Trump to Widow of Sgt. La David Johnson: 'He Knew What he Signed up For'
Trump faces controversy after U.S. Army deaths in Africa

U.S. President Donald Trump told U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson's widow Tuesday that "he knew what he signed up for ...but when it happens it hurts anyway," when he died serving in northwestern Africa, according to Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami Gardens.

"Yes, he said it," Wilson said. "It's so insensitive. He should have not have said that. He shouldn't have said it."

The president called about 4:45 p.m. and spoke to Johnson's pregnant widow, Myeshia Johnson, for about five minutes. She is a mother to Johnson's surviving 2-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. The conversation happened before Johnson's remains arrived in a commercial Delta Airlines flight at Miami International Airport.

Wilson witnessed as the widow, who is expecting their third baby in January, leaned over the U.S. flag that was draping his casket. Her pregnant belly was shaking against the casket as she sobbed uncontrollably. Their daughter stood next to her stoically. Their toddler waited in the arms of a relative.

There was silence. Local politicians, police officers and firefighters lined up to honor him for his service and for the efforts and discipline that got the former Walmart employee to defy all odds as a 25-year-old member of the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Johnson, who participated in a mentorship program Wilson founded in 1993, died during a mission fighting alongside Green Berets. Islamic militants ambushed them Oct. 4 with rocket propelled grenades and machine guns. The team reportedly didn't have overhead armed air cover and were in unarmored pickup trucks. Reuters reported the lack of planning upset the French.
Welp.

At least the Cavs won

Taken out of context. He was saying that this soldier was brave for putting himself in the line of fire, even though he knew he could die. Has the widow deemed it inappropriate?

This military backlash against Trump is becoming deafening.

"He knew what he signed up for"

????

How do you screw this up? "We are so sorry for your loss. He died defending the country. Your husband died a hero" How hard was that?

Lets take yours out of context too. "Your husband died"

Yep that's what it is. Trump has just been misquoted this entire time! Face it, the man is a failed President. World leaders are already ignoring him and running out the clock for the next 3 years. He's an impotent, lame duck.

Time to focus on the midterms.

Within context that quote probably doesn't come off as bad. Don't know if the widow noticed or cared, not that I could imagine Trump doing a proper job comforting anyone about anything.

It is an interesting entry into the study of reciprocal hypocrisy since you KNOW a comment like that by Obama would be talked about all week by conservative media members. And hell, I'm sure the liberal press will have a field day and it'd drag on too if he weren't always about to say something else shitty.

Remember when Obama ordered dijon mustard and THAT was a right wing talking point? Hell, I always get dijon on a sandwich at my work cafeteria, it just tastes better.

Oh look, a second judge just humiliated Trump and blocked his unconstitutional travel ban.

So much winning this week.

You think so? You may be disappointed.

I'd be willing to bet that Trump's current ban was specifically crafted to force a full Supreme Court appeal on the merits, and to win. They want a decision on this because otherwise they'll be plagued by random district court judges shutting down every attempt to limit immigration. So, he ordered an indefinite ban that won't become moot, and applied that indefinite ban to countries that aren't Muslim. They want to force the Court to decide how much discretion a President actually has, and trust me, you don't want to force that decision.

Picture a situation like 9-11, with the President (any President) shutting down all immigration temporarily from the country (or countries) involved, and some district judge ordering it halted. Or perhaps an outbreak of a really shitty disease. That's an emergency situation where the time it takes to file appeals, get hearings and briefings, etc. is simply too long. Those are the exact fact scenarios the Solicitor General will present to the Court. So, if pushed, the Supreme Court is unlikely to let district court judges retain the ability to halt such limits the way they have been doing, and will be forced to recognize very broad Presidential authority.

The Court has been trying to avoid addressing that issue so far, but this particular ban and a dumb judge probably handed the Administration the exact test case they wanted.

RE: "He knew what he signed up for", we can debate whether or not empathy is an important quality for a president to have, but does anyone seriously think Trump is an empathetic person?

Liberals get destroyed in here week after week and I can’t tell whether they realize it or not...

No.

But it's probably best not to give Trump ammunition in his war against the media/Left by deliberately misrepresenting his quotes to try and make him look bad.

Eh. Boobie would regularly post crap hoping something would stick. I think Mr. Orange is going a little overboard with the obvious rhetoric (though I agree with a lot of it obvi). Other than that, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Q-Tip usually does a good job with discussions of legality and the like, but I don't really see guys like Stannis or Gouri getting destroyed in here.
