Upcoming Roster Moves

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
By your anything can happen scenario, Erik Gonzalez...just called up to the Marlins....will suddenly become an All Star...lol.

Do you know how many qualified batters last season had a walk rate below 4?

Not one.

OGonz is below 2.

I dont care how we score, just so we do.

And we are doing it as well as just about anybody by...

Getting on base and running well. And putting the ball in play with RISP...not by striking out in the clutch going for bombs.

Might as well take it a step further too. Hedges is holding this team back offensively. When the last 2 hitters are Mercado and Hedges, well that's where innings go to die. Those 2 will be gone or have their roles severely reduced, but it can't happen fast enough for me.
Too true.

I really like Austin Hedges as a person and as a defensive catcher. Tough as a two-dollar steak. Strong beard game. I wish he had enough bat to justify his place in the lineup.

But him swinging at yet another strike three a foot out of the zone sends me to the drugstore for more blood pressure meds. I cannot answer the question "why does Hedges start most games?" without using the phrase "pictures of Tito sucking off a goat."

OK

Everybody that at the start of spring training had Kirk McCarty on your list of pitchers who would be added to the 40 man and called up raise your hands.

He may have been 40th on my list of Guardian pitchers...lol.

This is a stupid comparison. Erik Gonzalez was given his chance and failed. Just because he didn’t find much success doesn’t mean OGon won’t especially since OGon is a far superior hitter.

Furthermore you’re arguing to continue to give Mercado and Rosario AB. What is their walk rates?

I can semi raise my hand. I thought he was a candidate to make the roster along with Tully, but I didn't actually add him since we had Allen and whatnot.

McCarty is a soft tossing lefty.. so, @Tondo can raise his hand...

:chuckle:

Yep. I've said he'd make it since 2019. The time has come...

He is a fringe MLB guy, but he knows how to pitch, is competitive and will eat innings for you. I think he will fit in nicely as the long man on this roster.

OGonz career MiLB BB rate is 3.6.

Mercado career MLB rate is 6.3. Ameds is 4.7.

Plus, both can run and play defense.

OGonz can do neither.

Now, OGonz is putting up offensive numbers that are intriguing, if you ignore the things that make his success against MLB pitching more than a little suspect.

If we fall out of contention, he would be an interesting call up, just to see what he could do.

So, what do we have to lose by calling him up now?

Ball games.

We lose nothing right now if we brought him up... it's not like we have had the best production from RF anyways. If he cannot produce by the trade deadline we go get a RF who can ya know?

Uh, we lose a lot of defense.

I'm looking to win right now. This team in this division can win it...if it stays reasonably healthy.

This org has the resources to go out and acquire a significant bat ..without subtracting from the present team and without trading away prospects that leave the org short at any position.

Apparently for everybody else, winning is far from a priority.

The problem is who can we acquire that's within that reason?

Laureano isn't within reason, he would actually cost to much potential prospect capital this season...

Do you want to change a word in this?

No one is saying Oscar G is going to be a great player ... and 3.6 BB rate isn't that different than 4.7 either and how about another starter's 2 for 77 walk rate? Yet, people are saying that he can't be worse (or that much worse) than Chang who is hitting .176 in 6 game rehab stint so far. And, a lot of people were hoping that Reyes would play more OF this year (when he and Oscar are about the same ability .958/.957 in fielding chances in the minors for OF). Based on needing to play stellar defense, are we going to bench Naylor because he dropped 2 balls at first that were right into his mitt (at least Sheets hit the bottom of his glove - not actually in it)?

For me, I am also intrigued just to make sure we know what is there because we are saying Bieber will be traded next year due to his pending free agency. Guess who is also a free agent in the same year? Yet FO maybe thinking Naylor has that spot wrapped up going forward.

And before anyone thinks that Oscar G is going to have a chance to be called up ... the DeSantos recall yesterday pretty much made it much harder for it to happen.

Right now, we have 12 position players. With Chang coming off COVID (sometime this week per announcers and by next Wed at the latest for 20 days from April 29), we will be at 41 players (this assumes the only way Santos could come right back up pre-10 day minor league stint was to be called up as a full 40-man roster player vs COVID recall).

Thus, now either Castro, Santos, McCarty, Oviedo or Chang need to be cut to get back to 40 man. With them actually using Santos (since April 20th other than Sunday) and Castro (for 2 prior DH recalls) -- I assume it is Oviedo cut over McCarty (who will also be optioned down for Chang to come back on 26 man). McCarty will be that someone expendable to come up when bullpen is taxed.

By the time Morris and Vargas come back off 60-day dl, we can then try to send McCarty back off 40 man (as we will have Morris to make spot appearances as well) and Palacios maybe ready then come back up over Chang (after he gets another month experience playing the OF). Thus, ending the Oscar prayer to be called up.

I just thought if McCarty replaced Santos on the 40 man for Chang's Covid call-up that they could have then be both off the 40 man without being designated for assignment when Chang comes back later this week .... to keep some 40 man flexibility. Yet, that isn't how they (could have) played it.
