If you're still experiencing problems with the thanks button, you could always rep the old way by using this button, in the bottom left hand corner of the poster's info (right below posters rep power):

Instead of a thanks button, why not have a thumbs up button and a thumbs down button like yahoo answers. I like the thanks button, but why not have an anti-thank as well?

See above. You don't get access to a thanks button until after a certain number of posts (25?). In the meantime, there's another way to thank as described in post #19 above.
