Urban Meyer is stepping down as coach of the Florida football team, athletics director Jeremy Foley announced Saturday afternoon in a release.

"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family.

"After consulting with my family, Dr. Machen, Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family.

"I'm proud to be a part of the Gainesville community and the Gator Nation and I plan to remain in Gainesville and involved with the University of Florida.

"I'm very appreciative for the opportunity I've had to be a part of a tremendous institution - from Dr. Machen to Jeremy Foley and the entire administrative staff at UF. I'm also very thankful for the chance to work with some of the best assistants in college football and coach some of the best college football players and watch them grow both on and off the field as people. I will cherish the relationships with them the most."

Meyer will coach his last game for Florida against Cincinnati on Jan. 1 at the Sugar Bowl.

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

well this is weird.

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

His BFF was leaving for the NFL. :chuckles:

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

Must be pretty sick.

Hate to see someone with so much talent go down so early, but hopefully he can deal with whatever he has and come back.

For him to retire it must be something like cancer.

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

Must be HIV from raw dawging Tebow.

Seriously though, none of this really makes much sense.

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

Hopefully this will end up like the Tiger Woods story. At first it was a car accident, then stories about his wife and other women started to surface ;)

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

Tebow is like a cult leader or something...

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

wow... hopefully he is ok

Charlie Strong just left so Im interested to see who they bring in

Agreed, but his statement said something about "ignoring his health for years" - implying that its not a newly-diagnosed disease or any singular illness.

Call me a d*ck or whatever, but I'm pretty skeptical if this due to just vague health concerns. I don't trust college coaches as far as I can throw them (Though for his sake, I hope its actually not related to health).

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

While not much has been released yet about his condition, it is possible that it is related to the issue that caused him to check himself into a Gainesville-area hospital with dehydration just hours after the Gators' loss to Alabama in the SEC Title Game.

In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Meyer revealed that doctors discovered a cyst on his brain while he was an assistant at Notre Dame that flared up on occasion due to stress. This seems to be the likely culprit behind Meyer's dominant, if too short, run at the helm of the Gators.

Yeah, not the best of sources, but I've heard this elsewhere as well.

On ESPN they're saying that the cyst was benign and has nothing to do with it--it just gives him some bad headaches when he gets overly excited or stressed. It could be part of it, but everyone's making it sound like it's something else.

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

Rumor on the streets, this is just a rumor mind you, is that Urban had two heart attacks during this season.

Also Meyer apparently did not want to step down, but his wife threw the proverbial hammer down in this instance.

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

Hope he gets healthy...

And just like that, UF floats back into obscurity. Can't say I'm not happy.

...and back comes the dominance of the U!

On the real though, as much as I hate the Gators, Urban's a great coach and even better person so hopefully everything is okay.

Re: Urban Meyer resigns as UF football coach

i have 2 guesses.

either a alcoholic

or massive heart problems

edit: im going to add a third... depression. After delonte's problems and with the "its not life threatening" and random trips to the hospital being covered up, I wonder if he is depressed and has overdosed on things
