Maybe. I think a team will come along that offers more for that extra year of 'cheap ace'. Or, another team offers him an out clause with any extra years. It would be a nice gamble for the Gs, making 2026 a contending year, but I think that extra year would have to start at 25m and/or include reachable incentives that get it over that mark.

We'll never know, but did Woodruff pull a Baker Mayfield and play instead of resting/rehabbing due to his impending free agency to increase his value?

Fortunately for Biebs it occurred at the beginning of his last arbitration season and not at the end going into free agency. He should have more certainty for the next couple of years as he progresses through his rehab program rather than his agent negotiating a contract with freshly damaged goods over the fall/winter.

You're probably correct about the last year and yes a 25M mutual option would be just fine since neither party would have much to lose if it mutual.

I didn't realize Woodruff signed such a team friendly deal. If that really is the market, then maybe Bieber could return. I know the situation is a little different since Biebs is getting cut now instead of at seasons end but he's still not gonna be of much good next year anyway.

Bieber really isn't gonna pitch much next season, and IF he does, it won't be til the tail end of the season... So signing something like Woodruff, I think his agent will try to do... I wouldn't even be surprised if he did something in season with the team, to make sure he had a guaranteed job...

I am working on the assumption that doesn't pitch next season or if he does its only in September so there's little need for incentives next season. Plus there's no point in rushing his return if he agrees to a three year deal.

I could see Shane pushing for a mutual option but the maybe the last year they can include another 5M in incentives so it remains a team option.

Year 1: 5M
Year 2: 15M
Year 3: 20M team option with another 5M of incentives or 20M with 2.5M guaranteed with no incentives.

Year 1: 13.125 MM
Year 2: FA/QO or 80 % of 2024 contract value or ~ 10 MM
Year 3: $ 20 MM mutual option

Guardians.. are going to walk away from all of this save for the $ 13.125 MM owed on Bieber's 2024 contract.. Bieber will have the surgery.. rehabilitate.. and come back sometime in late 2025 as a FA.. probably at the trading deadline at the very earliest, if at all in 2025..
