The Chubb-Hub Yardage Delivery Service

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The fact that we're even having the conversation around who the better back is (Barkley vs. Chubb) speaks volumes. One was number 2 overall, the other a second round pick.

This is why you don't reach for a back in the first round. I don't care if he's "better." The fact that they're even close means we got monster value at the pick.

Chubb is a stud.

Expand beyond the rest of the draft too:

-Kerryon Johnson (2nd-#43) is currently 11th in rush yards, 1st Lions RB to rush for 100 yards in a game since 2013. 554 yards at 5.4 ypc

-Hines (4th-#104) & Wilkins (5th-#169) have 108 carries and 529 yards combined for the Colts

-Phillip Lindsay (undrafted) is currently 7th in rush yards: 591 yards at 5.4 ypc . Fellow Broncos rookie Royce Freeman (3rd-#71) 309 yards at 4.4 ypc

-Penny (1st-27th) came into camp overweight and has been largely unimpressive but just had a 12 carries 108 yard game yesterday

-Michel (1st-31st) got hurt a few weeks ago and didn't do much vs. Tennessee yesterday but still boasts 453 yards at 4.3 ypc in 6 full games

-Ronald Jones (2nd-38th) has not looked good, but has been hurt for much of the season.

I mean, I dont want to point out the obvious but, you will run more when you are down in the game
I meant the passing game, Barkley's passing stats still count. I mean we're splititng hairs at this point because both of these guys are dynamic. I just wouldn't have Chubb ahead of Barkley in a best rookie RB to date list.

I 100% agree.

I don't think Chubb is better than Barkley, but he is not that far behind.

The issue I always had with Barkley was value, and we are proving taking a RB in the first, especially early first much less 2nd overall provides zero value, there are always good backs available in the 2nd and later.

That said, Chubb is much better than I thought, and I loved the pick.

Excuse my ignorance, but how hard is it to teach run blocking?

Are you talking linemen or skill position players?

What I've seen is some players go through high school, maybe even college, and they are the star. It's better for their coaches to use them as a decoy instead of developing blocking skills. That's what happened with a friend who received a full scholarship to a D1 program. They thought he could become a multi-purpose full back instead of a big tailback... the blocking skills were just too underdeveloped.

For interior offensive lineman, the basic skills may not be as developed because college programs didn't put the player in a three point stance. Plenty of linemen in college are on an island on the outside as their best pass blocker at left tackle, but in the pros they are going to move inside. Aside from the shift in responsibility, defensive linemen are just bigger, stronger and more powerful in the NFL.

It's an open secret that college programs haven't been producing polished offensive lineman for about a decade. It's more common to have an athlete like Brian O'Neill of the Vikings who was drafted on the potential to develop, not what he already can do.

Its teachable, but it also has to be about desire.

The issue is Michel was the third down back for Georgia so Chubb never really had to block that much, but I think Chubb can learn to be at least an average blocking rb because he has size and strength, just needs desire and technique.

What I don't understand is why not put your rookie rb out there so he can learn to block some. Show a few fails and see if his manhood is hurt and he then takes pride in blocking. I get that you don't want to get Baker killed while the rookie learns to block, but Kitchens just proved you can do things to help Chubb block while he learns.

I know its only 2 weeks, really only 1 week since Kitchens took over on a Wednesday, but I really am hoping he stays OC when we bring in a new coach. Heck maybe we have our coach and we just need to fill out the coaching staff, stranger things have happened.

Bingo. Even looking at it for surface value - we got the best QB in the draft, best DB in the draft, and second best RB in the draft (at the moment).

Drafting Barkley at two would have blown up our entire draft.

Lets take the Rams for example as they are a true SB contender and have the best running back in the league right now.

If you draft Gurley at 2 vs taking lets say Aaron Donald at 2, who has the bigger impact on your team? Both are elite at their position, but rb just isn't a difference maker and Gurley is damn good. You still need good WR's, decent OL and ofcourse a qb on offense while disrupting the QB on defense sets up the rest of the defense, and Danald alone is a disrupter.

Also we can see Ward 4th overall has made a much bigger impact than Barkley has to the Giants who still suck on Offense despite having a top 5 rb.

This isn't an Anti Barkley thing as I think Barkley is very good, its just not a value position in the modern nfl.

Best DB is pretty debatable at this point.

Derwin has been great so far.

Jaire is coming on strong.

This is no knock on Ward though. He’s very good.

Do you have the passer rating allowed stat on them both? Interceptions can be over rated when it comes to corners, so don't want to use a stat like that.

CB is arguably the toughest position to transition from college to pro and he's looking damn good/ahead of the curve. The rookie safeties in this class look nice but Ward is defending Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, and AJ Green on a weekly basis.

Have the other rookies had a task even remotely close to that?
