You make reasonable points...I just disagree that Oakley is in the wrong here. I certainly agree that Oak committed assault. But context is important too. Surrounding Oak with eleven security guards preemptively is essentially putting him in an unconforfable position where such a reaction is to be expected. This isn't the first time Dolan has had security surround Oak at the Garden.
I also don't see why it's wrong for an ex-player to be critical of a horribly run franchise. Magic was super critical of Jim Buss and now Jeanie is actually bringing him into the organization. Dolan on the other hand has excluded Oak from all the 75th Anniversary Knicks celebrations while honoring lesser players who had unremarkable Knicks tenures. Dolan has all but made it uncomforable for Oakley to watch games at the arena. Dolan has thin skin and an absurd ego.
I will admit that I am biased though. I love Charles Oakley and despise Dolan.
Awesome, thanks for clearing that up for me!
Ya, I don't dislike Oakley, he always played w/ a lot of heart. Clearly there's a lot of history here, because no, you don't just show up w/ that much security w/o there being some prior issues.
At the same time, if someone asks the question, "Hey, how many security guards can I bring to escort you from your seat that WON'T result in you assaulting the staff?", you probably have an issue already.
Ex players can be critical, absolutely, it's their right as it is yours to complain about the team and its direction. Eric Dickerson had the same right in LA. However, I feel it's naive to expect a warm welcome, ticket comps, or anything else if the pretense of your relationship has become something negative.
In other words, you can complain all you want about my cooking and how bad it sucks, just don't be upset when I don't invite you over for Thanksgiving.
