Potential Playoff Roster

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
2 full pages dedicated to Josh Tomlin postseason discussion, hmmm

You never know with baseball, especially a short series like in the playoffs. I don't think he will stay that low, but I think he will have a solid post season overall at the end of the day.

You're clearly not grasping what sustainable or repeatable means.

Just because something can happen doesn't make it either of those things. I know it can happen, it happened last year. The point is to figure out if there's a good chance of it happening again, and in regards to his numbers, the answer is no.

At least I didn't start this one, just chimed in part way through! :chuckle:

There is a very bad chance of him being that low in the amount of HRs possibly giving up, but at the same time he should be able to repeat a solid playoff performance, if not better numbers wise overall (aka better sabermetric stats in other areas like BABIP). As long as he overall puts up good numbers in the playoffs, I could care less about certain sabermetric numbers since 3 or 4 outings will always have the numbers slightly skewed regardless.

Like I said, he was solid. We only had 3 starters, and the 3rd was hurt for a series. Being 2nd out of 2 healthy starters isn't a huge accomplishment.

He had 3 solid performances, and there was a good amount of luck involved in those.

I'm very pleased with how he performed, but a lot of people talk about his outings like he's some playoff god.

I wouldn't say he wasn't a god.

But the guy didn't wilt under the spotlight and battled. One tends to get some respect for that in NE Ohio.

Let's change the subject...

Assuming everyone is healthy, what is your batting order in the playoffs?

What I would do
SS Lindor
LF Brantley
3B Ramirez
DH Encarnation
RF Bruce
1B Santana
2B Kipnis
CF Chisenhall (Jackson v. LHP)
C Gomes

What I think Francona will do
2B Kipnis
SS Lindor
LF Brantley
DH Encarnation
3B Ramirez
RF Bruce
1B Santana
CF Chisenhall
C Gomes

I like your lineup but would flip Jose/Brantley.

My lineup:

LF Brantley
3B Ramirez
SS Lindor
DH Encarnacion
RF Bruce
1B Santana
2B Kipnis
CF Chisenhall
C Gomes

If Bruce doesn't drop off too much from his hot streak, I'd consider having him 3rd, and moving Lindor down to 6, 7, or 8. Also, if Kipnis looks like himself over the remainder of the season, I'd swap him and Lindor.

I wouldn't put Bruce into the 3rd spot, but keep him behind EE in the lineup. Those two guys back to back are a bit scary for any pitcher especially with their power. I want Kipnis though down in the lineup though like you have, but i believe Lindor, Brantley, Ramirez actually looks the best to me, but I have a hunch Brantley will end up back in the 3rd spot when he is healthy.

This wasn't a prediction. It's my lineup as I'd have it.

Bruce being 3rd would still have him and EE back to back by the way.

I don't think Lindor has actually been a good enough hitter to warrant being in the top 3, but I trust him more than Bruce/Kipnis at this point. Would love for Bruce/Kipnis to make a case for themselves over the next month plus.

Ideally, I think you want to maximize at bats for Ramirez, now that you have Bruce here and producing.

SS - Lindor
3B - Ramirez
LF - Brantley
DH - Encarnacion
RF - Bruce
1B - Santana
2B - Kipnis
C - Gomes/Perez
CF - Zimmer

Chisenhall, Guyer, Jackson, Gio on the bench.

Lots of options to move the OF around and maximize defense in the late innings.

Can Chisehall play center field? I find it also impossible to not have him start. But, given the other options, I guess not, if he can't play the position.

Fuck. It's not a bad problem to have though. He'd be a 3-4-5 hitter on a lot of teams.

Admittedly do not know much about defensive advanced statistics, but Chisenhall's defensive CF stats look very similar to Austin Jackson's. Both appear to be slightly below average, while Zimmer ranks a bit above average.

As long as he won't kill us there defensively. I can't think he would. He's too critical to not have his offense in the lineup.

We can always make the defensive switch later in the game, especially when the game is tight.

I rather have Chisenhall in than a rookie like Zimmer. Kipnis or Chisehall as your 8th hitter is a pretty stacked lineup.

Is it critical to have Chisenhall's bat in the lineup?

I don't really think it is.

Chisenhall > Zimmer

Chisenhall was only our top RBI guy this season before he got hurt and he didn't even play everyday. When it comes to the lineup Chisenhall is better right now than Zimmer. Zimmer may be the better defender, but there is no way Zimmer will be starting over Chisenhall when healthy since he is one of the leaders in the clubhouse and two, his bat production outweighs his lower ranked defense. Zimmer will be a great guy to have on the bench for the playoff cause of his speed and ability to steal bases. He will be designated kind of like the role Davis played for us last season.
