Trade the 8th pick? Where? Why? How?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
All Charlotte got back was two future second round picks? I don’t really get the move for Charlotte. They save a few million next year, yes, but still have to pay $16+ million to Mozgov in 2019-2020... Dwight was an expiring contract. So they don’t really save money, they actually take on more and only get 2 2nd rounders?

Kind of confused by that.

They must really love Mozgov :chuckle:

You realize Kawhi is from California, right? Home holds a big appeal for some players; it's the same reason Paul George has talked extensively about playing for the Lakers.

Kawhi re-signing in Cleveland is such wishful thinking. The guy is unhappy playing for one of the best-run organizations in sports and arguably the GOAT coach; how do you think he'd mesh with the dysfunctional mess that is the Cavs and Ty fuckin' Lue?

I can see how pairing LeBron with Kawhi (the closest tandem to Jordan/Pippen the league would ever see) has appeal for some people, but you probably lose both guys after 1 year and then have zero assets to show for it.

I know he is from Southern California but money has alot to do with this decision. Kawhi should probably be making double of what he should be making because his endorsements are so lacking. He is losing out of 20-30 million a year compared to other top 5 players in the league.

Yes he wants to go back to his home market but that market is also a top 2 market in the country.

The Spurs are a great organization and it will be an adjustment for him to come here. There is something about the Spurs players that doesn't get the endorsement money though.

This isn't something I came up with, I listen to alot of basketball podcasts. They have been bring this up for years for Kawhi. I think the injury stuff pushed Kawhi over the edge. He is essentially taking a discount to play with the Spurs.

What if LeBron & PG went to the Nets.... Seriously. They have room for 2 maxes.

D'Angelo Russell
Dinwiddie
PG 13
Bron
Dwight

I think he’s hoping the LA market compensates for his lack of outward personality. Saying people won’t recognize Kawhi is silly as he’s a top 5 player and sports cornrows in 2018. This is strictly about sponsorship money (he felt like he got lowballed on the Jordan brand deal) although Tony Parker and Manu didn’t help with the situation last season which is disappointing. That entire ordeal gave me Rose flashbacks with the Bulls, where the FO kept hinting a return that would never happen.

The Dwight trade is really odd because he had an amazing season statistically and seemed happy.

The only sense I can make out of it, is Mitch is ensuring they're at the top of the tank for next year.

This does make sense. They must have framework trades in place for Kemba. If they move Kemba, 2019 doesn't really matter in terms of free agency. They aren't getting a max player.

The problem is that "mortgaging the next few years" isn't likely to bring you team that will last very long. So if we mortgage the next few years for a Kawhi rental...what then? We compete next year, but then LBJ is certain to leave next summer because we'll have blown all our assets (our 2019 draft pick already is gone if LBJ is still here), and we'll have absolutely no way to improve. It is simply short-sighted if the goal is to keep LBJ here for the rest of his career.

If you want to keep him here long-term, then you have to build something that looks like it can last/improve for more than just the 2018-2019 season. That might mean not maximizing the chances for this coming season, but trying to remain competitive for that season while building a team that will improve around LBJ moving forward.

ETA: I should add that I don't think it's possible to build that kind of team as long as Ty Lue remains the head coach.
Except where LBJ is in his career, I think he is too old to allow a bunch of very young guys to develop. Yes I would take a year of

I saw something that this keeps them under the tax for this upcoming year as well? Really a head scratcher of a trade.

Looks like the Hornets are going full tank.

I wasn't saying he is unrecognizable because of his appearance or how well he has played. He is unrecognizable in the sense that he doesn't have any ads featuring him and getting his face out to the public. It's just a lack of endorsements to put his face out there so everyone knows who he is.

It would be funny if they traded for Mozgov as a piece to trade back to us. Kemba, Marvin Williams, and Mozgov works for Hill and JR.

I kinda think this may make a Kemba trade less likely?

The only reason we'd even theoretically be able to get Kemba would be our willingness to take on a bad contract like Batum or Williams. That's a horrible position for the Hornets to be in. By trading Dwight and getting them out of the luxury tax this coming year, they may have just saved themselves from having to tie Kemba to a bad contract. Doesn't mean they still wouldn't trade him, but could potentially get better value for him now.

Anyone else have this thought?
