XBOX 360 "Ring of Death"

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Only problem is that its not under warrenty. I orginally bought it used at Record Exchange and then sold it too him. I saw the towel trick on youtube. Has anybody tried this and if so does it work? Yeah, 3 red rings lit up so it is the ring of death.

If I don;t have a warranty and I get the Red Ring of Death can I still send mine in to get fixed and if so, how much does it cost to get repaired?

They ended up sending me my original 360 but it took less than a week to return it. Along with the lack of "freshness" and the time I spent waiting for my 360 to return, Gears of War 2 just didn't feel as special as the first one.

Funny Story

A couple months ago some of the guys at my school were talking about the Ring of Death and my friend didn't know what it was. everyone was telling him about it and they said he would get it that night (messing with him of course)

Well guess what when he got home he turned it on and he had the Red Ring. Kinda Creepy

Yeah it works temporarily before it bites the dust completely. I don't recommend it. I use that 360 as a paper weight now.

Also call Microsoft (don't tell them you bought it record exchange) and see if it's still under warranty. Who knows, you might get lucky. Also if that doesn't work, I know someone that fixes red ringed 360's, but it doesn't always work and he charges.

If you have a first or second generation Xbox 360 than this is the de facto standard for DIY fixes...

Go to Lowe's with these part numbers...

You need a TORX 8 and a TORX 10 screwdriver to open the case. Then head to Radio Shack and purchase some Arctic Silver 5. AS5 is a thermal compound used to transfer heat from a chip die to the heatsink. It's very high quality and a lot better than the cheap stuff MS uses. This fix really isn't that difficult if you take your time and follow the guide step by step. The most vital part of the process is the "bake" when you run the Xbox 360 without the fan plugged in. Make sure you tighten the bolts just a little. What you're doing here is heating up the unit enough to soften the solder that connects the graphics chip and processor to the board. This is where the majority of issues are. The solder weakens and splinters causing bad connections. This do-it-yourself fix is a way to get your Xbox working again. Worked for me and I'm going on 4 months. I had the E74 error (1 red light).

so my question is then my brothers 360 is way out of warrenty. so i take it microsoft won't be able to fix it for free then? does anybody on this forum no how to fix the red ring of death? please let me know. thanks,

I know there is a manual online that tells you how to fix it yourself. But it happened to me too. And I got mine off eBay but when I called Xbox they said it would be $100.

But I told them I would think about it while I mulled over the idea of fixing it myself ( I think the manual was like $25). But I decided rather that messing it I would send it to Microsoft. So I called them back and then they said they would fix it free of charge!!

So i got lucky there. I guess you could try that. But I would recommend having Microsoft fix it. If you do it yourself and mess it up its done forever.

I have been getting one red ring for 2 months now. Then every 1 outta 3 times or so I get the 3 red rings. But then I turn it off and it back on and it works. This happened last time too, but only for about a week til it died. This has been going on for a while. I am waiting for the inevitable to happen, but does anyone have any idea why it is still working?

Heh welcome to the club. I went through about 4 PS3's before I got a working one. Sony just fixes yours and sends it back.

It depends what color your warranty sticker is under the faceplate.

Also, did you switch the problem to red ring? It will drop to 0 if it's still covered, red ring is covered 3 years after your warranty expires.

There is only one real way to fix the rings of death....

Sell your X-Box and go buy a PS3!!
