The 2016 Tank Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm still unclear on why people always give the Browns the benefit of the doubt, as if they've proven ANYTHING as an organization. They fuck literally everything up year after year.

Yes, this year should have been a designed tank and presumably was. I get that.

I don't know anything about La Canfora, and he may very well suck like the rest of the local media...but I do find it bizarre when people defend the Browns organization as if they've killed anything.

The reality is that this last draft appears to have collected some very solid players (no immediate impact players thus far), Shelton and Pryor appear to have developed into impact players, Collins trade and the guys seem to like Hue.

Other than that...were there any developments that tell us the Browns deserve defending yet? Or is a wait

La Canfora used to be Browns neutral. He's BFFs with Mike Lombardi.

When the Browns "hired"* Mike Lombardi as GM in 2013, Browns fans rightly criticized the move because Lombardi had spent the last 6 years in the media, and the previous decade helping construct the demise of the Raiders. La Canfora (and other media cronies like Jim Nantz) were pretty condescending in dismissing the legit questions about Lombardi's qualifications. The main one being fans wondering why it took him 6 years to get a front office job when he had been looking for one.

After he was justifiably fired, Bellichick gave him a do nothing job because they are old friends and because they didn't have to pay him because the Browns owed him money. He was hoping teams would say "Oh wow, he works for the Patriots, we should hire him." Instead they said, "No, he's still an idiot".

Ever since Browns fans were proven right about how bad Lombardi is, La Canfora's had an axe to grind. So while it's easy to criticize the Browns, La Canfora is not objective about it. For example, he recently wrote a piece saying the Browns were by far the least attractive head coaching vacancy...even though everyone knew Hue Jackson was staying. He just wanted to bash the Browns.

*To this day, I am not convinced that Haslam wanted to hire either Banner or Lombardi. I think the NFL forces new owners to hire someone who's connected throughout the league to act as a spy in case the new owner is crazy or stupid. Which in this case, is true, we were just forced to have an incompetent CEO and GM to boot.

Baskin and Phelps gives this man air time. Then Bull and Fox replay it all, is this a ratings pull? I turned it off for good, they shouldn't give that asshole a second on our air waves to just crap on our time in a journalist perspective.

If there is a mole, then there needs to be some GoT spiking going on.

Gotta be because they're a CBS station and he's a CBS analyst.

The Browns certainly don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. That said, the assumption that JLC is a good, honest reporter because the Browns are perennially bad is a hot take at best. The guy has taken plenty of unnecessary jabs at the organization.

I'm fine with anyone shitting on Jimbo because he's been terrible since the day he took over.

That said, I think it's important to recognize that this is the 9th different head coach - Palmer, Davis, Robiskie, Crennel, Mangini, Shurmur, Chudzinski, Pettine and now Jackson - and 9th different front office - Dwight Clark into Butch Davis into Phil Savage into George Kokinis into Eric Mangini into Mike Holmgren/Tom Heckert into Joe Banner/Mike Lombardi into Ray Farmer into Sashi Brown/Paul DePodesta.

I don't think it's fair at all to blame the current group of people in charge for previous regime's failures. Sashi/Paul/Hue have only had one offseason and one season under their belt and should be judged on that alone.

1-15 isn't fun for anybody, but considering they completely tore down what already was a 3-13 roster, it shouldn't have surprised anyone they had a bad season. They practically came out and said this was a 100% tank year.

Their expected W/L was 3.5-12.5 which is pretty much the caliber of team they were. A 3-4 win squad that ended up only winning 1 due to the fact they ended up playing six different guys at QB and suffered some general bad luck.

"Cleveland Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman's name is included in a police report detailing an alleged felonious assault that took place early in Cleveland the morning of Dec. 31, but his attorney said Coleman was not even present."

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/18414141

The incident, which took place in the lobby of The Pinnacle Condominiums on West Lakeside, where Coleman lives, left victim Adam Sapp of Mayfield Heights, Ohio, hospitalized at Lutheran Medical Center with a ruptured eardrum and a concussion.

Coleman's agent, David Mulugheta, issued a statement saying: "Corey, while aware of the incident, denies the allegations that have been made and looks forward to clearing his name."

According to the report, Sapp and Nina Holman, who is listed as a witness, were walking toward the elevator at about 2:50 a.m. on Dec. 31 at The Pinnacle when four men got off the elevator.

A verbal confrontation followed, and Sapp "is unclear of what happened next, but he was woken up by Nina Holman in a stairwell," the report states.

Sapp could not identify any of the four men, but the reports states that Holman told him Coleman was one of those involved.

Sapp then lost consciousness, the report says.

Medical EMS woke Sapp up in the stairwell and treated him. A police officer on the scene also talked with Sapp. He declined to file a police report and said he did not remember any details about the altercation, the report says.

Holman then told a friend she with whom she was staying with at The Pinnacle that Coleman "beat up Sapp," the report says.

Holman, reached by phone by ESPN, said she could not talk about the altercation.

Coleman traveled with the Browns the afternoon of Dec. 31 for the team's season finale in Pittsburgh.

A police investigation may include video evidence from The Pinnacle's cameras.

This really should be the first post of the 2017 Tank thread.
Should be pretty cut and dry whether he was involved or not. If it took place in the lobby, it will be on camera.

A lady named Nina Holman knows who Corey Coleman is off-hand? ehhh....

Poor little guy must have been so innocent... Probably never said a word..

Congrats guys. I agree. Lock it up.

You're probably right that this particular thread has run its course. But, I always found it kind of a sad and pathetic one.

The last game against Pittsburgh in particular grated me. I grew up in the 80s when the Browns were good and beat the Steelers. The hatred of Pittsburgh was burned into me through my uncles and grandfather. It is different than Cincinnati or even the Ravens. It had always been as a source of pride for me as a Browns fan that most of my life they had the lead in the series against them. When they returned in 99, they were up by double digits. That of course has evaporated. But, the thought of openly rooting for Pittsburgh for a draft pick disgusts me. I can't do that for the right to pick Garrett over Allen.

Whenever I go back to ohio, I see as much if not more Steelers gear in the stores and probably more people wearing it than wear Browns gear. I feel worse for fans born after say 85 since they've never seen winning or know what it is to be proud to be a Browns fan. I guess there isn't much more for me to say about this past season or this thread.

The Browns certainly don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. That said, the assumption that JLC is a good, honest reporter because the Browns are perennially bad is a hot take at best. The guy has taken plenty of unnecessary jabs at the organization.

Yeah, I found it strange that every 2nd or 3rd article he wrote seemed to bash the Browns. At first, I thought it was since he was from Baltimore. But, after hearing about his connection with Lombardi it makes more sense now. That said, the onus is on the Browns to improve themselves. If that happens, people like LaCanfora will go away.
