Your Perfect Off Season

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
1) Trade down a couple of spots if possible, but if not, just draft Porter because he's the best player and fit for us.

2) Draft Dieng at #19.

3) Draft Wolters at #31.

4) Trade or Eurostash #33.

5) Sign Pekovic.

F Porter/Gee/Miles
F Thompson/Varejao
C Pekovic/Zeller
G Waiters/Ellington
G Irving/Wolters

#4 Seed.

(Yes I realize it's incredibly unlikely we would use more than two picks.)

1. Draft Noel - he sits out the entire year and works on developing post game, jump shot, body mass, etc.
2. Trade 33 for 13 and Marion - draft Shabazz Muhammad at 13
3. Trade 31 for Thomas Robinson
4. Trade 19 for Pau Gasol
5. Re-sign Ellington, Livingston

Lineup:
Irving/Livingston
Waiters/Ellington/Muhammad
Marion/Gee/Muhammad
Thompson/Robinson/Varejao
Gasol/Varejao/Zeller/Noel

Rationale: We make a play in the Dwight Howard sweepstakes without going for the drama that is Howard.
1. Robinson takes up to much cap for Houston, but is a very capable rebounder who could be a great backup big.
2. Marion is a big hit on Dallas's cap and #13 has a mandatory cap hold. Even a draft and stash player won't help (Chad Ford posted why today I think). Marion is still a reasonably athletic 3 and a good defender. He also gets a lot of points off of hustle anymore, so his influence would be good for the young guys, especially Muhammad if his diva reputation is real.
3. Gasol is the $80 million man on LA's roster right now. D'Antoni has made it no secret that he can't use Gasol, and between his salary and his tax hit on the cap, he's clearly not worth it for them. Here they can get a young player who might be able to make a difference for them. I don't think the Lakers get a better offer in this cap environment.

With that lineup, we can immediately contend for the playoffs, and maybe even go somewhere when we get there. Having a big rotation including Gasol, Thompson, Robinson, Varejao and Zeller allows us to keep Noel out for the entire year (a la Blake Griffin) so he can fix a lot of the concerns that we have about him. He can completely rehab his knee, work on his offensive game, and increase his muscle mass. I also like that it allows us to return Varejao to more of a 6th man energy type of role rather than being the only capable center on the roster.

Gasol and Marion expire at the end of the season, so we could either re-sign them to smaller deals or let them go to clear room for #6 should he decide to come.

The only way I take on Gasol is if he comes with a 2014 unprotected first

Dream 2013 NBA Draft

This is what I think we should do to have the perfect draft day.

1. Trade both second rounders to Dallas for Shawn Marion and 13th Pick

2. Trade 13th, 19th, and 1-2 future 1st round pick(s) to New Orleans for the 6th Pick

Now we're set.

We draft Otto Porter with the 1st pick. IMO if he we draft Porter here, we have a great chance to get Nerlens Noel at 6.
If the Wizards don't Noel at 3, he's ours, because Charlotte and Phoenix will be getting a guard for sure.

1. Cavs - Otto Porter
2. Magic - Ben Mclemore
3. Wizards - Anthony Bennett (I see the Wizards getting Bennett here because they are desperately in need for a SF, and Bennett has one of the biggest ceilings in the draft)
4. Bobcats - Victor Oladipo/Trey Burke
5. Suns - Trey Burke/Victor Oladipo
6. Cavs (From Pelicans) - Nerlens Noel

IMO this is very realistic and would be the perfect draft day for us, as we would be instant winners of the draft. Then our future lineup looks like this.

PG Kyrie Irving
SG Dion Waiters
SF Otto Porter
PF Tristan Thompson
C Nerlens Noel

That's a very dangerous lineup and would make us contenders within a few years.

That is actually a nightmare to waste all those future assets.

Here is something a bit more realistic

1. Noel

Trade 31 and 33 For A pick in the teens use 19 to get a combo of 2 of these 3 players

(Pope, Saric or Karasev)

If you get both Euros you can bring in one and let one develop in Europe and spike up their trade value.

Pope seems to have a bit of Klay Thompson in him and can play a little SF.

I would settle for Noel and one of the three, but 2 of the 3 would be a great draft hands down!

Why is that? Gasol is a really talented big who could do a lot to teach TT, Noel, and even Zeller for that matter. He got a bad rap this year because D'Antoni couldn't find any way to use him next to Howard, but given that we don't have a good true center on the roster, he seems like he would be a really good fit. And it's not like we don't have the cap room. He's never been known as a locker room cancer. He just goes and produces. That being said, it probably would be possible to get a protected future first out of them for taking on Gasol.

The next first-round pick the Lakers could offer anyone would be in 2019.

My new "Perfect" (yet not too far-fetched) offseason:
--3-way trade between Charlotte, Minnesota and the Cavaliers
Charlotte gets: #1 pick (Nerlens Noel or Ben McLemore)
Charlotte gives: #4, future 1st rounder

Minnesota gets: #4 pick (Victor Oladipo)
Minnesota gives: #9, #26, Derrick Williams

Cleveland gets: #9, #26, Derrick Williams, future Charlotte 1st rounder
Cleveland gives: #1 pick

--Agree to send Sacramento pick to Dallas for rights to #13 pick and Shawn Marion

--Draft:
#9-Steven Adams
#13-Sergey Karasev
#19-Tony Mitchell
#26-Giannis Adetokoumpo (leave overseas for another year, or two)
#31-Ricky Ledo
#33-Nate Wolters
Yes, that's 6 draft picks--with 5 going to Summer League/Training camp.

--Resign Shaun Livingston
--Trade Derrick Williams, Marresse Speights, CJ Miles and Tyler Zeller to Atlanta for Al Horford

pg-Kyrie Irving, Shaun Livingston, Nate Wolters
sg-Dion Waiters, Wayne Ellington, Sergey Karasev, Ricky Ledo
sf-Shawn Marion, Alonzo Gee, (Giannis Adetokoumpo)
pf-Tristan Thompson, Tony Mitchell, Kevin Jones
c-Al Horford, Anderson Varejao, Steven Adams

Trade #31, Kevin Jones, CJ Miles to Dallas for Shawn Marion and #13 -- Doesn't hurt the cap long term, helps the playoff push this year.
Trade #33, 2014 2nd Round Pick to Houston for Thomas Robinson -- Is he actually available this cheap?
Sign Sebastian Telfair -- If we aren't going to resign Livingston, we are definitely going cheap.

1 - Nerlens Noel, C, Kentucky -- Center of the future - and future defensive player of the year. Will sit for the majority of this year.
13 - Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG, Georgia -- 3PT and D - fits very well as a change of pace opposite Dion Waiters.
19 - Sergey Karasev, SF, Russia -- Lethal Shooter who should be a long term rotation player. Stash in Russia for another year.

PG - Irving (35), Telfair (13)
SG - Waiters (30), Caldwell-Pope(18)
SF - Marion (25), Gee (15), Caldwell-Pope (8)**
PF - Thompson (22), Robinson (26)
C - Varejao (30), Zeller (10), Thompson (8)**

** = Small-Ball Lineup

I will be looking for a trade partner for Varejao, especially when the trade deadline comes up -- especially if Noel is ready to start putting in minutes. Otherwise he is a strong veteran presence for a very young team.

I think this is reasonable and it would be my perfect offseason as well.

EXCEPT I would bring Karasev over now, he is ready to contribute, and would sign Livingston over Telfair, he won't cost as much as most think

I've also been wondering why people think Livingston will get expensive. If not for a decent half-season off the bench for us, he would be looking for the vet minimum. And that decent half season was 7.2 points and 3.6 assists in 23 minutes off the bench for one of the worst teams in the league. Are teams really going to offer more than 2-3M for that?

Agree Nathan. I don't understand how he priced himself over much more than the minimum. 7 & 4 is significantly less than Gee produced before his contract.
