The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Some speculation it might drop today.

GRRM just confirmed on his blog that there are two prequels in the works, cut down from the original four. Also confirms that they are NOT Dunk & Egg or Robert's Rebellion, probably the two most popular guesses. Hopes for the Blackfyre Rebellion are still alive...

Missed opportunity on Dunk and Egg.

Blackfyre Rebellion would be good. We know there's a good story, but it really isn't fleshed out that well so there's still a lot of mystery.

Well, Better Call Saul is currently a show that is quite popular, and I'd label that as roughly the same.

Says you!

Martin reasoned that a Robert’s Rebellion would not be as exciting on television, because he plans to expand on the events of the war in the remaining A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

When the book series ends, he wrote, “you will know every important thing that happened in Robert's Rebellion. There would be no surprises or revelations left in such a show, just the acting out of conflicts whose resolutions you already know. That's not a story I want to tell just now; it would feel too much like a twice-told tale.”

Yahoo is reporting five, and when I looked at his blog, that seems to be what he's saying as well. He started with two, then went to four, and now it's five. Those are all pilots, though, and it's pretty clear that not all of them will be greenlighted. He also mentioned that at least one of them is not set in Westeros, so maybe Asshai wasn't that far off as a guess.

I'm thinking that maybe something centered on the conquests of the Kings of Salt and Rock -- the Ironborn age. It's another more or less legendary time that isn't all that well fleshed out in the books, so lots of room for creativity.

Ahh, when he finishes the books....

I guess we will know whether it would make for a compelling tv series in 10 years.

I read it as 5 writers are now working on the ideas, but I suppose that could mean that there are 5 separate ideas out there. My prediction is that Bryan Cogman is the 5th writer that is yet to be revealed.

By the time the books are finished HBO will have greenlit a Robert's Rebellion series and filmed all five seasons. :chuckle:

I love the quote about how he'd love to see a Dunk and Egg TV series after he's done with writing "8 or 9 or 10 more." Okay buddy. We aren't even sure you're going to finish the main series before you croak. I'll make sure not to hold my breath for you to write ten more Dunk and Egg short stories.

In other news, both Stannis Baratheon (The One True King) and Count Dooku work for the Spurs.

Honestly, I'd rather see Aegon's Conquest. There is a lot to work with there. A ton of stories and interesting plot points within the larger context of the conquest itself. We could see the ancestors of each of the major houses that we have already been introduced to. There is obviously a lot of excitement when it comes to battle, action, and intrigue.

I could see multiple seasons coming out of Aegon's Conquest easily, without usage of filler. Getting the right actors for Aegon, Rhaenys, Visenya, Orys, and the other heads of families would be critical though.

Wouldn't mind seeing the events of the long-night either. I can imagine the original setting of the show being right near the end of the long-night with flash-backs to before it started. They'd need to come up with their own characters and individual stories though. Gives them a lot of flexibility to work with and would be something truly different from Game of Thrones. Would miss the political intrigue though.

Robert's Rebellion would be a good spin off. Same with the long night. I am more curious as to the events of Bran the Builder most notably why did he need the help of the giants and magic to build the crypts of Winterfell.

It may be like the Wheel of Time series where Robert Jordan died before finishing the books and they had to be finished by Brandon Sanderson. I fear the same will happen with A Song of Ice and Fire where GRRM will die before finishing the books and someone else will have to take them over.

Thought about putting this in the book thread, but this seems just as good a place given the genre. Robin Hobb recently released the final book in her Fitz and the Fool trilogy, and presumably her final book featuring Fitz as a main character. I'm not sure if any of you have read any of the other series that Hobb has written, but I've read most of them (still haven't gotten around to reading the Rain Wild Chronicles) and they're all quite good. I'd recommend giving them a read if you're into fantasy novels, which most of you probably are if you're browsing this topic.

They can be a little long-winded at times, but overall Hobb is a very good author. My favorite work from her thus far is the Liveship Traders Trilogy, which I thought sounded stupid but I ended up burning through. The three Fitz trilogies are all good, though, although admittedly I am just starting the final book in the third one.

As far as Hobb goes, I'd rank her under Abercrombie and Abraham as far as current fantasy authors go. She seems to have a comparable work rate, though, as unlike Martin she actually finishes books at a reasonable pace. I like some of Sanderson's stuff better too (the Mistborn trilogy was awesome, and I have high hopes for the Stormlight Archive as well although there are only two books out now), but Hobb is a better author. No one quite compares to Sanderson in work rate, though. Pretty sure that dude doesn't sleep.
