Z's agent is trying his darndest but as other posters initmated, he's really stuck.

The only team with money are bad teams who I think frankly have very little interest in Z

Contenders who would love to have Z are all cash poor right now

That leaves the Cavs: Z is really stuck in a bad year for him to try to get leverage with the Cavs

According to an Eastern Conference executive, the Atlanta Hawks have been one of the most aggressive teams pursuing Ilgauskas, who is coming off his second All-Star appearance. The Hawks have the second-most salary-cap space after the Cavaliers and need a center.

Whether Ilgauskas would actually consider the lowly Hawks, or some other bottom dwellers with salary-cap space, is all part of the game.

If he wants to go to the Hawks for 14 mil per, then he'll have to go. Sounds like leverage to me, by Herb Rudoy. I hate hearing that guy's name.

If he goes to a team like the Hawks, then he can continue his non-playoff streak for five more years...He won't make that much of a difference. Their team has similar talent as our Cavaliers team from two years ago did.

I'll be shocked if Z goes to the hawks - I guess if he's that determined to get the max money, we'll just let him go - we can better spend $14 million. But why would Z, who's already set for life financially, want to go back to a team no better than the pre-lebron cavs to end his career.

if Z does leave for the hawks, what about signing both Redd and Hughes for our new starting backcourt and using the leftover money to get a defensive center.

A sign and trade of Z is also a possibility if he insists on big bucks. Not with the Knicks, but maybe with the lakers. Odom + Butler + Mihm for Z + Drew?

Redd,Hughs and James? To mayn SG and SF... James can play the point but he don't shine there. So I don't see us getting both Redd and Hughs.

I edited this in above, but it may get missed

I was envisioning Hughes and LeBron sharing the point responsibilities and turning the team into a running team. Hughes + LeBron + a defensive center who can run the floor would generate lots of turnovers/fast breaks. Redd would kill them from outside. And we have Snow to bring in for stretches to run the offense too.

the thing about hughes is, he would create so many matchup problems for the other team if he was our PG due to his length and quickness..

much like PIP did for the bulls as he handled the rock in the OFFENSE..

but we do need outside shooting, and from what i keep reading that SARUNAS cat is an excellent outside shooter..

so maybe hughes, sarunas, and bron on our perimeter ?

i just don't see how washington doesn't match any offer for LH ?

hughes is unrestricted, right? For anyone we go after, the question isn't will the other team match, is can we convince them to leave to come here and play with LeBron.

i'm about 90% sure hughes is restricted........

Hughes is unrestricted. Washington does not control where hughes goes. He has to decide for himself. they can offer him the most money however.

Cavs, Z's agent talk; center has options

The holiday weekend was not much of a vacation for General Manager Danny Ferry. Ferry spent Sunday behind closed doors at Gund Arena talking to Zydrunas Ilgauskas' agent, Herb Rudoy.

Rudoy, who has spoken with more than the Cavs about the 7-3 center, is seeking a new five- or six-year deal for his client, more than the Cavs are looking to offer.

It is believed the Atlanta Hawks have a strong interest in the 30-year-old Ilgauskas and are about $24 million under the salary cap.

"There's a good number of teams we're talking to about a sign and trade, and there are a cou ple of teams under the cap that are talking to me," Rudoy said. "We're also talking to Danny [Ferry] about Z returning. Z's thinking about [remaining with the Cavs]. He'd like to stay."

Signing Ilgauskas is the Cavs' top priority. Once they know whether Ilgauskas is staying or going, they will know how much money they have to pursue other free agents, especially a shooting guard.

The Cavs are about $28 million under the salary cap.

Ferry has said he would like Ilgauskas to remain, but at what cost?

Ilgauskas is coming off a max contract that paid him $70.8 million over six years. Rudoy said Ilgauskas will not make his decision to remain based on another max contract offer. "[A max contract] is not a factor," Rudoy said. "He'll have his own reasons to stay or go with another team."

A major reason for Ilgauskas to stay with the Cavs is his relationship with Ferry. Ilgauskas and Ferry have been close friends since Ferry was a player with the Cavs.

"Danny and Z are good friends, and he and Danny will talk and we'll see," Rudoy said. "It doesn't hurt the Cavs that Z and Ferry are good friends. Z is so comfortable in Cleveland that it will cause him to really think about what he wants to do because he loves being in Cleveland and he loves playing with LeBron [James]."

Ilgauskas' health is a concern for any team who is interested in signing him. Ilgauskas has had five foot operations and had a stretch where he played in only 29 games over two seasons. But he has not missed a game due to a major injury since coming back during the 2001-02 season. Ilgauskas had a solid year this past season when he averaged 16.9 points and 8.6 rebounds.

"Z has played in 300 games without any difficulty with his feet," Rudoy said. "He has great value in the league because he can score inside and score outside. He's a great teammate for these guys and that's why he's coveted."

ESPNNews had reported that Z wants a 5-6 year deal.

I believe that's his agent doing, because didn't Z say he only wanted to play another 3 or four years?

Rudoy seems to be talking out of both sides of his mouth. His story changes depending on who he's talking to. Hopefully Z will take more control of his own negotiations.
Rudoy is kidding himself if he thinks a sign and trade is a highly viable option for Z. The Cavs don't have much interest in doing a sign and trade. It would have to be a perfect situation where the Cavs get back lots of talent and no bad contracts. I don't see the chances of that happening as too high.

I have read the Cavs originally offered a 3 year contract to Z but I think it will take at least 4. The key is keeping the amount of the 1st year as low as possible which may mean adding an extra year or 2 on the contract.
