Your 2019 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Going to second game of season. Hoping Carrasco of last start shows up and they get this back on track.

Jefry Rodriguez will be starting Wednesday, per @indiansPro on twitter

Why did we designate him? He’s one of our better hitters.

This team is seriously lacking in the power department with Jose's struggles and without an EE/Napoli in the heart of the lineup, even though Santana has been great. T28th in HR and last in SLG%

I wonder what the cost would be on Trey Mancini. Pretty bad in the field and carries a low OBP (off to a great 2019 though) but is a RH bat with some pop and team control.

It’s just one game, but still...

Watching Roberto Perez struggle to hit .160 this year is not going to be fun.

Realizing this lineup, even with Lindor and Kipnis back, is still average at best. That sucks.

Anyone worried Lindor might miss an extended amount of time btw?

Also, I’m concerned that teams figured out Jose down the stretch last year. He looks terrible, seems like he is out in front of everything. Can’t hit a breaking ball.

Here is the list of players we let go (am I missing anyone?)

Encarnacion
Alonso
Brantley
Chisenhall
Gomes
Allen
Miller

Hard to believe we will be better than we were last year. When we got annihilated by the Astros in three games.

Anyway, it’s baseball, just one game. Still, super depressing to watch. Especially knowing where we were just a couple years ago.

@gijimbo Not necessary calling you out specifically, but your post was the first one I found via serach. Lucky you.

Encarnacion was upgraded to Santana
Alonso sucks
Brantley's still Brantley but he didn't want to stay here.
Chisenhall got hurt before playing a game this year.
Gomes is being outplayed by Robo. Robo's being paid less, and the haul we got for Gomes is already paying off.
Cody Allen is cooked
Andrew Miller is cooked

Hard to believe people still doubt this front office and make hot takes early in the year.

Lets look at the other comments:

Still holds true

So far wrong. Plausible with the video of him hobbling around the bases.

Still plausible

No longer Cleveland Indians

Still probable. Just because former players are cooked doesn't automatically make this team better that last years team.

Yeah, it's somewhere in between.

-Brantley was a clear loss, but there is nothing they could have done there
-Dumping Alonso's $9m was a clear win
-1 year of EE for 2 of Los was a win, but you have to factor in the Yandy for Bauers part of it too
-Gomes trade looks decent so far
-Not signing Allen and Miller was the right call, could they have signed them even if they wanted to though?

So while the front office may have made smart transactions in the offseason, they didn't exactly make moves to improve the roster. Not that they had much money to play with.

It's still frustrating. The bullpen isn't good, the outfield is pretty bad as well. Hard to feel like this team has a legitimate chance to compete for the title.

It's an emotional way of looking at it, but you can just feel that the Indians are on the downswing and aren't as good as they were just a couple years ago.

We are 13-10, only 23 games into the season. Some of those guys I mentioned are struggling early in the year, but I still wouldn't mind having a couple of them. Also, I haven't followed it much, but how is Yandy Diaz doing? Even Josh Donaldson is a guy we could have considered bringing back. The offense has scored 90 runs, which is the second worst in the AL, behind Detroit.

I'll come back to re-evaluate this later, but I think the nature of my point was right. We let a lot of decent players go and became a worse team than we were in 2018. The AL is stacked (although some super talented teams have had their struggles as well), so it's frustrating when you can see our window closing. Obviously, we could shore up some issues at the deadline, but I still have the same general attitude about this team.

I notice that Cleveland fans rarely, if ever, dwell on the weaknesses that every other team has solely to consistently complain about their own.

Boston has been mostly terrible with a number of holes throughout their team.

New York is floating along, but are crushed with serious injuries and riddled with inconsistencies.

Houston's starting staff is average at the very best.

I mean, we get it. The Indians lost guys to attrition, mostly because the fan base refuses to support a winner. Donaldson went to play for his childhood team, Yandy Diaz was a nobody whom nobody wanted until all of a sudden he's got 6 bombs and people will pretend they knew it the whole time.

Now that the majority of those other players have flopped elsewhere, we've moved on to other complaints about a team that obviously isn't perfect but was designed to be re-evaluated mid-season to see what exactly they'll need down the stretch.

In your mind, does being critical about the team make you less of a fan or something?

There are certainly some positives to look at with the team as well. Jose had a nice day yesterday, maybe he's getting it back together. I love the Tribe, I love baseball, I'm going to be a fan, but I'm not going to blindly follow them and support everything move they make.

Part of the reason for all of this is because of the financial aspect, I know that. I also am here to say that it really sucks lol.

I'm just discussing the things that have happened and giving my opinion on them. My overall point, independent of other AL contenders, was that this team did not improve from 2017 and 2018. Is that wrong? Does it make me a miserable Cleveland fan who refuses to support the team?

I'm still going to games and watching or listening almost every night. I'm just calling a spade a spade.

The only move that the FO made thus far that looks like a solid L (outside of not keeping Brantley/Donaldson, which we never really had a chance to do anyways) is the Yandy trade.

Hell, I was (and still am) a huge Yandy guy, but I'm not really sure where he'd really even fit in on the squad the way it's built right now. He's really not a fielder and a straight DH, but I guess we wouldn't have Bauers to integrate, so he and Carlos could probably just share 1B/DH roles.

Everything else looks fine so far. Santana is better than Edwin at this point in their careers. Alonso is kind of a stiff. Allen and Miller are both past their peaks and making way too much money. I didn't like the Gomes deal at first, but Jefry looks solid so far, and we're gonna need him with Clev on the mend.

I do wish we would have found a way to bring in a legitimate outfielder that we could play everyday with no problems. CarGo isn't terrible, but he's nothing game-changing. We've still got assets to work with though, and if we're in solid contention like we've been the past few years at the deadline, I'm sure we'll make a move to bring in a good outfielder and a bullpen arm at the deadline to try to make another push.
