, much less the best player in the league. KD took every dime he could, including his trade kicker I believe. And we'll see how generous Steph is when he can get $$$ this summer.

You're the only person I've ever heard display this narrative about the Green contract. No story or reported or even Draymond himself has ever talked about Draymonds contract as a monetary sacrifice to win.

He was a restricted free agent, Golden State was going to match any offer, teams weren't willing to tie up all that cap space for 3 days at the start for free agency on a player they had no chance on, and Greens intentions to return to the Warriors were very clear.

Furthermore, they did not get Durant thanks to the 1 million/year they saved off of Greens cap hit. They were fortunate that Steph had bum ankles, signed to a dirt cheap contract , and then exploded into a 2 time MVP and was lucky enough to avoid ankle problems. Having Curry at 11m a year is the reason they were able to get KD.

There comes a point where it makes sense for even Dan Gilbert to sell the team in order to realize the James-inflated valuation while it still has him under contract.

Love Bron but he's being whiny. This roster (which he had a hand in constructing) isn't exactly the easiest to build around. A starting PG (Kyrie) thats not a floor general/playmaker and a big (Love) who doesn't have much of an impact on team defense puts serious pressure on the FO to fill out these deficiencies between the 4th and 10th roster spots.

Throw in the fact that those two make a combined 40 mil means there's not much capspace to work with. Throw in the fact that he keeps destroying management's leverage during contract negotiations. Money that could have been saved towards another talent on the roster. Why wasn't he more concerned when we let Delly and others go to pay his guys. Now it's come out that we're bleeding money on the balance sheet.

We love you lebron but time to stfu and win us that second title. You aren't exactly the easiest to appease.

Taking the Melo drama out for a minute, could Griff instead be looking at moving to add depth (c and PG) rather than gutting the roster to get Carmelo?
I'm starting to think the Melo drama could be a good smoke screen to see what incremental moves he can make to solidify the roster.

I'm pretty sure both are true.

Griffin is definitely keeping his hand on the pulse of the Carmelo situation, it would be irresponsible not to. Especially considering the packages that are being thrown out there...

But I'm also 100% sure that the Cavs have other targets in mind via trade and are obviously really looking to pounce on the buy-out market more than anything. I think Griff probably is watching Dallas very very closely and is probably asking his sources about the likelihood of a Bogut/Deron buy-out on a daily basis.

I don't envy him at all right now. It will be interesting to see his response with limited resources to fill the holes on this roster.

He has LeBron James, who covers up a lot of roster flaws, and Kyrie Irving, the most talented guard in the NBA below 25. I'd say he has it pretty good as far as GM gigs go.

I don't think that was his point at all. I think his point is that we have to try to correct our roster with limited assets and fill gaps with key pieces injured. And any GM with LeBron on the roster does have a lot of pressure though. But the point is we have a pretty weak bench and need contributors and Griff has a big task ahead of him to make it happen.

Lebron and Kyrie are considered untouchables. Hence, his point of limited resources to improve the team.
