So today I got the ring of death on my Xbox for the 2nd time. However, this time I am past warranty and getting Microsoft to fix it will cost 100 dollars. If I do that, I might as well buy a new system.

So my question is: Has anyone had any luck fixing this themselves? If so, how did you do it? What guide did you use? Is it easy? Difficult?

Thanks.

I think you can YouTube it.

First time my 360 got the RROD, it was already an old system and the warranty on it was already out. I called them and told them about the situation and that I had no idea when exactly the XBOX was exactly purchased since I didn't have the receipt (actually had bought the system from a friend), and they just told me to send it in and they'd fix it for free. Only took me a week and it was worth it.

As Pootie pointed out, that's plenty of tutorials to be found on Youtube, and it's nothing too hard, as long as you're not completely inept with basic tools.

Hahah, I did that before sending it out. It'll work for maybe a day or two, but then it comes back. It might also cause permanent damage, and definitely wouldn't recommend it to someone who still has it under warranty

This same thing happened to me a couple months ago. I decided to just buy a new one, it's worth the extra 50 bucks or so just for a new warranty. If you send it back, you might end up having to pay another $100 in 2 months anyway because those things break so often.

In order to get the warranty on the new one you have to buy a new 360 Arcade. So trade in one of your old controllers and all the old power cords and you'll get like $25 off at Gamestop (all that stuff comes with the Arcade anyway). They won't take the broken Xbox, but you can sell the broken ones on ebay for $20-50. In the end you'll only end up paying around $100 plus you'll have the new warranty.

It's wrong of xbox to make you pay for it, they made a fucked up system that brakes all the time but you have to pay for a mistake they made.

Did you make sure your red ring of death warranty is expired? On the site change the thing to red ring of death and most of the time it's covered.

Yep, Microsoft pretty much gave a NEW warranty to everyone who owned a 360 that covers the RROD for something like 3 years.

My launch xbox died on Saturday. Used this as my excuse to buy a new slim.

ill fix it for $35 bucks Pm me if u are interested.

I actually only charge $20 to do it locally.

As far as doing it yourself, it's a pretty easy fix. It's all about cleaning off the cpu/gpu, replacing the thermal paste, and perhaps adding the "2 penny" heatsinks.

Contact cleaner and arctic silver thermal paste. Roughly $20 for both items together at radio shack. You'll also need a T8 and T10 torx drives.

Youtube it to find some video tutorials.
