Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Okay, so I trust your recommendations on this once you have seen it:

IMAX, Dolby, or Samsung's? Loved RO, lost interest halfway through TFA and can't watch it on TV even when it's free.

Going tonight. Let's see how it goes

As long as it's better than that steaming pile of shit TFA, I'm excited. Decided will probably wait till after opening weekend.

Going tonight... From what I've heard, it's better than TFA, but... that's about it.

Dolby 2D is actually fantastic, but, for some viewings IMAX is better.. an example would be Blade Runner. Simply put, most Dolby (Atmos) theaters have the sound up TOO high, and I know that sounds crazy but, with the way Atmos speakers are setup, it's simply too much audio and bass. But, for a movie like Dunkirk, unless you're talking IMAX 70mm, then Dolby would be better since it's more atmospheric.

If I were going to see a movie where I care less about picture quality or the atmosphere created by the audio engulfing me, then I'd pick IMAX because of how the theaters are setup; I find the seating to be more comfortable in general and it's simply a pleasant all around viewing experience. So for a psychological thriller, etc, I'd go with IMAX.. almost every time.

If I were to pick between the 3 for Star Wars, I'd go with Dolby if it's for 2D, IMAX for 3D. Dolby has deeper blacks, and higher resolution (8k effective display) and you can generally tell the difference given the viewing distance. IMAX looks stunning, but, Dolby looks better on average IMHO.

Metacritic user scores released today... a LOT lower than TFA's...

Coming in at 5.3... Pretty low all things considered (things to consider: a lot of people leave 0's if they simply disliked the film, it's not really a true 1-10 scale for many people, but, since that's true for every movie, the scoring still somewhat works).

Anyway, more negative and mixed than positive at this point.

Seriously considering Samsung then....if my son wants to see it, we'll go.

Honestly, wtf is so hard about doing this even halfway right? RO was fantastic. Are the writers/directors/producers just mailing it on, or what? Are they just going for maximumass appeal/LCD?

I'm not sure... I mean, two people I trust this board regarding Star Wars seemed to suggest the movie was .. meh .. and reading the USER reviews.. it's pretty obvious a lot of people were let down. Also seems to reaffirm my suspicion that many professional critics are overly eager to maintain their relationship with Disney studios by way of glowing reviews; especially considering how they've made it known that they retaliate against unfavorable critics.

But, if you go back and look at TFA, I think maybe Abrams wanted to just duplicate the box office and the audience's experience? My guess is, that'd be his argument as to why TFA felt so much like Star Wars redux because, that was the intent of the film, to reintroduce the EXACT same theme to a new audience (I'm assuming he means kids, and people who haven't seen SW).

Financially, it worked, TFA was .. financially .. a massive success. But as I said in the week following it's release, that people would begin to re-evaluate TFA as the hype wears off... and they did. And most agree it's really not that great, and it's unimaginative at best. So much so, that it's difficult to justify sitting through 2 hours of it since you could just watch A New Hope.

With this movie.. I'm not sure.. I guess Johnson wanted to do something unique, something exceptionally original.. He took a risk, and from the sounds of it, it doesn't pay off and perhaps isn't executed as well as one might have hoped.

I mean, I dunno, but, whatever he presented to Disney, they signed him on to 3 new films. That might just be hype though, I don't know if there's a signed (enforceable) contract, or if that's just a clever marketing ploy to drive up The Last Jedi box office with affirmations of Johnson's directing abilities.

Curious to see how this goes tonight...

I think this is the point. Unless you were born in the mid 60s, the only new release Star Wars movie you had seen in theaters was the Prequels and the awful Clone Wars cartoon movie. TFA was the first new, watachable SW for a lot of people. So I get why he did a redux....just wish he had been more creative.

Some of it pays off. I'd say most of his risks/creative choices payed off. It was the parts of the movie he tried to play safe which we bad...or at least boring.

He's writing all 3, but he's only for sure directing the 1st one as of now. His writing, either with Looper, Brick or pats of Last Jedi, has always been creative. Maybe his story combined with other directors might be a great match.

I can't go in the spoilers thread yet because I haven't seen it. I might go tonight. Has anyone figured out the best way to see it

2D:
standard
DBOX
XD
Dolby Cinema

3D:
3D Standard
3D DBOX
3D XD
3D IMAX
3D RPX

I saw this is one of the movies where some scenes are shot in IMAX, so I'm leaning towards that. At the same time, Star Wars is the kind of movie DBOX was made for. And the added contrast of Dolby Cinema could make a difference.

Am I the only one who cares this much about maximizing the theater experience?

Seeing it tomorrow... I've had about 20-30 direct reviews of the movie.

I respect zero of those reviews, because it seems like something a Star Wars fanboy jizzes for when they won't give their true feelings.

Also, the tickets put me into my fifth and sixth free movie since July... What I did before stubs rewards was a massive mistake.
