The Rise of Skywalker spoilers thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Honestly Snoke was probably my favorite character out of this whole new trilogy- the mystery, the darkness, the evil. Anddddd- then he dies like a friggin' pussy.

EXACTLY !!! Like what the fuck...they build him up to be this gaudy villain, and then he dies the first time we see him on screen? Like that? C'mon man...

That's fair. Honestly, my biggest gripe is with the characters. I have no reason to care about any of them at this point and that has ruined the trilogy for me. I know I'm not alone with that. Honestly the only character I don't hate at this point is Rey, but even her I don't really care about. She's just kind of there. Like "hey, look, here's your new self-taught Jedi, now go love her because reasons!"

I think @howler1313 is right; episode 9 seems doomed because the characters just aren't appealing at this point. I have no desire to see the closure point of shitty characters.

I think a lot of people will watch episode 9 for the nostalgia factor alone, since it'll be viewed as a final farewell to Carrie Fisher and the symbolic end of the original trilogy's heroes. But when they try to carry on the main storyline with all new characters, I don't know if they have anything there.

My whole problem with Rey is that we're two films in and not only is she ridiculously overpowered, but it seems like she's also never seriously been tempted to not do the right thing. She feels really predictable to me to this point at least, like I know where her scenes are going even as they're happening. I hope they change it up a bit in episode 9. Still way better than Finn and Poe though.

For two whole films, there has been a remarkable lack of character development for her and the others. It doesn't help that the timeline is ludicrous. These two films happen over the course of like a week.

They should have given it at least a couple months in-between films that exposition could establish at least some growth and development. Instead, we get "It's been a hell of a week." Stupid. So stupid.

After two films we still know nothing about Rey. That is hardly good table-setting for a conclusion in the next film.

In the OT, we know a lot about Luke even after the first film. Empire builds on that and adds a personal struggle, and a big revelation. By Jedi we know how Luke operates and what makes him tick. Shit, even as mediocre as the PT was, we at least know who Anakin is, what his motivations are (even if laughable) and the stakes going into ROTS.

We don't know a thing about Rey's past, her present is a muddled rush, and we don't know what the hell she is about coming into Episode IX: "The Return of the Last Jedi's Revenge."

These films seem to have a lot of the same issues as the prequels in that it's really impossible to care about most of the characters, although at least the acting here is significantly better. The prequels had a slight advantage, though, because the principle characters were ones we were already familiar with like Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin, whereas the new trilogy basically has had to build things from the ground up. Unfortunately, they've mostly failed to create characters any more compelling than the awful work Lucas did with his preexisting characters in the prequels.

But if you look at Star Wars as a whole, only the original trilogy thus far has managed to give us iconic, great characters that we've all come to love. The prequels completely botched every new character they introduced and did fuck all with the ones that we already knew from the originals. The new trilogy hasn't managed to do much either, and the newest film mostly had the best characters constantly fucking up.

Idk. I loved Qui Gonn Jinn. Too bad he did not last past Ep.1

As far as the new movies, I really could give a flying fuck about any of those characters. In fact most of them just annoy me. Kylo Renn has to be the worst villain character in SW history.

I liked Qui Gon; Obi-Wan (McGregor's portrayal is really good IMHO; really defines the character at this point); loved Darth Maul, just wish he had a bigger part; Count Dooku was dope... I felt like these characters all died too soon and too abruptly... I'm still disappointed at how they were killed off in the films.

Not a fan of General Grievous in that they made him far too cartoonish... He was a character that could have worked, IMHO. I also found it interesting that he was studying under Count Dooku.

I thought Mace Windu was under utilized. I would have much preferred casting Laurence Fishburne rather than Sam L. as Fishburne would have been insanely perfect for the part. Basically just Morpheus as a Jedi Master... And oddly enough, the Matrix was released just two months prior to The Phantom Menace. I wonder if they reached out to him for the part and he just had filming obligations with The Matrix? Hmm..

Honestly the only characters I didn't like were Padme and Anakin... which.. kinda fucks up the entire prequels, doesn't it? :chuckle: I mean, they really were the worst parts of each movie. Both were stiff, and their lines felt recited almost like a high school drama. It was terrible. If you cut both Anakin and Padme out of the movies, all of their scenes, I think you'd end up with a better and more cohesive overall story than what we got.

I find that I liked the actors who played a lot of the prequel characters, but the characters themselves were typically dumb and boring. Like, Christopher Lee is awesome, but I can't remember a single thing about Count Dooku other than that Lee plays him. Same goes for Liam Neeson. Love him as an actor, but Qui Gon was a fucking dolt who constantly made inept decisions.

Agree on Jackson. Casting him as a Jedi was just monumentally stupid because literally the reason he is famous is because he's absolutely amazing when he's angry. And then you cast him as someone who never gets angry? Fucking stupid. He would have been a great Sith, potentially, or a great non-Jedi antagonist, but he was horribly miscast as a member of the Jedi council.

Never got into Dooku or Grievous at all. Windu was just there, really played no role to me.

Natalie Portman has an insane ability to act great in one movie and be a horrible actress in another. She chose the latter for all the SW movies she was in.

I didn't mind Samuel L playing Windu. Yea morpheous couldve been cooler, but i do not think it wouldve changed the lack of character building they did on him.

Have to Disagree w Jack Brickman on the Qui Gonn tip. I thought the character was great. One of the few things they did good and didnt fuck up.

A lot of the issues with prequals also arise with how horrible Hayden Christensen was at acting. Just not natural. If they chose someone who could really get into the role and didnt have to force everything, who knows how it couldve been.

LOL WHAT?!

Foolish to get my hopes up, but this looks like a lot of fun. After the snoozefest that was TLJ, a fun Ron Howard film might be exactly what this franchise needs.

When I heard the pitch for Rogue One I was thoroughly unimpressed. Ended up enjoying the film.

When I heard the pitch for this I rolled my eyes. Trailer makes it seem plenty enticing...

I mean from what I’ve heard, he doesn’t even sound like Han

There are a lot of rumors though that the actor who plays Solo is so bad that they had to reshoot several scenes over and over again. Not a good sign.
They fired the directors and re-shot 90% of the movie. Whether or not it was because of Ehrenreich I don't know. They hired an acting coach for him, but I've heard that's not really that uncommon.

Lord and Miller did a lot of improvising and going off script, which Lawrence Kasdan wrote and everyone seemed to love. The improvising lead to a lot of takes, few of which really matched the script. Some have also said Ehrenreich wasn't good at improvising, which isn't what the movie really called for.

Basically what I am saying is that there have been a ton of problems with the production, but seems like they were the result of a mad marriage between Lucasfilm and Lord/Miller. Hopefully, Ron Howard fixed most of it. But if it's still a mess, many people might put it all on Ehrenreich, which seems unfair to him, IMO.

Of course, he might also suck.
