Your Perfect Off Season

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
OK, my 2nd go around--like I said I am torn on Noel-I would love the idea of having a shot blocking rim protector. So in this scenario I will have us taking him:

Trade #31,33 to the Mavs for Marion and #13. (I think the trade would be after they chose a player for us due to Stepian rule)

#1-Noel
#13-Adams -still take him for upside, trade chip
#19-Karasev/Saric/Snell/Bullock (A wing Shooter basically)

Sign Tony Allen. If we don't get Allen, bring back Ellington and/or Livingston.

Irving (36)-Waiters (12)
Waiters (24)-Allen(24)
Marion (28)-Allen(8)-Karasev(12)
TT (32)-Zellers (16)
AV (32)-Noel-(16)-Adams

IF Kyrie is a superstar--that team to me can make some noise in the playoffs. The potential for a lock down D is there. With plenty of offense to get it done. We would have a nice mix of vets and youth. With a defensive minded coach, we would make a huge turn around. Still maintain max cap space for 2014 also.

I would NOT trade assets for Gasol. And why does anyone want to draft Shabaz--without the HS hype he is a mid 2nd rounder. Low efficiency chucker in college--not a good fit at all.

About Gasol...I wouldn't give up too much for him neither but I feel like the Lakers situation is right there to take advantage of.
Gasol and Marion are exactly the type of guys we need to change the culture and get over the hump. Guys Kyrie will respect! If all it takes to get Gasol is cap space, 2 mid-first rounders (Zeller and this year #19) and a few fillers (Miles, Gee), I say it's a bargain. It's better than the high pick OKC gave up for Perkins.

It's nice to talk about winning and all, but at some point you have to take actions. Gasol will resign on the cheap if he has the oportunity to contend. Look at what 37 years old Duncan is doing in SA for like 9M a year. If it doesn't work out next year, let him walk and spend the money on free agents. No matter what he'll help the team grow and we need this kind of moves to show we're serious about winning IMO.

Sure, he's not the answer long term but he could very well be the perfect complementary big with Noel and TT for 3-4 more years. Mike Brown just mentionned on the radio Cavs need vets and young players to get through this "journey".

Also, depending on how things turn out in Miami with Wade and his knees, Lebron should definitely consider coming here to play with a starting lineup of Irving/Waiters/James/Noel/Gasol.

Let Casspi walk and buy him a one-way plane ticket to Israel

Acquire Shawn Marion and pick 13 for pick 19

Draft:
1. Noel
13. Michael Carter-Williams - 6'6 PG with a 40" vert? Matchup nightmare
31. Giannis - let him play overseas
33. Bullock / Muscala / CJ Leslie (in order of preference...all will probably be gone but we're talking perfect offseason)

Kyrie/MCW
Waiters/Ellington/Bullock
Marion/Gee/Bullock
Tristan/Noel/Zeller
Andy/Zeller/Noel

#31, #33 and Kings pick for Marion and #13
#19 and #13 for #6
Sign Oden- One year deal
#1- Nerlens Nole
#6 Victor Oladipo

Irving, Waiters
Waiters, Oladipo
Marion, Gee
Thompson, AV
AV, Nole, Oden/Zeller

This would be great, except I don't see Oladipo falling to #6.

Here's my shot at it:

Trades:
#31 for #13 + Marion (I really only think it takes one second rounder here - Mavs aren't going to want to carry two second rounders anyway)
#19 for #8 + Charlie Villanueva (Another expiring who will cost Gilbert money, but won't hurt our 2014 cap room, need to give up a first since #8 has value to detroit)

#1 - Nerlens Noel, C, Kentucky - If your goal is to eventually win it all, you have to take risks and pick the highest upside players, that's Noel
#8 - Anthony Bennett, SF, UNLV - I'm not sure about this pick. He's another high upside player (see above), Can he fit at the 3?
#13 - Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG, Georgia - Again, not sure if he falls this far - but we need a guy who can shoot the lights out. I think he amounts to a 6th man, and his skills trade-off well with what we have in Waiters.
#33 - Giannis Antetokounmpo, SF, Greece - There won't be 4 rookies on this team, so take a draft and stash candidate and keep him in Europe.

Sign:

Greg Oden - 2yr deal + Team Option for a 3rd year - Will get plenty of playing time while Noel is out (to see if he has it). I expect to trade Varejao at some point in the season (but not now, because his value is low). Again, possible big reward here. Note that if Oden stays healthy (and lives up to his potential) the 2yr + 3rd year TO lets us Bird Option him (after signing some superstars in 2014).

Shaun Livington - Resign to a 1 year deal (with team option for a 2nd)

Let go:
Walton/Gibson/Casspi/Ellington/Jones/Quinn

Depth Chart:
PG - Irving/Livingston
SG - Waiters/Caldwell-Pope/Miles
SF - Marion/Bennett/Gee
PF - Thompson/Villanueva/Speights(if he takes player option, otherwise Jones)
C - Varejao/Oden/Noel/Zeller

Wow, that's a lot of new players (and a good amount of depth). Bennett and Caldwell-Pope are the key contributors here off the bench. I don't see Villaneuva playing much (just a pure cap dump so we can grab a pick). I think this is a team that competes for a playoff spot in 2013 (Marion is still a hugely productive offensive player).

Additionally, this gives us a ton of cap room in 2014. Marion/Villanueva/Speights are off the books. I remain convinced you trade Varejao once Noel is healthy. So the only guarantees on the 2014 Roster are:

PG - Irving
SG - Waiters/Caldwell-Pope
SF - Bennett/Gee
PF - Thompson
C - Noel/Oden/Zeller

That's a very very nice core - with a ton of money to spend. Bring in some top free agents, and this team could go far in 2014/15. It's still weak at SF, but I think that's where a top FA can come in (LBJ? Anthony?) You can go small by moving Bennett to PF, and run the floor with Zeller at C. You can have a huge rebounding team with Bennett/Thompson/Noel on D, etc.

Trades:
#31 for #13 + Marion (Cavs/Mavs)
#33 and Kings Pick for Pau Gasol (We shouldn't even need to give up Kings pick since it helps save Lakers a TON of money) (Cavs/Lakers)
Varejao for #10 (Cavs/Blazers)

#1 - Nerlens Noel, C, Kentucky
#10 - Michael Carter Williams, PG, Syracuse
#13 - Kelly Olynyk, PF, Gonzaga
#19 - Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG, Georgia

Sign:

No One.

Let go:

Walton/Gibson/Casspi/Ellington/Jones/Quinn

2013 Depth Chart:
PG - Irving/Williams
SG - Waiters/Pope/Miles
SF - Marion/Gee
PF - Thompson/Olynyk
C - Gasol/Noel/Zeller

That team should make the playoffs and gain valuable experience for this young team. Then come 2014 offseason...Miles, Marion, Gee, Gasol come off the books and we have $30-32m in cap space (Close to enough for 2 max guys if they take discount, like they did in Miami)

PG - Irving/Williams
SG - Waiters/Pope
SF -
PF - Thompson/Olynyk
C - Noel/Zeller

Olynyk might end up starter at PF to open floor up a little more for Irving/Waiters. Thompson would be a beast off the bench, IMO.

Nice core and can add 2 top FA's and have a very nice 10 man rotation (11 man if you make solid 1st round pick in 14' draft).

Start of the draft:
#1. Cavaliers - Noel
#2. Orlando - McLemore
#3. Wizards - Porter
At this point Cleveland trades the rights to Noel to Washington for Porter and their 2015 pick top 10 protected.
#4. Charlotte - Bennett
#5. Phoenix - Oladipo
#6. Pelicans - Burke
Three team trade:
Sacramento gets #13 and #19, Dallas gets #31 and #33, Cleveland gets Shawn Marion, Vince Carter, and #7.
#7. Cavaliers - Alex Len

Sign Mo Williams, Greg Oden
Resign Wayne Ellington

PG-Kyrie Irving/Mo Williams
SG-Dion Waiters/Vince Carter/Wayne Ellington
SF-Shawn Marion/Otto Porter/Alonzo Gee
PF-Tristan Thompson/Anderson Varejao/Tyler Zeller
C-Alex Len/Greg Oden

This is a 2014 plan. Its also not perfect, but I think it works on a few levels. It assumes that the focus of 2013 will be continued development of the young guys, the addition of a few vets on one year deals to help ensure the playoffs are experienced, and that space opens again in 2014 for a major long term talent to be acquired via trade or FA

Draft Noel at #1
Draft Kentavious Caldwell-Pope at #19
Trade 31, 33, and 3 Million for Danny Granger and #23. Take Giannis at 23.
Sign Oden
Resign Livingston
Let Miles and Speights walk
Trade Ellington for a future 2nd from a bad team

Giannis is a bit of a wildcard but he could drop as far as 23 due to his rawness and if there are any buyout issues. Trading above teams that are notorious for picking young, high upside euros like SAS at 28 and OKC at 29 is key to get Giannis.

Kyrie Livingston
Dion Pope-Caldwell
Granger Gee Giannis(mostly with Canton Charge)
Tristan Noel Kevin Jones(mostly with Canton Charge)
Andy Oden Zeller

Front court minutes rotation:
Andy is at strictly 24 mpg
Oden strictly 18 mpg
TT gets 36 mpg
Zeller 18 mpg

Thats 96 to start the season. When Noel is healthy and ready to go in January, he gets worked in very slowly for the first month or two and gets his minutes out of Zellers and Odens. If by the trade deadline, everyone is miraculously healthy and playing well, you possibly move one of Oden, Zeller, or Andy depending on how everyone is complementing each other, their contract status, and most importantly, who can get the best offer. More than likely though you just keep all five and a healthy Noel finds a way to get 20-24 minutes per game and slowly learn the NBA game and Mike Browns defensive principles.

At the end of the year, Granger is gone and you add a premium talent at SF via FA or trade.

This is my "People are going to scream at me" + "defensive takeover offseason plan" + "unrealistic the Chosen One/Jerk returns" plan. In otherwords, a pointless exercise in late night mental masturbation. But that is what the Trades, Free Agency, and Draft forum is for, no? So humor me.

Take Noel at #1
Trade Dion and Zeller to Phoenix for #5, Gortat, and Dudley. Draft Oladipo at #5
Trade 19, 31 and 3 million to Utah for #14 and draft Dennis Schroeder
Trade 33 and 3 million to the Clippers for #25 and draft Reggie Bullock

Kyrie Schroeder
Oladipo Ellington
Dudley Bullock Gee
Tristan Andy K Jones
Noel Gortat

In 2014 Sign LeBron, let Ellington walk, let Gee walk let Gortat walk, draft a back up Center with our 2014 first

Kyrie Schroeder
Oladipo Dudley
LeBron Bullock
Tristan Andy K Jones
Noel 2014 drafted big.

I don't think teams could score 85 points on that defense.

Draft Noel. Trade up for Cody Zeller using some combination of the 19th/SAC pick/MEM pick/MIA pick, and then turn the 31st and 33rd into a 20s pick. Take Reggie Bullock.

Kyrie Irving
Dion Waiters
Reggie Bullock
Cody Zeller
Nerlens Noel

Maybe you forgot Tristan Thompson was on our team?

But nonetheless.. No. Please god, no.

Maybe you forgot Tristan Thompson was on our team?

But nonetheless.. No. Please god, no.

He can't come off the bench? Speights isn't exactly a cornerstone back there. The luxury of bringing Tristan off the bench would be huge for our depth.
Bullock/Zeller/Noel is a perfect fit and highly talented.

1. Draft Noel - he can come back at his pace, bulk up and play 20-30 games at the end of the year to build momentum for year #2
2. Get Pau from the lakers in a salary dump type of trade (ie our 2nd rounders) - he'll play major minutes as we make our playoff push and pad our win totals to make us more attractive to the 2014 free agents.
3. Andy stays healthy and helps Dion, Kyrie and Thomposn learn a thing or two about defense & mike browns system
4. I like the Mo williams idea to be 6th man and backup PG

2013/2014
C: Gasol, Andy, Noel
PF Thompson, Andy
SF: Gee (barf)
SG: Waiters, Williams
PG: Irving, WIlliams

This sets us up in 2014 to have

C: Noel, Andy Zeller
PF: Thompson, Andy
SF: Gee, Free Agent
SG: Waiters, Williams
PG: Irving, WIlliams

Three way trade with Sac and Dallas.

CLE trades #19, and both seconds
CLE receives Marion, Salmons, and #7

Dallas trades Marion, #13
Dallas recieves both seconds

Sac trades Salmons, and#7
Sac recieves #13 #19

Cavs draft Porter who slips to 7.

Roll in to 2014 and make a run at LeBron and George. Worst thing that happens with George is Indy matches us and we still have Dion to play next to LeBron and Kyrie.

Trade #1, #31, #33 and Kings pick back to Sacramento for Demarcus Cousins.

Trade #19 and CJ Miles for Granger.

PG - Kyrie Irving
SG - Dion Waiters
SF - Danny Granger
PF - Tristan Thompson
C - Demarcus Cousins

Easily a playoff team, and Granger comes off the books at the end of the season and we can still make a push for LeBron.
