Who's Left

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Never could understand Smooths facination with Mikki Moore. To want this guy over Hakim Warrick is amazing to me.

I haven't kept up to date with any signings other than our own, but if Johan Petro was available for a cheap end of bench signing, why not?

I keep thinking that with who we have now a end of bench point would be nice, but looking at the age of our frontcourt and unsureness in JJs health and Darnell not looking like he could handle minutes at the 5. Petro could fill that spot as with Shaq and Zs age, another 7 footer to play some spot minutes throughout the year when they are resting would be a nice luxury.

With his age maybe he could be someone to grow into a 5 pt/ 5 reb a night guy for us or more. Low risk high reward type of guy, something that it seems Ferry really covets.

With the roster as is, we are looking at a guy to fill a spot far down on the bench anyways. If that's the case, its not like the difference between Hakim Warrick, Joe Smith, and Othello Hunter, etc. is going to be the ultimate difference.

I would be happy with a talented and young stretch 4, but if it doesn't happen I am happy with the roster as it stands.

We still need a 4 that can get some playing time. Othello Hunter is no better than a 15th guy. He'll be lucky if he makes any team. Same goes for Davidson.

Unrestricted only.

If we go after a 3rd PG: Anthony Johnson, Bobby Jackson, Anthony Carter, Fred JOnes (can play both G spots)
If we go after a big: Sheldon Williams, Hakim Warrick, James Singleton

I'm starting to think the argument that if you are going to add someone cheap, you might as well add a guard because it's likelier you will find one of them cheap who actually might contribute has some merit...I have been a bit of an advocate for adding a veteran PG, but looking over these names I'm not totally sold on the idea either...

Now if Boobie had any trade value, I could see trading him for a PF type making about what Boobie makes ($4m), which might be enough money to find some value. Then you could use the BAE to add a veteran PG if you wanted. But you aren't going to get anything of value for Gibson at this point, so you are probably better off keeping him and hope he stays relatively healthy this year and starts making his shot.

Of the names discussed, I sort of like James Singleton, but not sure how he would fit on the Cavs since he is another tweener and doesn't really address the PF need. But now that Dallas has Gooden, maybe they aren't as interested in him.

Diogu is also mildly interesting, but isn't he a Star Wars character? Seriously, I believe this guy is always injured. Not sure what his current status is.

Jermareo is really a reach, and besides we already have a Jamario.

In fact, no one else mentioned at PF is as good as JJ is right now, and there's little point in bringing in someone with a talent level and skill set more like DJ since the Cavs like him and have invested time and effort in him.

I'd snap up Walt Williams if he's available.

Haven't seen much of this Othello Hunter character. What's he good at?

What's going on with Kleiza these days? Why not take a runa t him with the BPE and whatever's left from the MLE? If Denver matches so be it. It only ties us up for a week, which at this point I'm not sure that means a whole lot.

There was a rumor about a week ago that he was exploring possible opportunities in Europe...I don't think there has been any further news on that, and apparently Denver's QO of $2.7m is the only offer on the table. I don't think the Cavs can cobble together enough to make him an offer, and my sense is our interest in him was only lukewarm at best.

It's been a week or so since this thread was active, and a number of names have come off this list, so I thought it'd be worth revisiting...Especially with the Powe and Joe (Smith) situations currently in limbo...I wouldn't be overly surprised to see either situation come to resolution within the next few days, but also wouldn't be surprised to see either or both situations drag on for several more weeks, or even longer...

Looking mainly at the options at the bigs, since almost everyone agrees that a big of some sort, particularly someone who can play PF, is the team's greatest need.

The following bigs are now gone:

Hak Warrick
Shelden Williams (signed with Boston for minimum)
Drew Gooden
Ike Diogu
Ryan Hollins
Theo Ratliff

He wasn't really discussed in this thread and hardly fits the description of a PF, but we can just about remove Linas Kleiza's name from the list as he seems poised to sign a two year $10m deal with Olympiakos. The Cavs could offer 2 years for $4m, but as others have pointed out, there's little point with Moon now on the roster.

Of the names people have mentioned as even outside possibilities, the following names are still on the board, to my knowledge.

Adonal Foyle (I did see rumblings of some interest somewhere, not the Magic)
Mikki Moore
Steve Novak
Rob Kurz
James Singleton
Glen Big Baby Davis
Othello Hunter (mainly mentioned by RCF posters because of his OSU ties, I think)

Of these five, Novak and Kurz (especially Kurz) have been linked to the Cavs this FA season. So has Davis (sort of).

I am sort of surprised that James Singleton's name hasn't been mentioned a bit more in this forum, given that virtually every player in the NBA has been mentioned and discussed at some point. I suppose he is unlikely because he is a restricted FA with the Mavs, and Cuban probably wouldn't want to lose him just out of principal, and because he has already lost Brandon Bass.

Rotoworld, quoting the Dallas Morning News, reported on August 3rd that the Mavs may be looking to bring him back:

The Dallas Morning News reports that James Singleton is likely to return to the Mavericks next season, though so far "nothing is official."
Singleton would be a nice addition to the Mavs' bench, giving them a physical defender and rebounder behind forwards Dirk Nowitzki, Drew Gooden, and Tim Thomas. He has bulked up this summer but will probably be lucky to match last season's 14.3 minutes per game.

The Mavs have lost Bass and Hollins (who wasn't in their rotation), and have added Gooden and Tim Thomas. I don't know, maybe they'd feel that Singleton wouldn't be worth it if the Cavs offered him the BAE. Maybe no one in this forum thinks he is worth it. He is undersized as a PF at a listed 6-8, but he is a tough rebounder and is athletic. Really, he'd be no worse than Hak Warrick defending the low post, would he? The Mavs also have plenty of other bigs with guaranteed contracts on their team -- in addition to Dirk and Dampier, they also have Nathan Jawai and Shawne Williams. I know, not exactly world beaters, but they are both young and would be their 5 and 6 bigs on the depth chart and have guaranteed contracts through 2010. And that's not even counting Shawn Marion who will likely play a lot of PF, with Dirk moving over to C in small ball. In the depth chart, Singleton would be behind Dirk, Gooden, Thomas, and Marion at PF (I realize they seem to want Gooden to play some center).

Anyway, just a thought...Powe, if healthy, is clearly more accomplished and a better player, but in my opinion that remains a big if. And as for Joe Smith...Well, at beginning of the FA season, taking into consideration likely cost and fit on the team, I thought that Joe was as good as anyone we would realistically be able to get at PF. So if we are able to get him on terms that we want, I will be glad to have him on the team.

That said, Singleton is pretty tough, he's a 28 year old veteran, doesn't duplicate JJ in what he brings to the table, has been productive with Dallas and LA Clippers (a 16.45 PER last year with the Mavs), and has a better shot than he gets credit for. He's also a bit of a fan favorite in Dallas.

Scot Pollard available? :chuckles:

Out of curiosity (apparently not shared by anyone else here in RCF:)), I tracked down the full blog posting in the Dallas Morning News from August 2 on Singleton. We could throw him at Shelden Williams or his former teammate Brandon Bass.

Nothing is official, but it's likely that James Singleton will return to the Mavs.

They need him.

Singleton won't play major minutes. With Drew Gooden and Tim Thomas crowding the frontcourt picture, Singeton might not even play as many as he did last season, when he averaged 14.3 minutes in 62 games. But Singleton would play a significant role as a energy source/enforcer when he's summoned off the bench.

While the Mavs consider Thomas an above-average post defender, he isn't a guy who will ever be accused of attacking the glass. Gooden is a solid rebounder, but he doesn't exactly have a rep as a defensive stopper or a dude who does much dirty work.

Singleton's game is based on dirty work with the occasional highlight slam. He's a relentless defender and rebounder (10.2 per 36 minutes last season), always runs the floor hard and doesn't back down from anybody. His focus this off-season has been to bulk up a bit to better prepare him to battle in the paint.

Singleton is the Mav best suited to get Dirk's back when necessary, assuming he's on the roster, which is exactly why he needs to be.
