The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I just started reading the books through for the first time, and Jesus, Catelyn is such a fucking dick to Jon it's unbelievable. I didn't mind her show character much, I thought she was just kind of bland overall, but I absolutely despise her in the books.

I recently finished too. In the books it becomes really apparent that her pettiness is really what sets everything off. When they kill the karstarks at River run for instance because of her releasing Jaime. Like she essentially killed Rob by defying him which leads to others doing the same . There are several points in the rest of the books where if Rob were alive it would all be over...

Robb also would have lived if he had just listened to his fucking wolf.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. I'm not that far into the books (I just got to the part where Ned and Cat reunite in Kings Landing), but I was just like, damn. That was brutal.

First difference from the books that I wish would have made the show. Would have given Catelyn an interesting dynamic IMO, and would have been easy to add.
Dude you are going to love reading the books. Just wait until you get to books two and three where things are just so much richer and in depth for every character and plot you already like from the show.

I’m almost due for a re-read except I suck at reading anymore and practically have to take everything in in an audiovisual fashion now.

So a gazillions hours of old man Roy Dotrices GOT audiobooks coming up for me. I told myself I wouldn’t start reading through the first five again until the day the release date for 6 comes out but that literally could be never so....

On that note, I do have the audiobooks for all five books, so if anyone wants them, let me know and I’ll set up a Dropbox link

Or, Robb killed himself by breaking the marriage promise he'd made to the Freys.

I mean that is the literal reading of it offof cou, but the symbolic one is that his authority as long was undermined by his own mother's defiance. The Frey's probably don't get the Boltons or Karstarks on theirs side, or lose Jaime if not for Kat. Very important turning point.

Catelyn's a more complex character in the books. I got really irritated at her treatment of Jon too, reminded me of a sliver of what her sister fully becomes. But all the Tully's are hotheads anyway, so not surprising.

In my re-read as well, I forgot how smart a military mind that Catelyn has. Interesting ways she converses with and leads Robb to grow into a better battle commander more quickly.

Gazillions of hours of "P'tire Baelish" and "Bry-eene of Tarth" and characters that speak like they have marbles in their mouths.

Makes sense. She probably learned a lot from both her father and Ned, who were clearly good tacticians, hence the fact that they overthrew the Mad King.

Ned got himself killed because he couldn't apply those same concepts to court life like the Lannisters do.

You can apparently bet on who sits on the Iron Throne at the end of the story on Bovada. These are like, official odds. No clue how Arya and Bran are ahead of the Lannisters and Greyjoys, but hey, free money I guess.

I personally think there's very little chance a Lannister or Greyjoy ends the story on the throne.

I just feel like it's more likely that Yara Greyjoy sits on the throne over an all-seeing 17 year old cripple that has never left the north in his entire life. Neither of them will, but I just think the odds are a bit weird in some areas.

Maybe, but Bran is also the male heir to Winterfell, which at least gives him somewhat decent odds of ending up king if a whole lot of other people die. I don't think it will happen, but I could see it.

Personally, I hope Sam ends up king. That would be awesome, especially on the show where he's a much more likable character. Pretty much zero chance it happens, but I'd be on board.

Surprised the odds for Davos aren't a bit higher, especially ahead of someone like Cersei or Jaime whom nobody would follow. I could see him being named Regent for someone else also. So even though he wouldn't be King, he would still be sitting on the throne.
