The two point guard offense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hear me out...what if we do...3 point guards

It inevitably devolves into an artificial "your turn/my turn" exercise that cripples offensive flow. I remember this exact debate when we had Kyrie and Dion, and asked for example of where it worked. The first answer was Dragic/Bledsoe, which of course didn't last. The other was IT and Dumars, which wasn't a "dual combo guard" situation at all.

Like I said, if it involves pairing the starting PG with a 3rd 4th guard, fine. But it doesn't work if both start.

They probably did. They just listed the top 4. And the one that is the best was with Okoro and Wade. And again, the eyeball test supports the numbers. And vice versa.

I was thinking of the Cp3/SGA/Dennis lineup OKC ran a few years ago. Although time has shown SGA is more of a scorer than a pg and Dennis is just about everything I dont want my guards to be

That's what always seems to happen. It may seem to work for a bit, but it always ends up sorting itself out otherwise.

You'd probably have to ask Wham for sure since he is the one who is posting the information.
From the eyeball test? This group shares the ball the best and plays the best defense. Good defense will add to the +/- coulmn too.

Wham?
The numbers don't explain why one grouping is better than the other. Sorry, can't help you there.

I was struck by how well the Cavs did with two point guards on the floor at the same time. Even with many different combinations of the other three players it seemed like the Cavs dominated the opposition most of the time Garland and Rubio were on the floor together, despite Rubio being a poor shooter (36.3% from the field).

My guess is having two point guards prevented opponents from doubling Garland. When they did he would get the ball to Rubio which gave us another distributor looking at a 4-on-3 situation.

Also, the Cavs could put a point guard on each side of the floor and attack whichever side appeared to be the weakest defensively with a point guard who can break down the defense off the dribble and distribute to a big.

Finally, with two point guards they could take turns running the play, allowing the other to rest and conserve energy so he would be more effective when it was his turn to initiate.

There may be other reasons why Garland and Rubio were so effective together but those are some theories I came up with.

So now I'm wondering if the Cavs can replicate that success with Garland/LeVert or Garland/Rondo. LeVert is more of a shooter than a distributor but he's certainly capable of attacking the defense off the dribble. Same for Rondo. I will be watching to see how often JBB goes with Garland and either LeVert or Rondo and whether one or both of those combos can have similar success as Garland/Rubio.

“Caris LeVert is a tremendous player for any style,” [Pacers' coach Rick] Carlisle said. “He’s a guy who can legitimately play point guard, which makes him a tremendous playmaking 2 guard. Him and Garland in the backcourt is really dynamic.”
