The cream of the crop come here and do extremely well. I have no problem with this.

Mass immigration would be another thing entirely....

Who is talking about mass immigration?

Actually the President doesn't want immigrants (read: people) from these countries... Why do we want people from these shithole countries? Why not from Norway?

The President is saying that immigrants (read: people) from Norway are preferred to immigrants (read: people) from shithole countries in Africa ... is he not?

You don't make the rules here gour.

Using his context is out of bounds, a personal attack on his pre-conceived notions.

The place can be a shithole and have great people. Nobody suggested everybody from said shithole is a terrible, awful person.

It's insulting and below the office of the president. I understand the distinction you are trying to make, but it was ignorant, and an awful thing to say. And when you couple it with the suggestion we take more people from country "X" instead of country "Y", you in fact, are, coupling the place that is being described as a "shithole" with the people from there.

I haven't laid down any rules; I've tried to engage you in a rational conversation and I see now, again, what a mistake that was.
Nobody is forcing you to respond to me.

So nobody has refereed to any other place as a shithole? Other than huber?

Trump was wrong on this and I believe he should apologize.

My wife is West African, I've been to West Africa multiple times, and it's a beautiful place. Are crime rates higher? Yes. Is there more poverty? Yes. Is the infrastructure poor? Yes.

But by and large, the people you meet are significantly friendlier, appreciative, and hard working than the average American, IMO. That's a general observation, but I believe it to be true. On top of that, even the poorest of people often know multiple languages, and exhibit a level of intelligence you don't often find here in the states. I'm just trying to illustrate a point, but imagine going to a trailer park or poor inner city, and meeting a 12 year old who can speak English, French, and a local dialect all fluently.

Also, when you factor in the condition of West Africa, and more broadly the continent of Africa, to call it a "shithole" is ignorant of why it is that way today.

The last point I'd make, and AZ had already brought it up, but the immigrants from West Africa to the US would have to be seen as a net positive to our country. The level of education is generally higher than the average American.

So, anyways....it was a really stupid comment. It shows ignorance on multiple levels, one being a lack of appreciation of immigrants who have made a substantial impact in the US, and will in the future, but also one of the common irritants of many people from individual countries in Africa, to lump them all in together and call the collective continent a "shithole". And I think about the many friends, family, and others I have met while on my visits to Ghana, and I'm embarrassed our President has just essentially called their homes a "shithole". I can't defend that....

There is certainly is ignorance in what Trump said. The truth is that we get a lot of the best people from a lot of those countries. They really make outstanding immigrants, and I've actually posted articles here before about how they are fantastic additions to our country. And, not all of those countries deserved to be lumped together -- things like literacy rates, etc., can vary pretty widely.

However, I do think there is some merit in not taking large number of uneducated immigrants from those countries that are, to some extent, shitholes, because we're clearly not getting just the best and brightest.

Actually, Trump did suggest that when he said he didn't want immigrants from those "shitholes" coming to America.

Nobody is forcing you to respond to me.

That's true, but simultaneously, I have to ask, why are you posting so many posts with such little content and you keep saying the same things? Like this:

So nobody has refereed to any other place as a shithole? Other than huber?

I already told you I've done this myself; typically when talking about Cleveland.... But if you were to ask me seriously, in a meeting with Congressional leaders, I would definitely not refer to Cleveland, Ohio as a "shithole." It's actually a nice place to live, just not my preference.

So in saying all of this, I have to ask, what is your larger point?

Well if he did in fact mean all of them then it's not something I can get on board with.

The larger point is that it's not racist to call a place a shithole. That doesn't mean he shouldn't be careful with who he shares his comments with.

Great...

A high school diploma or two years of qualified working experience is required to get an immigrant visa, FWIW; even through the lottery program.

It's clear that's what he meant.
The only thing I heard was that he said the place was a shithole in a private conversation. Going on that it doesn't sound racist to me.
