Woj: Chris Grant fired (1-year anniversary)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
3 people are responsible for Lebron and Love being here today and the whole idea of "the return" getting hatched. CG would be number 3 on the chart of those deserving credit...it wouldn't have happened this summer without him. Sadly, he will never get credit and the real story will never be told.

This was the first thing that popped into my head when I read supermario's post. Glad someone posted it.

One year ago, the Cavs had Chris Grant, Mike Brown, a team that was well under .500 and having frequent (and public) disputes in the locker room, and their second best player was Luol Deng.

One year later, the Cavs have David Griffin, David Blatt, a team that is the current third seed and is one win away from tying the franchise record winning streak, and their second best player is Kyrie Irving.

So why don't you just tell the story so there doesn't have to be a sadly part to it

Even knowing less than you...I agree, and it doesn't surprise me.

At the same time, I don't really care much. Chris Grant is very well off financially I'd imagine and has had opportunities to have one of the coolest jobs in the world. Not really sad about any of it. :)

I'll always believe that Chris Grant got a raw deal when he got fired... Just as (similarly) I think Danny Ferry did before him. Grant's draft history (particularly Waiters and Bennett) wasn't perfect... but it also wasn't terrible. If you look at his overall "record", I'd give his drafting a "C+" and his trading an "A-".

From what I know/have read, I do believe that Grant played a big role in setting the stage for a Lebron return. He was a big part of loading the the stockpile of picks/young talent as anyone, and, in hindsight, its fairly obvious now that he helped facilitate the "smoothing of egos" necessary to start the process of Lebron's return.

You can't get a passing grade on drafting when you take someone as horrific as bennett at one.

And in Chris Grant 1-year anniversary we lost against freaking Pacers. Grant is still here.

Grant would never have gotten taken by Flip like Griffin did this summer. At the same time, Grant would have passed on Wiggins and Parker and would have reached for someone like McDermott in the last draft to show how smart he was.

Exactly. So I think I'd rather have the former.

Can I still make jokes about Grant drafting Alex Poythress given the opportunity?

I thought was Grant was a good GM but man did he stick a knife in his own back last year. Bennett and the Brown hiring killed him and he got deservedly fired for those two decisions (even if he did want to trade down Bennett was just the wrong pick and Brown he's got no excuses for). That being said he should get a second chance someplace else: his management of the cap and trading acumen was excellent. Just hire someone else to handle the draft.
