What Will the Next Cleveland Contender Look Like?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
There's no reason to give up on most names aside from "Tribe", which they've already said won't happen. We don't really know much at this point. But Buzzards isn't happening - that'd be a legal mess with WMMS.
It's also a shitty bird that eats dead carcasses. The jokes about us picking over the dead carcasses of over-the-hill players like Hanley Ramirez and Ben Gamel do write themselves though...

Also, people need to stop clinging to WMMS as a symbol of Cleveland. It's pretty much irrelevant and has been for a while. Cool history, but I'll appreciate a deeper cut like Moondog over "Buzzard" every day.

The Cleveland Moondogs would be awesome. But Mary Sue Strongsville might not be a fan..

Guardians has an authoritative connotation and is the presumptive name of members of the newest military branch.. The "Space Force"... It would be essentially calling the team the "soldiers" or "marines" given enough time despite the local historical reference, which gets lost the further away you move from the actual city.

Eagles, Bears and Hawks and blah blah blah eat TONS or carrion... I suggest you consider some empathy in your perspective.
Oh god I completely forgot that Space Force was even a thing...

I think the other animals you mention aren't primarily associated with carrion. That's a big difference. You say the word "buzzard" to someone in this country and the first thing that comes to mind is buzzards circling over a dead thing.

The irony is that sounds sooo Cleveland.... LOL - just joking here.

I have no idea what connection to Cleveland the name Guardians has.

There is no dash to the name, like Cavaliers or Warriors or even Indians. Its much like Soldiers. As a kid, nobody played Soldiers and Indians.

Commodores sounds like a disco group...oh, wait.

The two names that do have connections to Cleveland are Spiders and Rockers. They both have some logo and branding possibilities that Guardians does not.

There are literally two massive structures called Guardians of Traffic, that GV Artwork and other major Cleveland brands frequently use in designs that are wildly popular.

I am okay with the Commodores, Guardians and Spiders all three have some significance in my mind...

But the thing is our next contender on the field may not be a whole lot different than our 40 man plus top prospects now... We aren't gonna go through a long low, we are going to stay above .500 for a long time to come and when you do that you will find a time in contention in the playoffs. 16 wasn't our best team of that decade yet we got the farthest. As long as we get to the playoffs we have a chance especially with a pitching factory like we have...

The Spiders were a National League team in the late 1800's that was not a part of or connected to the franchise we currently cheer for. "Spiders" is in no way unique to Cleveland.

The “Guardians” have been an iconic Cleveland landmark since 1932, flanking the Hope Memorial Bridge — the gateway to downtown Cleveland directly by Progressive Field. Guardians fits perfectly with our local catchphrases like "Defend the Land" and "Cleveland vs the World". Most of all, as I've noted, moving from "Indians" to "Guardians" is literally just changing one syllable. You keep your branding and keep your connection to the team we love now instead of starting over.

As far as the new name goes,,
Many popular names have been privately copyrighted in hopes of somebody profiting off a purchase. Dolan mentioned he's not happy about that.
But the Indians are missing the boat on not having any "last Indians season" promotion.

The Cavs had them on shorts on one of their alternate jerseys even. So I agree, clevelanders would get it, even if they have to be told of the Guardians of traffic.

Guardian definition: a defender, protector, or keeper.

It has just as many rebranding capabilities as the rest. I just wish they would tell us what the new name will be already, but that ain't happening anytime soon.

Guys and gals, Guardians is the answer for the new name of our beloved baseball club. It's a no-brainer in my opinion:

1. First and foremost, it's relevant to Cleveland, which to me is essential. I don't want to see some generic nickname that has nothing to do with the area like Comets, Coyotes or Crushers, etc. Not only is Guardians relevant to the city, but I would argue that it's one of the most commonly associated images with Cleveland.
2. Instantly, you have yourselves an incredibly badass logo to thrown on ballcaps, jerseys and other merchandise:

It's a powerful, strong logo that in some ways is the complete opposite of Wahoo. Instead of a goofy, disrespectful caricature, you have a depiction of an iconic symbol locally that projects inclusion.
3. Phonetically, it's about as close as you'll find to Indians making the transition a bit easier.
4. Speaks for itself:

I'm not big on the whole Guardians thing obviously - good name for a hockey team though..

The Cleveland Chords
The Cleveland Cats
The Cleveland Blizzards
The Cleveland Motors

I'll show myself out....

When I hear Guardians, I think guardian angels, the volunteer crime prevention organization founded by Curtis Sliwa in the late 70s in NYC. I think there was some connection with Cleveland, beyond a chapter or something. It doesn't appeal to me as a sport team name, but I can't offer any better myself. Spiders is the best so far, I guess, said without much enthusiasm.

I just don't see Guardians being innocuous enough.

Spiders is OK, and should be extremely marketable toward younger folks/kids.... Lots of potential there...

The Cleveland Webs?

Is this thing on?
