I get your point, but I think the writer is clearly trying to draw a line in the sand between "old guard" Republicans, and those challenging them. My guess is the article is directed at every race where Steve Bannon and his financial backers are trying to get new blood into Washington by picking off Reoublicans who have opposed Trumps agenda. Bannon leaving the administration was very strategic....he's more important outside of the White House because of the way he will shake up these races.
I read above article as essentially a guy saying "protect the establishment"....which is a tough ask considering Congressional approval ratings are even lower than the Presidents. He's walking a tight rope of saying we need the "lifers" to remain inside to protect the country, while the country itself is fed up with elected officials that can't get anything done.
That was my take anyways.....
That all makes sense, except...what does "protect the establishment" actually mean? If he's just talking about supporting establishment Republicans in Congressional elections, why not just say that?
