It's become clearly obvious to me that we need another big this season. Let's discuss who might be available...It seems to me that we have 3 options since we're in rebuilding mode. We trade for an older big that can be serviceable this year and on his last year or two of a contract (in the Dalembert mode). We sign a bench big from who's left to sign (ugh). We trade for a young big, which means we'd have to give something up, and maybe more than just Danny Green (ex: Thabeet).

Any other thoughts or names?

isnt Dampier still out there as a FA, or did he get signed.

The best free agent center is probably Yiannis Bouroussis from Greece. It doesn't appear the Cavaliers like him or would be willing to pay the money necessary to get him out of Europe.

If we bring in another big it will most likely be through trade with one of our bigs heading out. We have 6 already i believe not counting Woods who will be cut. Only one true center in Hollins but AV and JJ will also play center. With the pace we are gonna be playing at, the bigs we have fit in perfectly.

Agree. I know the Cavs were linked to him in the past but they haven't been mentioned in connection with him in the last year. Could take the full MLE to get him and that might be more than the Cavs think he's worth.

There are no real quality C's available. Cavs could sign someone like an Earl Barron just for added depth but they're likely going to have to suck it up for now and go C by committee.

I wouldn't mind seeing us have Varejao defend the 4 and JJ defend the 5, and then they can switch on offense. JJ didn't do a bad job guarding centers when Shaq was out, and Andy shuts down 4s, where he can struggle against centers.

Is any FA big really an upgrade over what we have now?

You're not going to find a big who fits better into what we're going to be doing than Varejao. I don't see the point in trying to add a big using an asset.

Grab a warm body who's over 6'10 and can play an up-tempo game and we should be okay. Hollins might be able to fill a void himself, he's a stiff, but he can run jump and dunk.

Try to sign Marc Gasol in free agency next year...

I'll stop dreaming now.

What about Chris Mihms?

I am pretty sure Sasha Kahn is our Center of the future with Andy as energy backup. We are going to have to deal with what we have for now. I think Powe could be traded this year since we have Samardo now, who has some upside and a similar game. I don't think Leon fits in the running game anyway. Maybe we can get him some minutes early on and get him to a more halfcourt oriented team for a 2nd round pick or a raw project.

anyone think that we should take a look into M.Gortat? espn insider is reporting that he's still unhappy in orlando.

from ESPN rumors

Gortat unhappy with his role

Marcin Gortat has not been happy since the Magic matched his offer sheet from Dallas in July of 2009. Gortat and his agent have talked to the press many times about his unhappiness due to the lack of playing time and now he's not happy with his role when he gets on the floor.

"There are days when I'm about to explode and just say a couple of things or go to the coach and tell him what I want to do," Gortat told the Orlando Sentinel. "I feel like I'm one of the guys who has to sacrifice a lot to adjust to this team. I can tell you that it's not easy."

His teammates and head coach really don't seem to care that Gortat is unhappy.

"A lot of players feel that they can do more than what everybody's asking them to do," Dwight Howard said. "But you've gotta know your role. Teams that win championships, everybody knows their role."

"I think that he's a guy who has a lot of trouble accepting his role," Stan Van Gundy said. "He really wants to be more of an offensive player. I'm not discouraging that, but he needs to focus on defending and rebounding and running the floor. He needs to get back to that. Those are the things he does well, and he has not done a good job of that."

Gortat has four years and about $28 million remaining on his contract."

4 years, 28M for a guy who doesn't want to focus on defending, rebounding and running the floor? No thanks.

I think we're fine with Andy V at the 5. The only centers that really give him fits are guys like Dwight Howard (who gives everyone fits) and Kendrick Perkins (who also gives lots of players fits.) We need to develop the talent we have...not try and find another round peg to fit into our square hole.

still think we should do a melo favors varejo 3way

but there may be a chance that he'll play with some fire if he's moved. especially since he feels underappreciated where he is. i think he could be a serviceable big. i'd be ok with gortat and hollins at the 5. hickson and vareajo at the 4. and powe as a 4/5 backup. we could then move jamison, who i'm convinced won't fit with running game.
